Title: Gigs/festivals 2017
Post by: hhyftrftdr on February 13, 2016, 12:20:43 PM
Who are you seeing this year? Any festivals on the wish list? Bands or artists you hope announce a tour? Ones that got away?

Already seen.....The Kooks

Booked.....The Rifles, Manic Street Preachers supported by Editors, Ocean Colour Scene supported by Shed Seven and the Bluetones.

Hope they tour.....White Lies

Considering.....Bluetones in York in April.

One that got away.....The Coral in Leeds; hesitated and it sold out :(

Festivals....a one day shindig in Derby in April, spread across various pubs in the city, headlined by Reverend And The Makers. Was only £20 a pop. Just booked a day ticket to Best Kept Secret festival near Eindhoven over in the Netherlands in June. It's a Friday to Sunday job, but we're just going for the Saturday when Editors and Bloc Party, amongst others, perform.

Inmusic festival looks good, has some well known acts playing like Florence ATM, Kooks, Skunk Anansie (remember them?), PJ Harvey, The Coral. Only 40Eur for the 3 day pass. Not feasible for me as its right on the back of Best Kept Secret, and its in Zagreb :) Shame really, as I've never been to Croatia and really fancy it. Maybe next year.

Is there a festival that Noel Gallagher isn't headlining in the UK?!

Went to see Parkway Drive ar Brixton Academy last night with my 9yrold son, cos they're one of his favourite bands. Awesome gig, probably a bit much for the boy but he said he enjoyed it. Hopin to go see a few more shouty screamy metal bands this year but really hoping to go to Camden Rocks again this year. Went last year and the highlight was being front row for Skindred. Lawnmower Deth were entertaining too.  Gonna see what's in in Cambridge,Ipswich and Norwich as quite a few decent tour there.

^Few friends went to Parkway Drive last night said it was v good, hadn't heard of them before now though :$

I haven't been to a gig in a long time, do plan on rectifying that this year.

Tomorrow seeing Barns Courtney? in Bodega in Nottingham, tiny venue so should be good fun.

Used to go to Reading festival every year with a big group, was awesome, not too keen now though more likely to go abroad if I were to do a festival again.

I'd like to go and see Parkway Drive, instead I'm seeing Coldplay at Wembley.

Prob not much else planned for the year gig wise.

Impressive, 9 years old and going to Parkway Drive gigs! My first gig wasn't until I was 15, when Supergrass played in York in early 2003. I guess times were different then; no Youtube, no downloading, more radio based popularity and TOTP etc.

Whats the demographic like at a Parkway Drive gig in 2016?

They all look young to me. Teens/20's mainly

Ennio Morricone and Machinehead are my next two gigs probably says enough about my Music taste.
Glastonbury and Latitude in the Summer, with a few randoms booked in-between.
Slowly picking up the pace again after the arrival of the girls.

My eldest is 3 and attended Latitude last summer will hopefully see much more outdoor music this summer. Cant wait to take her to an indoor gig. The line seems to be set at 9.

Had a very quiet January but made up for is in Feb - Floating Points and Ben UFO/Pearson Sound/Pangaea the last couple of weekends

Bicep & Will Saul coming up in a few weeks

Going to Glastonbury for the first time this year too so looking forward to that. Hopefully Muse land one of the headline slots. Saw them on the Absolution and Black Holes & Revelations tours so its been a while!

Noel Gallagher's HFB are headlining Kendal Calling, Y Not, Victorious and Festival Number 6. This is off the back of an extensive tour taking him to South America, OZ and NZ, Europe and various venues around the UK.

All the cash earned from that ^ will pale into insignificance when the inevitable Oasis reunion is announced.

Saw The Kooks in Nottingham last month and really enjoyed that.  Next up it is Muse at the O2 in April.....not my cup of tea really but hey ho it's a jolly.

Last year was great with seeing Blur in Blackpool and Foo Fighters in MK.

That one of the rescheduled gigs? Caught them in York, was pleasantly surprised by them despite not being familiar with anything beyond the 2nd album. Certainly felt amongst the oldest in the crowd :)

Never seen Muse (another band I used to quite like back in the day), but from all accounts they put on a very decent show.

Tickets dispatched today for The Rifles next month. A very cult, under the radar band despite being on album No.5 this year and with a decade of touring behind them. Urge anyone to check them out if they play near you. Especially if you're a fan of modish Jam esque stuff (think their name derives from Eton Rifles, but don't quote me on that)

Seems you will have your wish - Muse, Radiohead and Coldplay I am hearing - Coldplay obv now 100%.
A slightly less confirmed source suggesting Bring me the Horizon and Prodigy to close Other stage on Sunday - would be epic.

Is that trio not a tad too similar (in genre more than anything) for Glasto? They usually mix it up a bit more than that.

Would very much like to catch Radiohead one day.

Only thing I would say is they have all done it before - which is rare.
I would say history shows they all can be very similar - enough other stages to mix it up.  Looks like no big US rap act this year, Foo's not looking like they going to return after last years cancellation, Adele seems nailed for next year not sure how far away from that "type" they can get this year.
Half the fun is in the speculation - as soon as the programme goes to print it will leak anyway.

