Milton Jones is a tough one for me - he is a bit like a band that has an amazing first album and then never quite makes it to the same standard.  His original set is brilliant, but Im not sure he has written a good joke since.

Merton needs to get back on stage - he is an awesome stand up.

Steven Wright and George Carlin will always be amoung my favourites.

Haven't seen a stand up gig in decades so all my picks are TV shows/DVDs.

Louis C K, his show on Fox Channel is excellent.

Stewart Lee

Loved Adam & Joe too

Chris Morris anyone?

Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge?

Three good choices there Tighty. Milton is very marmite, I personally love him.

I've seen some comedians more than once and non live up to their first performance. Rhod Gilbert, Sarah Millcan are examples.

Seen Jimmy Carr/Kevin Bridges/Mikey Flanagan/Frankie Boyle/Peter Kay. Liked them all.

Favourite performances have come from Stephen K Amos, Jason Byrne, Tom Stade and the first Rhod Gilbert one.

Going to see Andrew Lawrence in January, really looking forward to it.

Love Russell Howard's good news on TV.

Hard to beat Richard Pryor in his hay day.

Richard Pryor was probably the only Black Comedian I ever got.  My missus watches loads of comedy from American and pisses herself at it and I just don't get it.  Makes me feel old.

Also don't really like shouty folk for that reason Gilbert pisses me off, if he's a bit quieter I might find him funny.

The teacher from The Inbetweners done a good stand-up, his name escapes me right now.

Of the American comedians it's always the black guys that make me laugh the most, usually taking the piss out of us whities!

Russell Peters. Very underrated comedian over here but huge in Canada/US etc.

Jimmy Carr is very good live.

Echoing the above for Connolly/Rock/Chappelle.

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy were also very good but their shows wouldnt pass the PC censors nowadays!

Jimmy Carr, in my opinion, works hardest at his craft, and just nails a joke more often than almost anyone else.
Saw him in the few days after his tax issues went public, and he handled that situation much better than I thought possible.

Milton Jones and Stewart Francis always seem to make laugh.

Lots of good stand up out there without paying over the odds to watch someone whose made multiple appearances on Mock the 8 out of 10 News for You and is now attempting to fill an arena somewhere.
Comedy is best in small venues and there are lots of people out on tour heading for all corners of the country.
Look out for James Acaster, light whimsical stiff but very well crafted.
Tom Wrigglesworth, with stories of his granddad and  a very poignant ending
Festival of the Spoken Nerd is mostly for science and maths geeks but is a good night out.
Stewart Lee, anywhere.
Jason Cook, solidly funny observational stuff.
Noel Fielding is on tour if you have a taste for the surreal.
Simon Evans was excellent at EdFringe a couple of years ago
And finally, check the tour dates for Miles Jupp. His last tour 'Fibber in the Heat' was his story of going to India as the cricket correspondent of the Western Mail. Utterly brilliant stuff.

Otherwise, just take a risk on the line up at your local arts centre.
I saw Andrew Lawrence, Tom Stade, Rehinald D Hunter, Sarah Millican , Ed Byrne, Al Murray, Tim Minchin and a bundle of others about 10 years ago in local small venues.
Frankly they were all funnier and more connected with the audience then.

PS. People who bought Milton Jones may also enjoy Stewart Francis.

James Acaster is very funny.  I find Andrew Lawrence very funny but his sister is one of my best friends and know the family well and he does a lot of stuff on them so I might be slightly biased although I get the feeling after some of his comments this week he might not be getting as many gigs in future.

Guess I'll have to make sure I make it next time he's down this way!

true of so many comedians
especially when the tv is Live from the Apollo or similar

The Alternative Comedy Experience is worth a watch though. Filmed at The Stand in Edinburgh and captures some of the liveness of the performances

Live, the funniest I've seen have been Billy Connolly, Dara O'Briain and Rhod Gilbert.

Saw Billy ages ago (about 25 years ago) and he was excellent, and then again about 5 years ago at the Apollo when he did over two hours of non-stop belly-ache comedy.  A genius in his field, and amazing for his age.  Dara does a very good stand-up gig, with a lot of ad-libbing that makes it even more enjoyable. Again, a two-hour gig that is funny from start to finish.  I love a good rant, and Rhod Gilbert does it so well.  Saw him do a warm-up gig in Nottingham for an audience of about 100 (with Stu Hopkin), and it was very good and I'd already bought tickets to see him in Doncaster not long after - but it was still excellent.

Going to see Dara again next March - looking forward to it.

Would have loved to have seen Dave Allen.

Dave Gorman is a recent discovery for me - amazing.

Live seen Peter Kay and Michael Mckintyre.  Peter Kay is the funniest thing ever, i smile just thinking about the gig I saw.

Nina Conti is superb, Sarah Pascoe is funny too.

Kevin Bridges very good, but not sure he'll ever repeat the Glasgow Bus Stop story.

Rhod Gilbert.

Creme de la Creme however, for me, Eddie Izzard from a few years back in his prime.  Fruit Bowl, Death Star Canteen.  Never beating that.

R4 Comedy of the week on pod coast can be very funny, can be rubbish that said.  Tom Wrigglesworth latest is very funny, if a little sad.

He terrified my wife and is one of the few comedians for whom I prefer not to be on the front row. Very entertaining though, and very very funny.

If you enjoyed Nick Helm, then I think you'd also enjoy Adam Riches. Again, the front row may not be totally safe...

Have been to see Stewart Lee tonight. First time I've seen him live. Absolutely spectacular. It's a horrible cliché but my stomach muscles are aching from laughing so much.

Well paced, bitingly sharp and pedantically crafted, it was an indication of what to expect in the fourth series of Comedy Vehicle, which will be filmed later in the year.

He's touring all year, so be sure to catch him if you get the chance.

Stand up is an art form. There's no reason why it isn't possible to love both Chopin and Metallica, Rembrandt and Tracey Emin, Chekov and Strictly Come Dancing, James Joyce and JK Rowling.

Was riotous fun.

Got to agree with the Eddie Izzard pick.

I saw him by "accident" on his first ever tour.

The warmup act was a friend of a friend and we went to give him some moral support.

Eddie was sublime. Was crying with laughter. Impossible that will be bettered.

Going to see him in Durham next week. Looking forward to it.

Saw him a couple of times at The Stand during EdFringe and once in Stockton. We missed out on Durham tickets but will be catching him in York next month.

His Fist of Fun partner, Richard Herring, is also on tour, Stockton Arc next Friday :)

It's simple, funny and sweet, I think it's really good, brings out everything that's good about Kay.

The dogging scene was the funniest thing I've seen this year.
