Title: An Ape and a Notebook goes to Vegas.... yes, I'm serious!
Post by: jgcblack on April 21, 2015, 01:58:44 AM
THE STORY BIT
I'm John George Charles Black and I've played poker for around 10 years now.  For the entire time, ever since my first episode of "Poker After Dark", I've been looking over at Las Vegas, Nevada as a place that I want to go.  I'm luckier than many people in that I get to travel a lot with my day job.  I'm a techie for HMG and I've enjoyed the hospitality of huge Palaces in places like Paris and Prague, but I've also seen the mortar holes of Basra, the hovercraft you take in Sierra Leone and the armoured escorts in Libya.

During these 10 years I've gone from a guy who plays in his friends house for £5 in and everyone plays their best until inevitably we are hinted to leave by his wife and then we all go in blind last hand; all the way to someone who has literally invested £1000 in just monitors for his PC so when he plays poker it's the best it can be, it won't get in the way of my $10nl grinding (true story).  For anyone who doesn't know there is a very full, honest and bare journey through my poker learning documented on this site.

An Ape and a Notebook
http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=56559.0

In here I shared so many things, probably too many.  I did it all with the best of intentions and with the want and hunger to learn this game we love and learn to win money and respect as well.  I have both failed and succeeded in these endeavours.

I am here in order to offer an investment into a package of poker events in my first visit to Vegas.  I am a majority cash game player but like many I also play tournaments, my results considering my volume have been very positive, if not yet furnished with a big result in a bigger buyin.  My Hendon mob is here:

http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=107714

As you can see I have played a wide variety of buyins, in quite a few locations.  I have also had some results unreported to Hendon mob or ones that don't qualify.  I've won an Easter special nlhe freeze out event and a weekly rebuy at Big Bluff as well as a few more £100 irregular deep stack type events.

Adding to the tournaments shown, I have played a few UKIPT,  GPS and WPT national events with last weekends UKIPT among them (I busted when my 88 could not win on 822 vs AA).
A mini claim to fame if you call it that is spending my first ever £1k buyin in direct position on a certain Jake Cody, we were polite and mildly chatty until we got fed up losing to the rest of the table.  Only played a few hands with Jake and managed to hold my own.  In fact when we both did bust we ended up going out drinking and dancing until the early hours in Nottingham with a fair few other blondites.

I've had a couple of chances at some big scores in a few of the £500+'s I've played:
- lost 10's to Rupinder Bedi's KJ aipf for about 1/3 of the chips in play in May 2012, he went on to come second for £35k.
- lost a pot worth more than the overall day 1 chip leader finished with, 2 levels before the end of day 1 of the UKIPT nottingham £1million GTD with AQs vs K10o after making a guy blow up from the hand before's successful river call
- had KK into AA for all of the chips vs a guy we could never not value bet in a recent dtd500 when we are both top 4 on day 2. (Qxxxx in 3bp - we overbet jam river)

I know this might be somewhere I get "called" by those who have read my blog, however I haven't bluffed my way out of any of the big comps I've played as I've always picked my spots to Bluff much more carefully than most.  It may lose me some chips in the short term but I just don't believe in ego-mania for stacks.

I've played almost 80 days worth of live cash and tournaments since Sept 2013 when I started tracking it closer with an app.  We are both positive in cash games and tournaments with my tournaments having me average the top 30%, however as said above my sample size is small.

I will be playing mainly cash games in my time in Vegas, among the likes of some well known and loved UK grinders.  Even sharing a house for a while which I really hope can help me learn some valuable lessons the easy way.

However it is the WSOP and it would be a bad choice to not cherry pick a few good tournaments to take a shot at and see if I can't replicate some of my successes over there.

THE BUSINESS BIT
I will be in Vegas from 2 June until 7 July.
I am looking to sell one of two packages, either a $5k package which will include a couple of WSOP events and a deep stack or two.  Or to sell a larger package with more WSOP events and many deep stacks.  However I'm uncertain of the level of interest in a proposal such as this,

The two options are
$5000
Event 16B - $1500 millionaire maker
Event 61B - $1111 little one for one drop
Event 62 - $1500 NLHE Bounty tournament ($500 on each player)
Event 66B - $777 lucky 7's deepstack

= $4888
For easy calculations I would sell this at 1.0229 which makes it a round $5000.

$10000 package
includes events above and.....
Event 28A - $1500 Monsterstack
a selection of suggested other deepstacks e.g. The Venetian Deepstack $600 250k GTD or the $1100 1million GTD and some smaller comps,  potentially a main event small satellite tree shot.

These would aim to get as close to the 10k total as possible as my aim is to sell this package at 1.0 - please don't think this represents an uncertainty or worry about either the place, people or myself.
I am merely taking advice from a friend on here and registering that this is to be a good value investment for you as a buyer and I appreciate that there are many factors to performing well in the live arena, this is only a few tournaments and as such the variance is obviously higher than if I were playing 10k worth of $100 freezeouts.

