My only advice on this one would be to relax, it is impossible to get wrong.

At the moment, €500 ~ £350, based on a rate of 1.426 on xe.com

But that's not a rate you can get anywhere, a reasonable rate might be 1.406 (So £355) and a crap rate might be 1.37 (so £365)

In other words, it would be tough to make more than a £15 mistake here.  If you have the time and inclination, you can research money order services, or can visit in person at one of the better fx places.  If you don't have time or can't be bothered, you could get them in a bank the day before for a £15 hit, or maybe even at the airport for a £20 hit.

Bit late for next time but i would suggest getting a Nationwide flexplus account.  There literally is no hassle with foreign ex with this account as you go to an atm aboard just like you do in the UK and get For ex at spot rate with no fees/commission/bad rates etc.  Means you can withdraw cash as and when you need it rather than carrying it all at once from the start of the holiday.  Account costs £10 a month but offers huge benefits (if you keep £2500 in the account the monthly interest you get at 3% virtually covers the monthly fee so you get all the benefits listed on the link below for free - which for a family of 4 would equate to way more than £120 a year in fees).  Roughly every £500 you withdraw in cash aboard with this card will save you £15 compared to doing it on any normal bank card in the same manner.

Martin Lewis top recommended current account on the market.

There is a £200 refer a friend offer at the minute running which is literally getting paid £100 to upgrade your bank account to a much superior bank account.  I did this with Cambridge Alex and we both got £100 with no hassle at all from Nationwide as soon as he signed up if anyone is interested PM me.

Hi thanks for the responses guys. Glad no reason to panic I just had a feeling you lot would know best ways and if it's not going to make too much difference might just get in high street as long they don't have silly rates.

I have one of these accounts and can deffo recommend it. Another + for it is worldwide travel insurance, very useful if you go away frequently.

Mark ,Assuming you get all these benefits in Vegas this seems like a no brainier. Is it a debit card too ? plus can you go to a local bank abroad and get cash out over the counter ?

Thanks In Advance

It is a standard debit card current account.  No idea about going to a local bank aboard and getting cash out.  Nationwide don't have branches outside the UK so not sure how that would work.

Cheers

Obviously good for cash machines abroad and casinos that take debit cards like Dublin for example .

For tournaments in Vegas its cash only in the Rio and every other casino I've played from memory ( unless people can tell me contrary please )

think Ill make some enquiries and prob scare them off with some poker based questions  :)

There are some fees on debit card transactions i think aboard.  It is just cash withdrawls which are 100% fee/commission free at spot rate.  So when i go aboard i just pay for everything in cash.  I prefer this anyway as i am not keen shipping my card into loads of dodgy restaurants etc with skimming potential.

If going Tenerife the rate is ten cents over the rate here in most places

Pretty sure most/all ATMs in Vegas charge a withdrawal fee. How much that works out at compared with getting spot for your exchange is obv a factor
