Title: Master Classics of Poker Main Event
Post by: The Camel on October 13, 2014, 06:57:42 PM
All the talk of Amsterdam in the GUKPT v UKIPT thread made me nostalgic about my favourite tournament and instead of playing the GUKPT main event I think I will give MCOP a bash for the first time in 3 years (it is on the same week)

It's €4000 + 250 this year and I'm looking to sell 30% at no mark up if you can give me cash in Euros or at 1.1 if you pay by bank transfer, cash in sterling or money on Pokerstars. (I'm in London for another couple of days if you are here for the EPT and want to give me cash in Euros)

As I'm offering this with no mark up, I think it's only fair that anyone who has paid a mark up for my action in the past gets the first chance to buy, so it's only open to them for a week (lets say until 20th October)

I have my best record of any venue at this event.

I think I've played the main event 9 times and I've final tabled 3 times and cashed another 3 times.

Always happy and extremely focused out there and the field is usually very soft. Will be even softer with most good UK players at the Vic.

Not playing so much nowadays, but cashed in 3 of the last 4 tournaments I played.

12th @ 25/25 at the Vic, 5th @ GPS Newcastle and 23rd @ UKIPT London.

My complete record is here: http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=112

Feel free to Sharkscope me: The Camel (pokerstars)

The tournament isn't til the end of November so no immediate hurry for the money, but must be received before the week before I leave (will get a flight around the 22th November)

Will lock in at this rate if you choose to pay in sterling:

10% = £370
5% = £185
1% = £37

etc etc

Flames, put downs, piss takes all extremely welcome.

Thanks for reading and GL me!

Why not pay a return visit?

There's a PLO tournament on the sked.

As for a trip to Amsterdam - not at the moment not enough spare time - hope you get a result.

Damn, forgot to put in the OP that the mark up is 1.5 for Euro Sceptics and UKIP supporters because if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be having to go through the rigmarole of changing money into Euros to go and play a tournament at the home of one of our European comrades.

But as it's my oversight, booked I guess :)

Yes, it's been a while since I last played MCOP. It used to be THE annual highlight, aside from the WSOP, but then the EPT arrived, & sort of changed the landscape. We used to stay, as did many of the Brits, just across the road, at the Owl Hotel. (The passenger lift @ The Owl was the smallest lift I've ever been in).

I can exactly date my last MCOP trip - November 2003 - as I had, almost accidentally, taken 19.5% of the action of a guy named Ian Oldershaw. Ian, Thewy & I travelled & roomed together in those days. Ian ended up 2nd for €121,000.

Looking at that payout list has prompted so many memories, I may have to start a thread......

http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/event.php?a=r&n=1597

This year's Omaha? I was serioiusly tempted when you mentioned it, but having looked t it, I don't much fancy the structure. 2,000 starting chips @ 25-50, & unlimited rebuys + an add-on suggests this will be carnage, a rebuy-fest, & I'd need €1,000 minimum to even consider playing it. I don't think unlimited rebuys in Omaha is a good thing, personally.

https://poker.hollandcasino.nl/en/masterclassicsofpoker

Anyway......I'll send you the cash a little nearer the time. MCOP Main Event cash # 7 (& win # 1) beckons, I hope.

Haha, you should have kept this and posted it the night before Day 1 for motivational purposes.

JJ Hazan should have got a 2 round penalty for wearing an offensive shirt and has anyone seen the Swiss geezer who won it since?

Just squirreled away the loot like a meanie.

I remember one occasion, about 10 years ago, I was having dinner with Mr Thew the night before the main event started.

He happened to mention that he was surprised to learn the tournament had sold out so quickly.

I hadn't bought my seat yet!

I hastily put down my bread roll half eaten and raced to the casino to confirm the news.
Luckily a friend who had already bought his seat won another in the last chance satellite and sold me the ticket and I got in the event.

Just bought in today.

Only 130 registered and no half eaten bread rolls for me.

Sad really, this was the best tournament in Europe back then and now cannot attract more than 150 entries.

Still, with late entries and re entries should get 200 I hope.

Still pretty disappointing.

It used to be *the* event in Europe. Added money and tons of prestige.

Now with a big event virtually every fortnight and no unique selling points for MCOP it is just another big tournament.

There were lots of Dutch players though, and I think it is better value than the average EPT.

Finished Day 1 on 48,700.

A little bit disappointing, as I hit more than my fair share of flops in the day.

It was the first time I've played a main event which is a re entry and I must admit I was very surprised to see people gamble decent stacks in the last level or so, with the knowledge they will fork out another 4 grand if they lose.

Fair enough if they've got 10-15 bbs.

But I was seeing some play I'd expect in a tenner rebuy at Luton with 30-40bb stacks. People must have more money than sense.

I should have shut up shop for the last hour when I got to 60k+

The "majors" scene was MCOP, E-WSOP & WSOP then.

Times have changed, eh?

One quirk of the MCOP (back then) was that they divided the cardroom into "Smoking" & "Non-Smoking" areas, & you were allowed to choose which you preferred.

I always remember Bushy, who was a non-smoker, saying "I've chosen the SMOKING section, as I think the field there is bound to be softer".

The mysteries of poker, & how we think, eh?

Good luck today Keith.

It wasn't the World Series of Poker Europe, it was the WSOP trial in Vienna.

It was played over the exact same format as the real WSOP and was a really big deal.

I remember playing it for the first time and being nearly as excited as playing the WSOP.

Correct, E-WSOP @ Concorde, it was a HUGE deal.

Think Trumper won it one year? Chubby Nowab won it, or nearly so, a year or two later, too.

Off to google, I feel a ramble coming on.

BOOM, found it.

Trumper won it in 2001.

Christer Johansson was a fearsome player.

Check out his HM

http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=459

Must have the biggest % of wins to cashes ratio of virtually anyone on the database.

If he got hold a big stack it was game over for the rest of us.

Did he retire from poker in 2010?

Not exactly like for like in terms if tournament size, but this unlikely sort gives him a run for his money on wins:cashes ratio!!

Should bring a smile! Good luck Keith.

That was a huge tourney the 7-stud one.

I think Shirley Lewis chopped it one year for six figures, what happened to her?

And lost the final 10bbs with a legitimate chance to quadruple up.

Shoved MP with A9s.

Next player calls.

Sb shoves.

BB shoves!

Flat caller passes, I am up against KK and JJ for a 200k pot.

No ace and I'm out 6 short of the money.

Pretty devastated, thanks for the stake/support, really hoped I was going to go deep here.

That KK hand was cruel.

Are Milky Way and Paradiso still going if one's at a loose end?

Unlucky Keith.

Hope you never found that canal. I had nightmares all night about your threatened bellyflop.

Anyway, that aside, would you play the MCOP again in the future, knowing what you now know?

That's a difficult one.

On one hand I handsdown play my best poker here. I love the city and feel confident and happy here.

Also must have something to do with the standard of opposition I guess. I feel like the majority of locals just aren't very good at poker.

But on the other hand..

I absolutely loath re entries. Especially for a main event.

It gives the top players a huge edge and definitely discourages amateurs having a shot at a big event.

Re entries for side events? Meh, fine I guess.

For main events? No thanks.