I have both sold and bought %'s on blonde before and hope that people such as Tom Langley, Tom Kugelstadt, Eso Kral and any others who have done business with me or communicated with me can verify or vouch for my professionalism in business matters.

I will likely be playing the $5000 package whether I sell or not, however I will not be playing the 10k or any other extras without selling 50%.

I welcome any and all suggestions about event choices and locations.. I am more than happy to be guided if there is a more suitable or affordable tournament on somewhere else in Vegas.

10% is either $500/$1000
5% is $250/500
1% is $50/100
I would prefer bank transfer but cash in UK or Vegas is fine and pokerstars transfer can be accepted (if needed)

Thank you very much for reading this far.

Looks like we are going for the big package everyone!

29% gone of the 10k, there is another 21 left.

Now we need to discuss which sides to play out of the remaining $3612.

Any Vegas stalwarts think there's something better to play than the Venetian DS or some Rio comps/ satellites???

That's me, went through that mad orbit where I just had it versus him constantly. I met you about a year ago at one of the deepstacks as well I seem to recall?

Yeah I remember.... It really was impressive to watch him deal with you.

Thanks for the investment.

Also, just to confirm... I am selling 60% of the big package but it's 21 needed to meet the minimum of 50%.

Two things

Can you actually get 1.5025 ? Because advertised rates and actual are usually different

plus don't you want to wait till you have most of the money in ?

Obviously you don't want to be out of pocket so maybe check things out first ?

Fair point.
I was thinking that for those paying me in ££, I'm going to be trying to get hold of the $$ in the next week or two...

What would you suggest? That I find one place/ person to get the $$ from then find out rate and then inform people of how much it is in ££?

Title: Re: An Ape and a Notebook goes to Vegas.... yes, I'm serious!
Post by: jgcblack on April 24, 2015, 01:31:20 AM
E.g. Marky147 has sent me his 1% in ££ as per the rate yesterday.

But if I can't get that rate when buying then effectively I would be out of pocket on his 1%, correct?
And seeing as how I'm not charging a markup.... I can't be losing on it.

What's the etiquette when selling and then needing to change money's...?

Go to a site like FairFX and buy your USD.  Then use the same rate that you get to work out the £££.

Could ask around anyone you know who has been to the US lately if they have any spare $$$ around for spot.

When making returns just use the rate that you can change them up at (obv don't just go into your nearest Post Office or change up at Gatwick arrivals).

The question is when to buy your USD.  Now or after the election?  Know anyone from work that has any insight in this?

What's the etiquette when selling and then needing to change money's...?

My friend owns a post office in Sheffield and I've asked him to buy my dollars at 1.5 if /when it hits hence the reason I asked the question

If you had the funds now I d suggest buying and locking it in at that price as it's easy for  the maths  plus it's hard to believe the rate will go much higher however its pretty difficult to do anything without the £

As regards the election,  the general concensus is that if Labour get in then it will be the nut worst result for the $ exchange rate

I'm planning on getting some $$ in the next couple of weeks. Heard a friend of a friend should have a few, however don't think I'll have enough capital to buy it all on peoples behalf then send an 'invoice'.

I know travelex give you a better rate if you book in advance.  I'm actually going to the airport on Monday so ill look over this weekend.

So the plan is buy now, hope Labour win the election, win all the pokers, cash in on your return?

Or hold, Tories win the election, buy dollars at a better rate, win even more pokers, don't care about exchange rates?

Good luck, Mr B. Will be following your updates with interest.

What's the etiquette when selling and then needing to change money's...?

My general rule is as follows, though I only sell once per year, for Vegas.

I sell at "spot", on the day the cash is sent to me.

I repay at "spot" on the day I send the players their returns.

It's swings & roundabouts, sometimes I lose a tad, sometimes I make a tad. In the context of selling on a poker community, it's just important that both parties are seen to be fair & sensible. I'm pretty sure that most of those who buy action see it that way. I've never had any queries or bad blood in the 8 or 9 years I've been doing that.

Alternatively, for those who take it a bit more seriously, the OP should clarify exactly what basis for currency exchange (buying & selling) is going to be used.

Good luck in Vegas.

That's a more fun way to look at it... #electionsweats. My postal vote came through today so been looking at the paperwork and trying to figure out which way im feeling.

Thanks, really excited! I honestly think that if I can have a 'covers expenses' cash sessions and that I feel I've played my best in the tournaments... I'll be a happy chappy.  I know the tournaments will all come with big score opportunity so to have a decent run in one or two would be fantastic! And dare I imagine bringing home a little shiny thing..... well... that would be ...................... really darn amazing.

Thanks for the advice, that seems like a pretty sensible idea. I am a little worried about if people send at rate x but then I can only buy at x+y.. then is it scummy for me to prove the rate I bought at and request the extra?
Similarly, if I bought at x-y, would it be expected I sent the remainder back???

John,

I don't want to be seen to interfering, I was just explaining how I do it.