More than a little underwhelmed at the headliners for Bingley festival this year (Travis, Tinie Tempah, Echo ATB, Sigma), especially given it's their 10 year anniversary. Glad I didn't stump up for a weekend ticket before any acts were announced.

The View are going on tour and coming to York in April, so that pleases me :) stonking debut album back in the day.

I didn't see anyone older than me (39) for The Kooks....looked like all students, didn't care though.

Just purchased a ticket for Jake Bugg on March 8th in London at the Tufnell Park Dome.  General sale is Weds I believe.....looking forward to this one.  Last train back to Notts is 23:30, gig finishes at 11pm....odds anyone?

Kentish town area to Kings Cross hmmm.

I've kinda half seen them. They played BST @ Hyde Park in 2014, but instead of being the last band on before The Libertines on the main stage, some muppet decided to have them 'headline' the 2nd stage thing....and by stage I mean table, totally exposed to the open air so the sound was crap unless you were right at the front. And to make it worse, the timings meant it overlapped with The Libertines. Great work, whoever planned that.

So because of that, looking forward to seeing them in a better environment and not having to leave after 7 songs.

Babyshambles were class live, when Pete wasn't getting locked up 2 hours before the doors opened :)

Going to see The Rifles this weekend in Notts. Milburn in Sheffield on the 30th April. Are the only gigs I currently have booked.

Would love the White Lies to tour, but doesn't look likely atm. Same with Jamie T.

As for festivals;

I done Ultra Music festival last year in Croatia, was absolutely unbelievable if you're into EDM and the like. Contemplating doing it again this year. We had an apartment and had a holiday either side of it also, worked really well.

As for UK fests, I don't think I can deal with the camping like I could 5/6 years ago, but inclined to pick up a few day passes to maybe Reading/Leeds and SW4. I'll also be grabbing a ticket for EDC as it seems stupid not to, 5 miles away and an extremely good line up!

Ah Milburn, that brings back memories :) Seen The Rifles before? They put on a good show. I dunno why but I have a feeling White Lies might announce something later this year to coincide with the upcoming new album.....or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel like I've got out of jail....after posting this on the first page ''One that got away.....The Coral in Leeds; hesitated and it sold out'', they are doing a one off gig in York in May, result :)

Nope - I was hoping/thinking the same thing, but can also see them doing a huge tour in 2017. Either way, not too long.

Yeah I think you're right. They don't appear on any festival bills this summer, so chuck the album out later this year then tour the shit out of it in 2017, and headline a few festivals to boot.

Well, really enjoyed Jake Bugg in North London on Tuesday.  Really surprised by the venue, was like my local village hall, small intimate and a damn good show was put on.

He played 20 odd songs and was really good being up close, I could almost touch the drum kit if I lent forward too much!

Would go again, added bonus was Tufnell Park tube station has now re opened.....30 yards from the venue so super convenient.

Was it a secret gig or something? He's been added to the line up of Inmusic festival in Croatia, quite the line up for a 40Euro, 3 day ticket.

Gig #2 for me tomorrow, The Rifles playing the Wardrobe in Leeds. Can't say its a venue I'm familiar with!

Was worth the trip down from Notts for the evening.

Placebo announce a world tour (though only European dates confirmed at the moment). They are playing the First Direct Arena in Leeds, its 25 minutes on the train from York....so that's absolutely no fun whatsoever and far too convenient. Never been to Croatia so gonna head to Zagreb to see them instead. I'll be at Silver status on the BA executive club scheme by then, so free lounge access to offset having to fly from London for direct flights. Hard life.

Kaiser Chiefs confirmed as the Friday act at the July race meeting in York (It's The Corrs on the Saturday, such a shame that clashes with Manics/Editors in Leeds ;) ). I don't mind them, certainly wouldn't cough up £30+ to see them, but it will be about a tenner (or less!) to get in on the cheap side, so can't really argue against paying £10 for a day of horses followed by Kaiser Chiefs.

Fibbers in York attracting a reasonable calibre of band; The View, Coral and now Ash all playing there in the coming months. It's 2 minutes from where I live so very convenient.

I know Shed Seven's tour manager/Rick Witter's agent (this would've been thin in 1997, its even thinner now) and he tells me they are playing a festival warm up show also at Fibbers, it's who you know not what you know. Not been announced yet but 8 tickets reserved without the mad scramble when they go on sale ;)

Anyone manage to get a Radiohead ticket? Found Thom Yorke's comments about the situation a tad hollow....

Fibbers brings back some memories. Crazy Chapman family performance there. Some  of their regulars viewers were an eye opener. It was a bit different seeing his fake hanging/red wine dripping stunt from about half a yard. Really small venue but I liked it a lot. Not sure if I'm preaching to the converted.

When was the last time you went?

I only ask cos it is located elsewhere in York now. It used to be by all the bus stops (Stonebow, a really ugly building!) but the future of that building was unclear so they moved a couple years ago to the other side of the river. It's much more modern these days, though it does lack the 'rustic charm' of the old Fibbers. Its bigger as well, and has a strip club next door.......I'm told.

