Not sure whether to post in here or the "Mundane things you've never done thread".

I've never eaten an Eccles cake.

I've not eaten one either - it looks like a squashed, badly made mince pie. Something which even Mary Berry would scowl at.

Pontefract cakes are better.

Did you know that 87% of all liquorice grown in the UK is grown in Pontefract & the surrounding areas?

And almost all of that liquorice is used in the manufacture of........cigarettes?

Incred, & that MANTIS fella thinks we don't have interesting stuff on blonde. Outrageous, we have a whole wall of it. Proper wall, too. THATS a wall sunshine.

Pontefract cakes aren't even cakes, and lol at anyone who falls for the old 'growing liquorice' gag. That one was past it's prime when Esther Ranzen used it as an April Fools joke on That's Life is 1972.

Little known fact about the Eccles cake, and it may possibly be just a myth, but in the early 1800's the recipe was stolen by a Staffordshire  baker from its original location from a bakery in Manchester. He then produced this cake on mass. However, he could not sell his wares as word had got out that the recipe had been stolen and only genuine cakes from the Eccles area should be purchased and eaten. The baker, whose name was Tom Biscuitman, then had a dilemma on what to do with the ones he had produced. He decided to put them in storage for the time being in a massive hall outside his village. When his crime was discovered, the whole hall was burnt down and the cakes destroyed.
This is how the historic village of Eccleshall in Staffordshire  was created.

Anyway....I dont like them.

STAFFORDSHIRE OATCAKES are so much better ;)

Eccles cakes (shouldn't they be protected by the EU btw) are glorious if made and baked correctly.

They were originally made from the scraps of pastry left from making other dishes for example pies so that nothing went to waste with dried fruit.

Licorice huh. Rubbish, not even a cake. Put that into your licorice pipe and smoke it.

Can't beat Gur Cake.

So called as it was often eaten by Dublin gurriers.

(Gurrier originally came the French for fighter, but has been a common Dublin word for a young rascal for a long time.)

Anyway, you need to try Gur Cake.

Fig rolls, they're like marmite. Sort of.

But if you do like them, they're undeniably moreish. This photo shows the minimum number of fig rolls that can be eaten in one go:

They date back to ancient Egypt apparently.

That reminds me of a time when Ralph and I were going to some or other poker tournament in the car. Suddenly he announced, "I'm starving, we'll have to stop and eat".

I had visions of McDonald's or KFC but he pulled in to the first lay by, opened a brown paper bag containing about 5 dates, ate two of them, closed the bag and said, "Right! Let's go".

PS My dad loved Eccles cakes.

They are very similar but Eccles cakes are more densely loaded up with dried fruit, and the pastry outer is sturdier and more case-like.

Both delish tho.

Correct - our local baker made some Eccles cakes so I took the mother-in- law 3/4 round ,lovely she declared
When I was away her daughter took some banburys round .not so lovely she declared ! Less fruit and bound together by some cake type mix ! They look the same tho
So don't be fooled

I am reliably informed that hignfy did an Eccles cake joke. Something about if you microwave an Eccles cake, the sugar in it catches fire, which prompted a panelist to quip, "You can't have your Eccles cake and heat it too".

Not their finest hour.