To be fair, I am a bit more laid back with these things, I only sell to friends, & we just do it for a bit of fun. My Team know the drill, it's swings & roundabouts, & there's never been a single problem. If we were going to niggle over the odd half per cent, we'd not be doing business together. It's just a case of being sensible & fair. Some years I get the wrong end of it, some years they do, but we are only talking (relatively) minute amounts.

Not interfering at all... experience and especially successful experience is most welcome.

Just seen it only makes £200 difference over the 10k so not as worrying as I thought.

Next question is trying to find places that will sell me more than a couple of thousand at one time.

Travelex is max £5000 @ 1.4739
Post office is max £2500 @ 1.4760
FairFX is max £7500 @ 1.4816

Those maximums are per day, all delivered to your door.

I understand he does, however don't have a direct link.  Potentially fostering one through a mutual friend as we speak..

Will do £10,000 by post @1.5035. Insurance costs £19.60.
Or £10,000 @1.4936 in a branch.

I've used their branch service a few times without problems.

So the plan is buy now, hope Labour win the election, win all the pokers, cash in on your return?

Or hold, Tories win the election, buy dollars at a better rate, win even more pokers, don't care about exchange rates?

Good luck, Mr B. Will be following your updates with interest.

That's the 2 scenarios Simon of course it would be nice to know the election outcome now  :)

Yove got to have  a plan so I've made an instruction to buy at 1.5 because when people buy percentages it's so much easier when everybody knows the conversion rates plus 1.5 is easy to work out when in the US

Thanks for your good luck wishes

Hey

Have you guys finalised a schedule for this yet ?

I'm assuming every tournament John enters in Vegas will be in ( don't want binks and " that one wasn't included " scenario )

Cheers

when do you get to vegas John? Come meet me for breakfast one morning this week and we go through it all.
good stuff

Hey all, super pumped now and only one day of work left (today) then off until I leave on Tuesday morning.

Current plan as I see it is as follows.
The 5 events already mentioned which totals 6388.
The plan with the rest is to cherry pick the other nlhe big guarantee events, ive been told there's a huge Aria one and there are obviously some big Venetian Deepstacks.  If there are any good value wsop ME seat comps then I will propose those and see how many backers are happy?

I have been approached since this sold out by other potential backers requesting to put me into some wsop ME satellites specifically.  As yet nothing has been spoken about as I said I have a package sold I need to play first.  The original buyers will get first dibs on anything else out of loyalty and then I will go to those other backers as requested.

I would ideally like to have a fully worked out schedule prior to starting the first event.  That gives me a few days yet in the UK and a couple full days in Vegas.

If there are any questions or concerns please message me or post here and I'll be keeping a closer eye on this from now on.

Thanks
jb

Definitely some good ones to look at there pads...

I'm keen to play at least one main event satellite, allows for the ultimate sweat. :)

From memory there is a large gap between the 'monster stack' and the wsop ones at the end.  So I was looking for good value tournaments around the 18-28th June period.

Been grinding cash in london this weekend, I really do love playing cash with people who don't know me.  I get normal amounts of credit.  In MK I'd never get these through. :) bring on vegasssssss!

Playing the Rio daily deepstack for $235 as a warmup event.

Let's get this show on the road.

For those who don't know, my twitter is @realjohnblack and ill try and do updates and fun life stuff while I'm here.

Up early, went for a run on the treadmill and played some pool volleyball! Our house isn't safe as we have these "nerf" bows n arrows that really pack a punch, more like a catapult.

I really just can't believe I'm in Vegas.
Walking past world champions for fun, seeing the ballers in the hu $10k, even bumped into Simon Deadman.

I was under the assumption we have action in every tournament unless notified earlier.

99% sure John means for the 235 to be on stake.

Confirmed.

The 235 was agreed yesterday as a good and comfortable use of the yet unallocated $$.

I wanted to have a fixed plan for which tournaments to play and still intend on making a schedule to detail the use of the $.
I just felt much better than I expected yesterday and played a little cash. Got to bed nice and early and up with Ryan today as he was in the Rio for the 6max 1500.

Currently today has been a test of patience.  Lost every single pot so far and we are 3 levels in.  Have a fantastic table but can't find a hand.

We've opened KQ and cbet then cf on Q10xcc7c.
flatted QQ to late position raise from bb with whale peeling in small. Comes AKxAhhx and we don't lose another chip.  Whale did a lot with 58hh and raiser had K8o.

Have 9150 and grinding at 150/300/25.

Apologies for the ambiguity.

Also, I plan on keeping the receipt for every tournament and getting a photo of them all for proof should anyone request it.

Ryan can vouch or be quizzed if anyone has concerns.

We busted the deepstack..
After rebuilding up nicely to 35K we lose a few small ones. Then get KK and the whale opens.  The table has changed and there is an aggressive young guy on my direct left and some short stacks on his left.

We flat pre, everyone folds.