The Enemy are splitting up and play a 'farewell' tour this autumn. My flatmate got us tickets on O2 priority for the Leeds leg. Odds on them back in the studio/touring within the next 5 years? Very good band actually, shame to see them pack it in. I fear quite a few bands from that 2004-2009 era might start jacking it in soon. Music industry is a different ball game these days to when they all broke through (which is what Tom Clark touched on in his statement about the split)

Maximo Park are playing a hometown show in Newcastle. Album No.6 is in the pipeline apparently. Another good band and excellent live, however I don't fancy paying £35 for it.

Saw The View at a local venue on Monday. Capacity is probably 750 or so. Can't have been more than 250 there. I don't think they'll be heading to York again anytime soon :)

Saw Muse at the O2 last Monday and enjoyed it although it didn't draw me in unlike other gigs I have been to recently.

Not a fan of the venue which is probably why, and also was in the seats instead of the standing area.

Anyone heard of or been to Godiva festival in Coventry?

Been going for years apparently, never even heard of it, just popped up on my FB recently. It's a free festival! This year it has, amongst others, The Charlatans, The Subways, Mystery Jets and Pigeon Detectives.

First weekend in July, see what work say when I request yet another weekend off ;)

Never heard of it but got to be worth a look if it's free!

I've only just seen this thread. I'm surprised the subways are still going; I saw them back in 2006 I think supporting the foo fighters in Manchester. I was pretty impressed with them but they seemed to go off the radar fairly quickly.

I've only just seen this thread. I'm surprised the subways are still going; I saw them back in 2006 I think supporting the foo fighters in Manchester. I was pretty impressed with them but they seemed to go off the radar fairly quickly.

I think the end is nigh for them. They are touring the States at the moment, but had to shift a lot of gear and merchandise to fund it. I think their last album was self produced, never a great sign. Saw them at Brudenell (sp?) Social Club in Leeds about this time last year and they put on a good show. Lead singer Billy did an acoustic set at a venue in York in October, and honestly I wouldn't have begrudged him, after walking on stage and seeing about the 30 people who turned up, turning round thinking 'fuck this!'

I worry for the future of some of my fave bands of that era; The Enemy have already called it a day, Maximo Park, Editors, The View etc have all had declining record sales in recent years. Bands can get so much exposure/notoriety on the back of FB/Youtube these days that they don't even need a record label to land tours and festival slots. The Sherlocks being a case in point.

There is always the lucrative reunion tour in 2025 :)

It's pretty worrying for indie music overall compared to where it was at 10 years back. There seems to be such a decline in number of bands, quality of those bands etc. 10 years ago you had acts such arctic monkeys and kasabian, before that the libertines and oasis etc. Since then who's new on the scene that can be seen as a huge headline act? I'm intrigued to see how the line up these festivals will look in the next decade. They can't keep asking biffy clyro/ muse/ red hot chilly peppers etc .

Subways - quite an interesting band.  Signed a single album deal with Mushroom that led to a single album deal with Warner for big money and a huge funded tour (around 06).  Lead Singer (Billy) had some addiction problems that led to him quitting the business and enrolling in an English degree.  He is now very clean and they have produced 2 more albums through things like crowd funding.  Believe they are currently in America on a tour funded completely on a crowd funding concept.  Although albums 3 and 4 did not have the commercial success of 1 & 2 as you would expect they shifted very good numbers for independent releases, and have some great tunes on.  There live performances have lost the anarchic edge they had in the early days, think Billy has stopped leaping of speaker stacks and balconies, but they are one of tightest bands out there and with a catalogue of music that can fill a full 90 minute slot.

Billy is a very bright cookie, and is very vocal about the "sins" of the music industry, he is a very good follow on Twitter if you like that kind of stuff.

Good week on a purely selfish level for myself :) Manics in Leeds on Friday supported by Editors, and The Coral in York on Saturday.

Fratellis are touring Costello Music later this year for its 10th anniversary. As if its a decade old already!

Forgotten Fields has been cancelled this summer, Suede amongst others were due to headline. Simply too many festivals doing the rounds over summer?

Worked in Coventry for several years and was involved in booking one of the stages for a few years.

Good festival and great that it is all for free. Everyone in Cov looks forward to it every year a lot. Recommended!

Yeah sadly I have to work that weekend now otherwise it was a goer. Some great bands on the bill for a free festival, one I'll keep my eye on for next year now that I'm aware of it :)

Who have played there in recent years out of interest? Couldn't see much online about line ups in recent history.

Manics on for almost 2 hours tonight, what a back catalogue. If I'm honest I was a tad disappointed by Editors set list (only 1 song from Back Room and 1 from An End Has A Start) but they were still class. Seeing them again in 3 weeks in Eindhoven so looking forward to that.

Bit pissed :)

Probably the best place is here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godiva_Festival#2016

It is kind of varied, sometimes they have more current artists and sometimes they have people touring on their old hits (*ahem* Fun Lovin Criminals) - One year I got to hang out with Phil Oakey from the Human League back stage for a while, nice bloke! So that was my highlight...

