Title: Dog food question
Post by: RED-DOG on March 06, 2015, 12:19:47 AM
I do my shopping on a Tuesday because it's the quietest day for shopping. (The weekend rush is over and the people who ran out of stuff bought it on Monday).

Annoyingly, bulk buy dog food comes in packs of 6 cans, which means I run out on Sunday. How many packs do I need to buy so that I run out on a Monday?

A man of Tom's age shouldn't be carrying 7 packs of dog food so he should buy 2 packs this Monday then next Monday another 2 packs then the following week he could buy 1 pack then 2 etc etc

Very impressive attempt by The Eso to prove he is down with us kids.

I remember when two-pack was the best type of paint for re-spraying your car or van.

Do people even have cars re-sprayed these days?

Back in the 70s a tiny bloke called Glen from Dinnington used to do our re-sprays in his converted nissen hut garage. (By converted I mean he dug a hole in the floor to use as an inspection pit).

He had no mask or breathing equipment, no extractor fans or anything. Some days, you could use his teeth as a colour chart.

Remember nissen huts? How many small businesses flourished in one of these?

have your dogs ever had dry dog food? (you can add water to make it slightly wet) I have 2 Labradors and a yorkiepoo and feed them Fish4dogs, they love it, excellent product, does not have all of the rubbish that just fills the dog out and certainly keeps them trim (if you stick to the feeding guide) and can be delivered to your house.

To be honest I've never found an ideal dog food since butchers stopped selling sheep's heads, lights, lungs and other offal. we used to boil up a two gallon pot of it until it reduced to a kind of jelly then let it cool into a solid lump that you could cut slices from. One pot would last two dogs a week and they were glossy fit.

I've tried both tinned and dry food and am not really satisfied with either. I'm using tinned at the moment because the dogs prefer it.

What are their stools like with fish4dogs? I can't be doing with watery dog shit.

Martha has Iams which has been excellent. She's staying lean and fit and her shits are beautifully formed.

Will post a pic later if I remember to take one.

Edit... Pic of the dog that is.

It's another reason I use it, because it does not have any of the added crap and fillers that the "standard" dog food has their stools are ALWAYS solid, a lot less than before and regular as clock work (twice a day when taken for a walk) compare tha to something like Wagg which meant that it was very very soft, a lot of it every time and they used to go four of five times a day hence destroying the garden. Cannot recommend it highly enough, of course as with anything some dogs are allergic, I'm sure they do tester packs which u can try. I suppose the only downside is that it cost twice or three times as much as other dog food but the benefits far out way the cost for me.

Funny how the internet works, this must be dog poo day. I read elsewhere this morning that Police dogs are trained to poo on command which is why you won't see one doing it whilst on the beat.

Half a small cooked chicken, two chopped carrots, a good handful of biscuit mixer and nearly eleven years of the happiest, shiniest dog around.

Occasional treat meal would be boiled tripe, peas and rice.

Nice composition in shot A.

Lovely healthy looking springer and a good practical mowing edge in shots B&C.

That's interesting.

How does it work in practice, do you buy your chicken ready cooked or do you cook it yourself?

How much do you cook/buy at a time?

Do you store it, and if so how?

What about the carrots?

Is your mixer just mixer or one of the complete foods that looks like mixer?

TIA.

Given the way this thread has moved (stools, composition, photos) God forbid someone starts a "Human food question" thread.

For the love of God, please don't give anyone ideas. It would be a natural progression from the fry-up thread I suppose.

Big Ron gets dried food in the morning which is just thrown all over the garden. It takes him about half an hour to find it all by which time he's ready to go back to sleep while I'm at work. Also gets him using his nose productively every day which is great for him.

In the evening he has a frozen chicken carcass, frozen mixed offal or just some more of his dried food (again scatter fed).

The carcasses come in a box of 50 carcasses for a fiver which is amazing value. There's a lot of meat on them as well as soft bones so a really good meal.

The offal/trim comes from the butchers. It's about twenty quid for 15 kilos or so. I also get a bag of mixed bones which is all thrown in to a huge bucket, mixed up and then divided in to 200g bag before freezing. I try to give him the raw food at least 5 times a week. In summer I'll put it in a 'Kong' which he chews on for hours trying to get at the meat.

His dried food is Trophy. It's strange but he actually loves it enough that I can train him using the individual pellets. They don't taste that great to me but he obviously loves them.

His shits are amazing. If you want I'll bring a couple to DTD for you to examine next time you're there.

I love the scatter feeding idea.

Are the chicken carcasses frozen when you feed them?

Yeah, bring the shits. If you find a really big one we might persuade Tony to do a slump test on it.

I can't believe she's a cocker. She must have a lot of  working stock in her pedigree.

Scatter feeding is brilliant although obviously has its drawback when the weather isn't great. Ron hasn't had a food bowl since he was about 6 months old and he still gets excited and bounces around when it's time to launch his breakfast.

Yes the carcasses are frozen when he eats them. He doesn't actually like unfrozen raw chicken for some reason, I think it's the texture he isn't keen on.

I'm due to buy a new batch soon so if you want to try a few let me know and you can have a sample.

This is getting ridiculous.