Flop QJxr

He bets and we call

Turn x
he puts me in.... last time he did this he showed AQ. So we snap and he tables QJ.

:( no pairup.

Pretty excited for tomorrow....
millie maker here we come!

Today I had my first skydive and it was incredible.  Was a little frustrated afterwards with my last couple days cash being even-ish overall when I've bluffed in a few huge cash pots and been heroed by pretty weak hands.  Checked the ego today and had godmode enabled!!! Managed to win a good amount and rescue the fees from the skydive and some.

Didn't blow up at all and then rounded the day off with a free dinner courtesy of Mr 10 high.  Chicken n mango salad so we are fueled correctly for tomorrow! ;)

For those without twitter we are having a great first day in first event.

Slow start but managed to make a couple of really nice bets to take down pots when we didn't have it and get paid when we did.

Highlight so far is a 3bt pre and bet, tank bet, tankier shove....

On JxxxJ.

Don't worry, we had AA and got the full double.

Have 37350 at 100/200/25.

Few frustrating pots but still have 23k and change going back to 200/400.

Highlight was sb  Ahrt 2h vs bb  Qc Jc on  Kh Ac 6c  7h 2c.

:(

Moans it in....

AK vs AQ aipf for one double and KK vs 1010 aipf for an almost double.

27k at 250/500/50

Could be some fun hand histories coming up.

I'm trying to grind it slowly and steadily, however we have the chip leader 2 to my right and he keeps over bet jamming 50% of hands he is in.

Just had 67dd vs his 45o on Q89dd. We check back river and call a bet on 6s.
he fires again  huge and we fold.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey..............

Busted first hand back from dinner break...

99 vs K2o of the chip leader crazy Asian guy.

Feeling really happy about the way I played today. Definitely a little looser than perfect preflop vs people once I was happy with playing vs them, but didn't let that make me get into any sticky spots and didn't give away many if any chips lightly.

Couldn't seem to hold when I was ahead in the small ones.

Never mind... carry on, next one.

On the fun side I've said hello to a few pros today, Somerville and Seiver, both super friendly and happy to chat for a few mins.

in the 10 handed tourneys you just gotta play very tight day 1, once you get the stack should cruise through.

people in these tourneys just waiting to give their chips away, stay patient and you'll be fine.

Title: Re: An Ape and a Notebook goes to Vegas.... yes, I'm serious!

Yeah I'm trying....

Busted the big stack I built on the Aria with  Tc 8c vs  Ac Kc on  Jc 6c 5h 9c in a 3 bet pot.

We both have huge chips with 30k at 150/300, he 3bt big and we peeled, I was really comfortable with his sizing that it wasn't an AA type size. Much more likely JJ/AK.

Obv great flop for us and turn the winner vs anything except AK/AQcc.

We lose that and then our remaining 13 bb goes in with AQ vs JJ aipf.

Not to be yet....

De registered the Friday Monster stack as a housemate has made final 30 in Venetian Deepstack 1600....

Gary Banks for those that know him.

Everyone is going early so let's hope it's a long first rail.

Been a tough week poker wise,  managed to lose some big cash pots with AA vs 45 on A 24 and A7 vs AA on K75A5.

Keep grinding away though, even sampled some Rio SNG action today. Lost 66 vs AK for Hu in a $275 vs a guy I'm confident I'd be a big favorite against.

WSOP Monster Stack day two made.
We have heaps of chips, 151,600.

Unsure yet, but think I might even be top 10%.

I really feel like I played some of my best tournament poker ever, absolutely hammerred my table after recognising early on that only 1 person was going to try and play back without a genuine hand.

I'm sorting a lift out atm, but ill do a mini day report when I get home.

So today....

Unsure where to start, just had a great day.. slowly up the whole day.
We started the first level with a raise/call, cc down on QJx10x for half a guys stack, we have Q10ss he instamucks.

The table was completely up for grabs as no one was doing anything without a made hand.  I slowly chipped up and then got into a little tumble with a player from Newcastle where I raise pre, c bet,  cbet/call call  Ad Th on 782dd710 which I hate in retrospect.

A few other hands and some really nice thought out plans.

Today marks my first ever raise/4bt/6bt Bluff with KQo... I knew the guy was at it vs me and stacks were perfect for it.
I open to 450 @100/200/50, he 3bt to 1950, I make it 5200, he makes it 9000, I shove for 23k he snap folds.

BOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
(I do have to admit that I had the absolute fear that I get snapped by AK and have to explain to you all....)

Other highlights include trying to get someone to fold A high on 108862 with my KJ for 2/3 pot, I get called and win.

I tried to make a Bluff with the Ad on Q104dd7d8o.... but I bet too big and forgot that tourney pros don't bet that big for value. He called, I was sad.

I rallied and played really well the rest of the day, finding some chips every orbit it felt like.

Tried my hardest to avoid flips all day but ended up in a big one with JJ vs AK bvb.  I open to 1500 and the bb snap 3bt to a handful of yellows (1k), based on live reads I was not folding and put the lot in.  He snapped with AK and we hold on Q42Q4 for a 50k pot at 300/600/50.