I was a massive Manics fan 1993-1995 era, so always have mixed feelings seeing them now, though I've seen then several times as a threepiece. Such a unique band, I feel like I can forgive them for the occasional dud song and duff album. Sounds like a great combo with Editors though, they've really come along way since I saw them place as Snowfield on the Birmingham pub circuit!

What band/singer would you most like to see in concert that you haven't seen?

Mine would be Bowie and The Clash. Both now sadly impossible. Bowie was supposed to play at Roskilde festival the year I went in about 2004, but had to pull out with illness, that was the closest I got. I did get to see Strummer with the Mescaleros which was a great night, but of course I was secretly hoping Mick Jones would come on at the end for an encore...

That's a good question.....I was quite into the grunge scene in my formative years so to see Nirvana at the peak of their powers would've been pretty special I imagine. Being 7 when Kurt blew his head off kinda made that impossible :) Also never seen Oasis. I wouldn't say I was huge fan of theirs, but I do like plenty of their stuff and being a City fan makes it feel like I should catch them at some point. Rumours are circulating of a reunion next year....

First time I'd seen MSP so nothing to compare it against, but was very impressed indeed. Sounded great and had bags of energy. Slight disappointment with the Editors (not the band but the set list), but I'm comparing a 45 minute support slot vs seeing them at the O2 last October where they absolutely owned the place and had the crowd in the palm of their hands, so maybe I'm being a tad unfair.

Acoustic version of Ocean Spray was probably the highlight, wasn't sure he'd/they'd play it due to its subject matter but very glad they did. No Suicide Is Painless, but will let that slide ;)

Another band from that mid 00s era are packing it in.

Sunshine Underground are releasing one last album and then going on a farewell tour in October before knocking it on the head. Never made it quite as big as some of their counterparts but they have a few decent songs.

Kula Shaker touring the 20th anniversary of their debut album. These anniversary tours need to stop, cos all they are is a constant reminder of how old I'm getting! :)

One of my favourite things about Glasto is sitting around on the Wednesday with your highlighter working out all the bands that you are going to see/miss.
Now the set times are already released and sites like Clashfinder make the highlighting electronic, you can even set up alerts to remind you which bands are coming on when and all this can be done 3/4 weeks before the festival.  The long and short of it is, all in all, its an amazing line up for me but its all going to be so late, will my old bones make it?

With both Saturday and Friday nights seeing must see sets at 5am and 6am its going to be a long old weekend.

Stupidly excited to see Bring me the Horizon again, along with Mercury Rev, Adele (don't tell anyone), Earth Wind and Fire, Underworld, Polly Harvey and loads more, but its all about the DJ's this year, Andy C, Hype and Friction, Shy FX, Roni Size about 3 times and Craig Charles to get my funk on, really am getting super excited.

Before all that we have AC/DC with Axel Rose this weekend and a couple of warm up gigs before the festi but the countdown is on, now if only it would stop bloody raining.

3 and a half hours?! That's pretty damn good value for money, though I'm guessing the ticket wasn't on the budget end of the spectrum :)

Editors and The View have recently been confirmed for Glasto, I think Adele would be pretty cool to see live (I wouldn't pay to see her as such but if she was doing a festival I might pop along if it didn't clash with someone good).

Just over 2 weeks until Best Kept Secret in Eindhoven for me, then they come thick and fast in July with Shed Seven, Ash, Ocean Colour Scene w/ Sheds, View and Bluetones and also Kaiser Chiefs playing York races.

August is looking empty as it stands :(

Axl Rose was incredible on Saturday with AC/DC.  Anyone who was umming and arring about GnR tickets next summer don't - the boy still got it.

He worked really well with Angus (who really is the GOAT). The little nods to Axl were great, red topped microphone, white leather jacket and tartan kilt for the encore.  Was great to see a really different AC/DC set as well, played loads of early stuff I had never seen them play live before and to see a rendition of Touch Too Much was well and truly worth it.

(As an aside Slash tweeting a pic of him and Duff in the crowd on Saturday and then your Mrs who has been a bit a Slash stalker in the past realises she is in said photo has been a source of much fun to myself and  friends . . . Call yourself a stalker and you don't even recognise him when you are almost touching each other, bless her she is not amused).

Olympic Stadium worked excellently as a venue, understand there was some trouble coming out as Police seemed to get the queues badly wrong for the station coming out of Westfield, but that aside well organised, loads of toilets, bars, beer sellers, no queues.  Could smoke on the pitch and the sound was brilliant.  West Ham have got a bargain, locals in the pubs suggesting they have sold 55 thousand + season tickets going to be one hell of a place to watch a game, seems far more intimate then Emirates and Wembley.  Would be happy to see more gigs there as well.

Have folded and bought a ticket for Field Day festival on Sunday to see the Avalanches - hope its as good as last weekend.

Tonji, love Femi Kuti always a guaranteed quality show, have fun.

Email arrived yesterday to say Ticket had been dispatched.  Should have said tickets.  Email only one reference number.
See tickets were little help to be honest, couldn't explain why, did confirm ticket in wife name/number had been purchased.
Both tickets were paid for in one transaction, but system might be treating it as two transactions . . . . agghhhhh

Wife receives email this morning to say her ticket has been dispatched.