Dinner break arrived and I had a huge massage, chilled on a cash game to destress and then went back feeling so good!

The last few levels went relatively uneventful, I bashe'd up Timoshenko in his first hand where I open 89o, he peels bb and we cbet K78hh,  he calls and stares as I cbet a turn 7.
He check raises turn big and I felt really happy with a call.  River is a complete brick and he tank gives up with Jh 9d.  Half his stack gone and we wound him again next hand with a rejam of 33 from bb to his btn open.  Within an orbit he then gets in KK vs A2cc on 478cc and gg on 5c turn.

Grind to the end and in the last 30 minutes I have
55 vs JJ aipf on K5299
JJ vs A2 aipf hold
AK vs QQ aipf on J10xKx
a few other small value hands and we finish with 151600 which is good for 12th today according to wsop.com

Super buzzing right now and just ready to get back into it......

Day 3 any danger???

I love a JB trip report.

It's like reading about when I play with every gory detail, succes, spew and misstep. Such heart and passion, and clearly a thinking brain too.

VBOL John and I hope you and stakers get the lot.

In a big comp.

Done it for $7.49 on stars....

But this one was planned, prepared and really got my confidence locked in for the rest of the day...

This was one of those moments you read about where the guy says "it was always mine to lose, I knew it from then..."

Thanks for the well wishes...
up and getting some breakfast, let's go!

Busted....

Really frustrated and a little bit annoyed overall with today's play, I played the best 90 mins of tournament poker I ever have at the start of the day.  I chipped up really well with little to no risk to 220k from my 150k start. Then I lost  4s 5s vs  Qs Jh on  Aspades 6s 8s where I open HJ pre and he peels from 30k at 8/1600.  He jams over my cbet and finds  Ks river to take a little one.

We rebuild again confidence is high, there's only one half decent guy who is playing back at us.  We decided to peel the button with  Jc Ts arter he opens UTG and gets another peel.  The sb completes and we see a flop four ways.

7c 7h 6s

He cbet 6.5k into roughly 14k and gets a fold, I raise to 15k,  sb folds and he calls.

Turn
 2c
he checks and I bet 15k,  with the intention of betting big on most rivers, he calls.

River
8c
he checks and I take a few seconds before putting him in... For 70k effective.

At this stage I've put a few people all in without showdown and I know it's grating on the table.  I've chipped up and the two times people have snapped vs me and put it in, I've called with 1010 vs KQhh pre and held and the other was the flush above.
In my head I thought this guy would really be in pain here, having not had any proof I was at it despite suspecting it.  I have shown down three different hands with suited connectors and had the best hand, highlighting that I'm playing a lot of connected cards preflop.

He says "I knew you were going to do that..." and takes a minute or so before standing up and getting ready to leave as he puts the call in.   Sigh balls!!

I really tried to make sure I didn't do anything crazy or mental at all during the tounament, I only made two bluffs for any more than 20bb and both of them got called, clearly not picking my spots well enough!

If I am him on the flop, there just isn't a run out I can picture that I want to see, the guy raising has been very good aggressive and is unlikely to give up on bluffs and I can't tell when I  being value owned.  I'd be in pain from the flop with any two pair hand which is the majority of my range.  Apparently he had an over pair and figured the aggro guy is bluffing again......

Feel like I let every one down with this one.  I had such a good start it's going to be hard to get into a 31/2000 players and have a good table draw, again.

After that Bluff I played the best I could and made a few careful folds in order to preserve tournament life where I could have otherwise taken a spot when I thought I was good.  I made a misread vs a new-ish player where I called his short stack shove on 47810cc with K10o and he had the 56.  That was a bad call I think, in retrospect, the spot just looked so golden for him.

Other than the two mistakes above,  I grinder my position and stack as well as I could.  I couldn't get any real action with AA or 1010,  had a very unpredictable Argentinian on my right which made a few hands more complex than they needed to be,  I took the fold route more often than raise because of this and it definitely contributed to the cash.

Our bust out was a button jam for 59k at 2500/5000/500 with K2o, the small blind tanks off with A10o and we find the 234 flop.... 3 turn..... but A river.  Almost held.

Cashed for $2815, so can do whatever people want with this...?

I will not be spending that much in a Bluff again vs an American!!!! It really has surprised me how little they fold once they make a pair.

Next one coming up is the Venetian Deepstack which starts tomorrow but I will probably play the Tuesday or Wednesday day 1.  One of my house mates ran deep in last week's one so ill ask him for any tips that might help.

Other than that, one flag in the bag, another lesson learnt I hope and let's move on!

Busted

For those who have twitter they might be surprised to hear this seeing as how I had over double average less than an hour ago.  I don't think I have made a mistake all day, however I am willing to discuss the first of the two "fun" flips.

UTG opens to 800 @ 200/400/50 and we flat 33 playing 40k fold and new player to the table in first hand 3bt to 2850, folds back to me and with my read I was certain he is light and so decide to put on the maximum pressure and put him in for his 15k.  He takes a couple of minutes and tank calls with no history and no clue about me with  Kc Tc. #wpsir.

Runs out J687K,  sigh.....

He then decides he wants to play every hand for the next orbit and wins most with some less than premium hands, I recognise that I now haven't got enough bb to try and battle and clearly don't need to versus him.

We don't play a hand for an orbit or two and lose a tiny one bvb with 86dd vs Q2o on QJ9dd AcKh.

After another orbit we have around 13.5k at 200/400/50 and UTG opens for 900, I find  Th Td and our new "friend" is on the button, I suspect he might squeeze here more than he should given his actions so far, there is a flat behind me then our hero 3bt button for 4800,  UTG has visibly had enough and is sufficiently tilted that he snap 4bt all in....
I tank for a minute and get both bets counted just to confirm what I already think, I'm reshoving.  After a minute or so I rejam over UTG's 12k and get snapped off by our hero who proudly tables AQo..... geeeeeeeeeg bro, UTG has A7hh and my 10's are in great shape for a triple.

Qxxxx.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeg.

Tournament poker requires flips apparently.

Unlucky us but honestly think we only made one small bad river call all day.

I wished him the very best of luck and meant it, next time....

Post by: jgcblack on June 18, 2015, 02:22:32 AM
Any thoughts on the two flips?

One suggestion from a housemate is to just let him try and be aggro, our huge cushion of chips will provide us with plenty of protection for now and he is almost certainly flipping vs our hand if he does call, also that we could potentially just make it 6200-7200/ call instead of just put him in.

Ryan has been talking a bit about these kind of spots and how smaller sizing's can be scarier I.E. If we know we're stacking off then maybe raising to 40% of our stack instead of using it all can be much scarier and leverage more fold equity in some situations.

Thoughts??

I'd just fold hand 1. Just take low variance lines and let your hedge post flop show.

Hand 2 seems standard

Planet Hollywood $1150 today and we tried but struggled to win a pot for some time...

Slowly chipped down and kept trying to make sure pots stayed sensibly small.  It worked as we missed draws and our tp hands didn't win by the river.

A few hands in at the start I open QcQh, get one call on the button by an older chatty fun guy.  Flop is K105 all spades and I just check fold flop, I'd seen this guy play two hands so far and sizing's were huge.. I didn't want to be heroing half my stack by river.

Then a few small ones and we still can't win.

I had one big hand during the day, it's a slightly controversial one and I've spoken to Ryan, Fraser and Pads already.

At the time I thought my play was pretty standard but in retrospect I agree with them.

There's an open to 800 from our fishier older guy and a flat from a reg, unlikely he has a huge hand here vs this guy imo.
I decide to 3bt AJo to 2.5k in the CO, button folds then I'm looking at the BB when he peels and he is def liking his hand but to me looked like the face of "I have a pair... they're good/ these are two big pretty cards" type thing.  He is new to the table and I can see him putting the 2.5k together for a call, somehow he accidentally picks up a 5k chip, and from his reaction to the dealers announcing a raise I still now believe this was à genuine mistake.

The raiser and reg fold, reg and I give each other a look saying "did you see that too??".

Because of this I decide to flat pre as I felt if he did acidentally do this then he isn't likely to give it up without a fight but I can't imagine him blowing completely.

I call pre and see a J68 board,

He cbet small and I decided that getting great price and not needing to raise as we now have a value hand. I call.

Turn brings another brick relative to the action and
River is a offsuit 8 and

We call down his small sizing's.. then get told "your probably winning..." and he tables. KK.

I was a little bit upset to say the least but bottom line he completely owned me.. Well payed sir.

We have 9k after the hand at 2/400 and grind and grind... eventually getting back to 23kish.

Was being really snug and careful, no positional only raises with J2o or 93ss as I didn't want to waste a single chip.

Then we find AK in the sb just a few minutes for the dinner break at4/800 and flat the MP open to underrep our hand and try to induce something from the bb if possible... bb squeezes to 7k over the 2k open, then MY re jams for just covering us and we re jam our 22k.  Bb calls and we have AK vs AA MP and QQ of the BB.  Shame!
Didn't make a draw... shame. :)

Sorry guys.  Next one!

Vegas isn't a real place, it doesn't have real people and it just feels so strange every time I say it - "I'm in Las Vegas".

I am enjoying it, the house and guys have made it a great trip.

Just it's a tough place to be when losing... someone else is always getting the cake, every day!

Still left to play I believe are the
$1500 bounty
$1111 one drop
$777 lucky 7's
$565 aria second day 1

No second bullet at Planet Hollywood today?

Two questions:

1. Why are the tables long and thin (so the dealers can't reach) and the chairs too low?

2. Rule announcement: if player A bets on the river, player B calls and A then says, "I was bluffing; you win" and mucks, player A gets a one hand penalty. He must show his cards. WTF?!