My daughter has been there since Saturday. The Oxfam Stewards camp just outside the fence, near Windinglake Farm. They have puddles so deep that ducks have taken up residence.
Forecast from here in looks a lot better though.

Only managed to catch a few bits & pieces from Glastonbury.

Particularly enjoyed Mercury Rev, P J Harvey & New Order, but they are my era & rarely disappoint.

New to me Tame Impala, pretty good, 70s influenced soft rock.

Surprisingly entertained by both headline acts Adele & Coldplay, not my sorta thing generally, but they both worked the crowd & looked to have fun.

Glasto was brilliant.  Maybe having a year off was what I needed, but I didn't want to leave and that has not happened for some years.

It was muddy, maybe as bad as 97, but the weather was actually very good, a shower on Wednesday and Friday morning's and then little until Sunday lunch time.  The amount of water on site prior to opening was the issue and they actually would have cancelled if they had had 5mm more on the Monday before (according to Billy Bragg).

The vote made Friday really weird - we went to bed Thursday night expecting in and blazing sunshine all weekend, we woke upto out and a forecast of continuous rain.  The vote did have an effect as nearly every artist mentioned it, and the place seemed in real shock on Friday.

Musically, Adele and ELO were the surprises of the weekend.  Adele I was expecting to leave after 3 songs, but I stayed.  She was engaging and she has a great voice, just a shame about the songs.  Rolling in Deep was amazing crowd participation possibly the best I have ever seen.  ELO, who knew.  What a band, tight and on the money with some difficult string arrangements. I was surprised that I knew maybe 11 from 15 odd songs - and that boy can play guitar, a band that always rather passed me by, so very pleased to see them.

Personal choices of the weekend were Underworld and Bring Me The Horizon.  Underworld is a difficult act to pull off at a festival, huge (electronic) instrumental breaks, 1 guy twiddling knobs never an easy sell, but the music hooks people in.  They played all the classics including Rez, which may be the best rush I have ever had, what a tune.  Bring me The Horizon, is an off the wall booking for Glasto and the "Other Stage" is never the best venue for a band that might be a bit marmite as the sound is so poor and wind effected massively.  However after a nervous start they settled down quickly and played a great cross section of the back catalogue.  The crowd steadily grew through the set and they ended playing to a huge crowd.  Glasto needs metal and BMTH supplied it with youthful exuberance.

Madness, Paul Heaton, Craig Charles, James, Roni Size all need special mentions.  ZZ Top, Jess Glinn (SP?) and the DJ Power Ballard battle I was dragged too not so much.

Night time is where its at at Glasto, it really is a 24 hour thing these days, and the split with Arcadia and the Dance Area vs Shangra La (Naughty Corner) is much better.  Arcadia was immense for a DnB head like myself and it was great to see so many of the big DJ's perform but please stop with this "only playing tunes from my label".  Carl Cox, Andy C and Hype had massive platforms to get there music to new audiences to celebrate their genre's history but the treated it like a Friday night in "Trade".  Then someone like Ellis Dee comes on at 3 in the morning and blows them all away.

Lots of forthcoming gigs starting with Latitude in a fortnight - Glasto 17 practice as I am taking both girls.  I must be mad.

How old are the girls?

Swift edit for fear of my question being misinterpreted:)

It was genuine curiosity related to how much they might find to enjoy.

We took my granddaughter to Wychwood for the first time when she was eight, since then all the grandkids have been. They love the 'being there' but the music kind of passes them by.
Wychwood is tiny compared to Latitude, and minuscule compared to Glastonbury.
Be interested to hear how it goes.

Its something we agonize over. Took eldest to Latitude last year and it worked out very well, we were lucky with weather and the kids area kept her entertained well enough. Leaving them with Grandparents for Glasto was tough (for us not the kids who had a fine time eating chocolate and ice cream it seems) and they are far too aware to split.  Latitude is only and hour away and I have friends in the village and we are going with others with kids, so its a very easy option its just a camping holiday.  Glasto a different story.

Mrs is very keen that they go to worthy farm as kids.  She also thinks it likely next year will be the last. After the Longleat experiment in 18 it is possible so that leaves next year.  My gut reaction is too soon, its doable I prefer the idea of camping in the village and busing in each day, family camping in anything but a perfect weather year is a big ask the thought of dragging a cart/pushchair round site in mud is very scary.

Great write up.

My God you're brave to even consider Glastonbury with children that young. Maybe you could hire a Nanny for the trip?

Snagged my White Lies ticket this morning, and also snapped up a ticket for Cast at the back end of the year in 'ull.

Really hope no more bands I like announce stuff, pretty sure Nationwide would like me out of my overdraft at some point this year :)

Shed Seven are like Tikay or a fine wine, just get better with age. A great gig for a great cause, with 5 figures raised for homelessness charities in York.

Only just rolled out of bed, sore head :) need to sort Feeder tickets, I'll be in trouble with my flatmate if they've sold out and we've missed the boat cos I was too hungover to get up ;)

Seen The Rifles 4 times, very tight live band, would recommend catching them if you get the chance.