Yeah thanks mate... I thought my showing down multiple winning suited connectors hands was going to be enough to get credit for a 7.
apparently not.

One drop?

Played one drop 10am today and made day 2 with 43k, going back to 500/1000/100, plenty!

Had a really good table today for first half and did well first few hours then had a slightly older pretty aggressive guy who managed to dodge when I had big hands/draws and to own me when I had A high with check raises and suchlike.
I didn't blow, instead I trapped him with my KK and got my chips back and then got on a roll.

The table changed so much today and took a lot of adjusting... There were times I was raising 4 pots an orbit then times I didn't open anything other than 99+/AQo+ because of the aggression coming back to me.

Really feel like I went through the gears very necessarily so and tried to target the right people with my aggression and my post flop attempts.

Toward the end of the day my table became incredibly tough... Artur Corren (spelling) on my direct left and a high stakes reg he knew two to his left with a competent reg in between.... - zero room to manoeuvre.

I made a misread to cost me some chips at one point... The guy was bluffing.... but with a hand better than my 77's. :(

I managed to find a few premium hands but couldn't get people to put in QQ pre when I have AA.. he flats and it comes Axx.... can't win more.
I also avoided a couple of flips with pairs IP to AK and managed to slowly chip back up.

We won a key flip with AK vs JJ aipf, with 99 already calling us but folding to JJ jam. 3 way up!!!!!!

Happy with today's play and although my stack feels tiny, it's 43bb..... Let's go!!!

Really patted myself on the back for not doing anything silly yesterday after the 77 mistake, we went down to 22bb after that and grinded a couple of hours without spewing or making any silly shoves.

Best of luck today

I'm not 100% sure on what the bounty is in the bounty event, I think 500? But the bigger it is the more significant.

If the worst happens and you do bust the One Drop I wouldn't register it too late, a lot of your "EV" comes from winning bounties, and you can play lots of hands if you cover the table because you can always threaten their stacks. Registering and not covering anyone is a bad spot to be in which is a shame as I know how much you like to overbet any turn or any river if you can find an excuse ;).

Just make day 3 and don't worry about that :)

Fair point..

Ive wanted to play the bounty event since before the series but can't be upset about that when I'm busy making day 3 of the one drop. :)

If I bust... I'll see how I feel and how late it is.  I agree being able to cover everyone in each hand is definitely key.

We have Dominic Panka on our table.. he has 80bb. Right then.....

Play my hands and positions as well as I think I could have..

Lost Q10cc btn vs Fatima De melo Q5o on Q82r for a small pot early on.

Folded 77 utg with 20bb
Got AKo through pre with 10bb and then jammed 77 for 10bb over an open from table chip leader young guy MP.  He calls and has 88 and out suits covered.  We make a flush as well..... :(((((

Only missed one spot where I could've jammed J2cc bvb when I had 14bb. Turns out he has 25o but think I get called a lot there.

My suggestion is that we don't play the bounty because late regging does seem counter intuitive.  However I think a rio deepstack is going to be fine to late reg a couple of levels in....

So I'm planning on jumping in that in a few mins.  If anyone doesn't want it then their action can be taken out.

Just post on here or PM.

The blinds are 100/200 with a 25 ante out of a 7500 starting stack so still loads of play

Was too late for the Rio deepstack, so I've had some food and currently sat on cash.

What do the actual backers think about the bounty??

Pads has said no
Fraser says yes
I'm easy for either....

Everyone else?

Considering this is my first input and it was in the initial schedule I've told John to reg it now. He's stood next to me now..off to reg

Regging a bounty event when you start off pretty shallow anyway 6.5 hours late is just going to be really awful.

I messages Jon 3 times Saying not to play it.

David mentioned pre tournament about it too.

I think John knows he shouldn't play the tournament.. No idea why you would reg.

Whatever, it's done now, but pretty bad idea imo and relatively unhappy having 20%!

Obviously this is the time we gonna bink :D

1-2 hours may be ok, 6.5 is way too late.

Maybe i got this totally wrong and event started at 4. If so I sincerey apologise.

Had QQ in bb when CO shoves K9o.

We held on 9xxxJ

28300 at 2/400/50. Average is 26k.

Got another bounty.... One more for a freeroll.

Had AA otb and a "fantasy draft" player - Josh Brikis opens to 1000, I 3bt to 2700, flatted by chatty IT chip leader guy and then Josh tank shoves AQo.

No sweat and we are on the way up.
-------------------------------------

God mode truly enabled, winning 3 pots an orbit and up to 65k-ish.

Got a new guy at the table who has similar stack...

Just bricked Jh8h on A102r Khh somehow! :)

Turn 3s

That pot was 70k ish at 400/800.

Registered and busted the 777 already.

Played a couple of small pots, then had 22 vs KQo aipf there are a few limps from some old guys and an iso from the young guy button with headphones and hoody and good sizing's.

He tanks off KQ and we can't hold through the first card.  Turned a flush draw that wasn't good... :(

One more left! Aria main event round 2 it is!!!

Went to register for the last tournament, the Aria 2mil $565.

The queue was so long that I would have been 280 on the alternates list, they estimated that it would take 3 hours to get through it.  With this and feeling a little bit under the weather today (poker tired I think) I've decided to play the turbo tomorrow from the start instead of today's from 4 levels in.

We've got one more chance to make a day 2 and beyond, it's been a fun series even though I've not had the dream we all think about.  I've definitely learned some lessons about both vegas and myself, got a plan or idea for what I want to do differently the next time and most importantly what did work well, what was positive and constructive.

I need to work on my tournament game as I want to be playing more and more and I know it's a fast moving world.

Just doing it quickly because it's ruddy early in the morning...

Think total refunds are 2815+1000.

I've been told there are mains sats in the Rio over the next couple of days, thoughts??

And we are out of the Aria WPT 500.

Lady raises to 600 at 100/200 and we flat 99 in CO.  Mike Sexton shoves from BB for 50bbish, ive got 40.  She tank folds JJ and we call 99.

QAxxx

Shame.. I'm obv going to be flipping a lot but I'm really happy that he will have some worse pairs... occasionally 10 10 and a lot of flip hands, esp in a turbo and with the older lady having made it clear she's a bit of a fan boy for Mike.

So now heading to the Rio for both cash, sng, mega's or a deepstack...

I'm considering one bullet at one mega sat for main ??????

Title: Re: An Ape and a Notebook goes to Vegas.... yes, I'm serious!

So today we have the following options...
1000 Mega Sat $550
1300 Mega Sat $1060
1400 Turbo Mega $235 into tonight's 8PM $2080
1500 Rio Deepstack $235
1600 Mega Sat $550
1800 Rio Deepstack $185
2000 Mega Sat $2080
2200 Rio Deepstack $135

My suggestion is we hop in the 1000 $550, seeing as I'm here right now...

Then also play the $1k at 1300.

Anyone who doesn't want action in these please say so and refunds will be intact as is right now.

Let'sget ourselves into that bloody Main!

Not a put down but 99 very ambitious against Sexton considering his ABC poker style

I don't mind you playing satelites for the main but if you win a seat you're going to have to seriously adjust and find the fold option more given that they are 2 hour levels and it's a serious grind

Fair enough on the 99 hand... maybe it's a little quick but in the turbo format and considering he is abc but also good enough to spot that this is an incredible squeeze spot. We were about 60 seconds from 150/300 making my stack (8500ish) a pretty big change.

Pleno - sure on the 20%, what do you mean re-evaluate...? But you want % of the 235 into the 2k?

Don't take the comments to heart mate....just deem them as helpful

Pads got a lot on his plate at the moment

Put him down for 20 % of the 235s you play....He will be fine ( if he's not ill pay)

Get playing and good luck

No, I didnt take it as anything other than "might not have been best play".

We've flipped out of a lot of our tournaments and I actively try to avoid flips.  I was merely thinking that in this structure and this spot, 99 were close... tbh probably the line.  And in the interest of building a stack in a turbo I went with it.

So everyone else is in for the mega's except pads.  Cool.

Time to now mention that we've bust the 550 twice and wanted to find out what people think about the 1k??

Bust outs were rapid and solid.
1st bullet was half stack with KJ vs J8 on J62810
second half stack with KK vs 45hh in 3bp on QJ7hh.
2nd bullet was AA vs K10 all in on K465.

Didn't last an orbit in either bullet.

Since then been on cash and continued to lose every pot we were all in for with best hand for two hours. Just did a hold with AK vs A9 aipf so maybe it's turning!

The 1k mega starts in a few mins but ill wait till 1330 to see who is interested?

I think we might call it a day there then...

No more entries.  So 2815 total refunds to all. (Needs to be adjusted for pads not having 20% in the 2x 500)

I don't really plan on playing tomorrow.. Fancy a pool party or something maybe.

Title: Re: An Ape and a Notebook goes to Vegas.... yes, I'm serious!
Post by: jgcblack on July 11, 2015, 01:20:52 AM
By my calculations we had 3815 in returns before the wsop satellites.

3815 x 0.2 is $763 back to Pads
then 3052 - 1000 for 2x 500 mega sat.
2052 ÷ 80 (because it's not a full 100 without pads) is $25.65 is £16.52 @ 1.55 today's rate on xe.com

So we're looking at 16.52 per 1%.

Can everyone PM me their bank details please..

Thanks again to all and I guess we need to hold our fingers tighter next time and not try to make people fold pairs.....

Just been a mini life whirlwind since I got back, I was kinda awaiting all payment details from everyone so I could do it in one go.  So far only received a few.

I'll do who I have details for now, apologies for the delay.

To do on stars pads all I'll be doing is depositing then transferring,  just as easy for me to send direct....