Is it true that Stone Roses don't allow anyone other than Shane Meadows to film them/their performances?

I've seen various comments from people (some I know, some I don't) ripping into their set at TITP this weekend. I know they have a dubious rep as a live band but this sounds like it was really poor.

Took a half an hour train to Godiva Festival in Coventry from MK last Sunday, very much recommend it to others next year.

It's the countries biggest FREE musical festival and gets a very good turn out. 120k over the 3 days.

Milburn who I follow very closely played along with the Pigeon detectives on the Sunday, with Scouting for Girls headlining (what a way to ruin it!) and some really good supporting stages.

The likes of The Charlatans and The Subways on the Saturday also. All in all a very good festival and set up.

It's certainly on my radar for next summer, sadly by the time I'd noticed it this year it would've been too complicated to sort with work. If it gets a line up as decent as this year then I think we'll make a weekend of it in Coventry 2017.

I assume the acts aren't playing for free so are their costs covered just from food and drink sales alone? Council chuck a few quid their way?

Wychwood is tiny compared to Latitude, and minuscule compared to Glastonbury.
Be interested to hear how it goes.

So won't be taking the girls to Glasto next year without a camper van seems to be the consensus.

Latitude was great, weather helped massively (it was almost too hot) and the girls behaved well and got a lot out of the whole experience.  As you say Latitude is miniscule compared with Glasto and the big realisation was the walking, car trips etc would be far too much in general population or family camping at Glasto.

Latitude - quote of the weekend was from a un-named girl in the kids theatre tent - it was book at bedtime and the story teller was asking the gathered children if they had ever lost a toy (was relative to the story).  The little girl replied she had and the story teller asked if it was at the Festival and the little girl replied "No coming home from LA last weekend" - the story tellers face was a picture.

Moans at the family camping security check around having to decant the Champers out of glass bottles were also very common as they have been every year I have attended - makes me laugh, JD tastes the same from plastic bottles I find.

Latitude is almost perfect for what it is and the organisation is top draw.  The sound quality on all the stages is brilliant, the change overs are quick, they run to timetable, the bars are plentiful and well staffed, the food choices are huge and very well priced in the main.  The Comedy, Poetry, Cabaret and Literature line ups read like who's who of their fields it just lacks decent music depth.  Now I am sure this is to appeal to a certain sort of patron but £205 a ticket I expect a little more depth of talent on the music front.

That being said the kids activities are brilliant, ranging from giant sand pits, to pond dipping, model making, whittling, carpentry, theatre groups (cast members of Wicked and Joseph taking the groups), fire shows, circus training and bubbles and that lot barely scratches the surface.  My two loved it, they woke each day eager to get to it, and fell asleep exhausted each night - perfect.

Of the music I saw Soulwax were the stand out set.  The new set up playing live Dance Music, 3 drummers, guitarist, 2 DJ's and a percussion section, was mind blowing as they grow as a band it could be very special.  Slaves were brilliant and got the crowd going as did Rat Boy.  After that I was into a crop of bands that were not my thing - Beruit will be investigated further and Christine and the Queens were fabulous darlings, the rest were a bit fluffy for my liking, but that's not really what the weekend was about.

As you get older you/I have listened to less new music and you become set in your ways and I can be thankful that latitude opened my eyes to what is out there, just wish I liked more of it.

Sounds like Latitude did 'Exactly what it says on the tin', it's Oxfam stewarded and always fills up very quickly. Might put it on my to do list for next year.

A note about using the camper van field at Glastonbury. I have stewarded the Ped Gate (D?) on a number of occasions and the queues do build up at busy times, especially when it is raining. But that entrance does have the advantage of being close to the Kids' Field and to a lot of the family fun areas. It has the disadvantage of being outside the fence and thus a lot further from stuff like the JP stage the Dance area and the Park.
For a family though, I would say it wins out big style vs being in the Family Camping area.

Great write up as usual Nakor, thanks.

Have to say, as an old timer, campervan/caravan is the way to go.  Bought a caravan specifically for Download a few years ago and it made a huge difference.  No carrying tents for miles, then going back for kit plus the return journey.  Has a fridge to keep beers and bacon cold, cupboards to put things in.  Best of all, when it's pissing it down you can go straight back, pop on the gas fire to warm up and get changed.  Lovely!

I don't want to get old . . . . but the reality is I am and if I am going to take the girls to these things then it seems to be the only choice.
As David states the Camper field is a way from the main site at Glasto but I think the benefits you outline far outweigh all that (ummm Bacon).

Anyway you are far too tall to attend festivals, you should be made to sit in a chair at the back ;)

One of the nice things about Download's campervan field is that it has it's own entrance to the main arena, didn't have to walk far at all.   I think our daughter would love a festival and I'd love to taker her but I'd need another caravan before going again, no way I can go back.  She'll be too old to go with me by the time I get around to it, perhaps with her mates one day.

Oh and I sit in the middle, on my camping chair, with my cool box :D

(only joking, just to clear that up)

Pixies tickets secured for the O2 Academy Leeds in November.

Will be great to see them in a smaller venue (c2,300 capacity).

Saw Belly perform after a 21 year hiatus on Saturday.  Made me realise that they'd been missed over that time.  They played a couple of new tracks too, both of which sounded as good as the old stuff.

Grrr it clashes with White Lies at the uni that same night, marv scheduling. Love the academy in Leeds as well, great venue. Might look at their Newcastle and Manchester dates but I have to work on Friday morning and I can't imagine the tickets lasting long.

Busy few days lined up for me; Kaiser Chiefs at York races on Friday, Bluetones, Shed Seven and OCS in Leeds on Saturday (The View have pulled out sadly, lead singer in rehab in Thailand, been replaced by a local band) and Ash in York on Tuesday.

Also got tickets for the 2nd annual Yorfest held on the racecourse in September, headlined by Lightning Seeds and a personal favourite, The Rifles. 20 nicker to get drunk on a field all day :)

The Maccabees have called it a day, and are due to announce a few farewell shows. Never really got into them much despite liking some of their stuff. My flatmate is a big fan so no doubt he'll guilt trip my arse into going if they play somewhere local ish. Coral and Super Furry Animals both heading out on tour but have seen both fairly recently so probably a swerve.

Recent gigs all excellent. Very impressed by The Bluetones. Shed Seven as great as always and were much better than OCS in Leeds (I might be a tad biased ;) ). Ash brilliant despite a few sound problems, forget how good their back catalogue is. Excited to see them perform 1977 in full later this year.

August is a slow month but things pick up in late September for me, a flurry of gigs to see the year out, got at least 8 (Yorfest, The Enemy, Fratellis, Ash, White Lies, Cast, Feeder, Shed Seven) from 24th September through to December.

Enjoy whatever shows you people go to see :)

Yeah announced on their FB page earlier today, bit out of the blue! Will keep my eyes peeled for farewell dates as well.

I said in an earlier post but I do worry for some of these guitar bands that broke through in the mid '00s; The Enemy are going as are the Maccabees now, how long before others like Maximo Park, Editors, The Rifles, The View, Pigeon Detectives etc call it a day? They are all 4/5 albums in now and the music industry is a hell of a lot different now compared to 2004/5/6.

Surely it was always this way? The Easybeats, Herman's Hermits, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Amen Corner, Love Affair, Cream, Jethro Tull, Mott the Hoople, The Police, The Stone Roses (yes I know they came back, but the point is still valid), Oasis, The Smiths. Why should your list be immune to the issues that cause bands to burn and die, or just simply fade away.

Being billed as 'one night only'....James and The Charlatans playing at the Echo arena in Liverpool in December. 2 great bands, but at 50 quid a ticket its not a cheap night. Probably would've gone if it was my side of the country but Liverpool isn't convenient enough to make the journey. Great for anyone based in the north west area though (if you like that kinda music)

Kaiser Chiefs heading out on an arena tour early next year. Don't think I like them enough to cough up :)

Coming out of festival season and into touring season, plenty of acts going on the road. RHCP, Courteeners, Biffy Clyro, Bastille, Pigeon Detectives....

Anyone stump up the £77 asking price for standing tickets to see the Chili's? As good as they are (though personally I've gone off them in recent years), that's a hell of a sum to have to cough up for a gig, and that's before any postage fees.

I'll stick to paying £15 to see Pigeon Detectives in Leeds :)

Yeah, its about as popular a decision as Sainsburys changing their lunchtime meal deal offering. Can't help but feel this story has more legs yet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Another band bites the dust; Augustines. Don't really know their stuff but they played in York a few months ago so know of them. Financial decision apparently, and follows closely in the footsteps of The Maccabees calling it a day (they said in a recent interview that they couldn't afford to live in London despite having a No1 album, though don't think their split was money related)

http://www.nme.com/news/we-are-augustines/96214

Begs the question, just how much money is in music in this day and age? Obviously millions if you're Adele/Coldplay/Muse/Calvin Harris etc but how much filters down to the less commercially successful bands and artists? It seems record and tour sales simply aren't enough anymore and requires more branching out into other aspects of the industry like writing for other acts and producing. James from The Coral was behind Blossoms debut No1 album and I bet that has made him more cash than anything his band have done recently!

Carl Cox's last 10 tunes at Space after a 9 hour set.  A couple of real bangers in there.

Hated and loved Space in equal measure.  Loved the venue, the daytime vibe, and it was a bit faster when I used to attend, but was always a little too glam for me. It really is the end of an era.

Saw Pigeon Detectives on Thursday, Feeder tonight, then a slight lull until Shed Seven in Leicester next month (though I am in Thailand for the last 2 weeks of this month :) )

Two tickets booked for Iron Maiden in Nottingham next May.
My 11 year old, Joe is going to lose his mind when he finds out, but trying to keep them secret till his birthday in April.

Also, saw Ugly Kid Joe for the second time in 12 months at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham last Friday. Absolutely brilliant show as always. Hope they're still gigging three years so I can take Joe to see them. Play 14+ shows at the moment so I can't get him there.

I was 9 when my Dad took me to my first arena gig.  I am sure your little man will never forget it either.  Have fun.

Already had him at the O2 in Birmingham for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, and also Extreme touring Pornograffiti. His favourite so far though was Slash and Myles at Nottingham arena last year. Maiden will eclipse that though I'm sure.

I was at that Slash/Myles gig was a great night.  Sounds like his education is coming on nicely.

Just seem Martha and the Vandellas are coming to Norwich - another one to the list.

Fancy that being this years Birthday outing Boo?  18 December, tis a Sunday. - Christmas due to end that day for me so should be doable.

Sad news about Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill passing away today. 44 years old is no age to go.

Only seen them once, supporting Shed Seven on their winter tour last year; have never seen a sizeable place (o2 Academy) so rammed for a support act. They were a great warm up for SS and had the place bouncing.

2016, no more please.

Looking ahead to next year...

Flatmate really wants to see one of the 3 Maccabees farewell shows but I'm not as eager as him.
Stone Roses adding 2 dates in Leeds is more than tempting despite their awful rep as a live band.
Charlatans are playing in Scarbados.
Awaiting the details for the Shed Seven winter 2017 tour, should be revealed in January.
Live In Leeds has White Lies (they were class last week) and Pigeon Detectives amongst many others and that could be a goer.

As it stands, the only thing booked is The Rifles unplugged when they swing by York in May. Eyes peeled and credit card at the ready for more though....

Certainly looking to go to The Rifles and White Lies next year.

Saw The Fratellis last night at the o2 in Leeds. To say it was the most underwhelmed I've ever been at a gig wouldn't be an exaggeration. Zero audience chat/banter/participation, no introduction for any songs, very lacklustre performance of Costello Music with lyrics constantly missing. Very much appeared to be going through the motions and was quite happy when it finished.

They then post a message on their FB page earlier informing that tonight and tomorrow in London have been rescheduled for February as John Fratelli has been advised to rest his throat issue for 48 hours.

So it explains the run of the mill performance, but then makes me question why the gig even went ahead with the obvious voice problems.

Someone did smuggle in a flare :) that was a gig first for me!

If you view it as just seeing The Killers then yes, but if you're into other bands on the bill (White Lies, Elbow and someone else with more TBC?) then its pretty good value I think.

I went to one of the BST days in 2014 when The Libertines headlined, other acts that afternoon/evening included The Enemy, Maximo Park, The View, The Rifles, Pogues and Rev and the Makers. It was only £55 for the ticket which I thought was excellent value, but I loved most of the bands playing so got good mileage for the price.

Good bump btw :) slow start for me so far this year. At an acoustic show tomorrow night for Independent Venue Week. Tickets for Feeder go on sale tomorrow and they are playing York which is good. Line up for Kendal Calling was announced tonight for this year and it looks rather good but I fear I'm too old/miserable for festivals.

What are people eyeing up this year? The festivals are slowly revealing their headliners....

Title: Re: Gigs/festivals 2017

Is that for the BST festival? If so seems fairly reasonable for Killers, Elbow, Tears for Fears and White Lies.

You'd get to see a few more artists with a comparatively priced day ticket to any other festival but it'd be much tougher to get to than central london

I'd agree that its pretty steep if Killers are the only act that you're interested in though

Recent U2 debacle would have made you shudder if you think £67 is a lot

Tried to get standing tickets for Twickenham, £87.50 each.  Obviously being Ticketmaster, they "sold out" straight away.  Get Me In had them available though (owned by Ticketmaster) at only £187, plus booking fee of course.   The only seated tickets left in the stadium were about £200 and were right at the side of the stage.  This was all within about two minutes of the tickets coming on line.

Needless to say, I'm not seeing U2 in the summer.

Finding myself in London (via Santorini and Athens....) on the weekend of 26/27th August, which just happens to be the weekend of Victorious festival in Portsmouth....the line up was announced today and its Stereophonics, Feeder and Jake Bugg (amongst others with more TBC) on the Saturday 26th, so felt rude not to go whilst (kinda) being in the vicinity. £32 for the day ticket was a no brainer really.

They were good at York races last summer. This year we have Olly Murs and Jess Glynne, marv. Shall give it a wide berth methinks.

So much stuff getting announced that is very tempting (Libertines at Tramlines, Maximo Park added to Live At Leeds, Y Not festival etc is just scratching the surface), but a definite is The Cranberries heading to York for an acoustic greatest hits show, with a string quartet no less. Not everyone's cup of tea but its rare for us to get such a global band playing in our little city. It also happens to be the night before I head to Vegas so perfect timing :)

What festivals, if any, are people eyeing up this year? So much choice its unreal....

Yeah saw that on Facebook, down in Oxford or somewhere is it? Bit too far for me but a great line up for my tastes. Must admit it's not a festival I'd heard of, yet this is their 20th anniversary year, head in the sand if its south of Bingley and all that.

Yeh, its in Oxford. 6 of us heading up from Brighton. We'd never heard of it before either but it looks excellent and has had some decent lineups through the years. I'm a fan of pretty much all of those bands so hopefully we'll get some fair whether and have a cracking weekend.

Bit of a scramble this morning but just secured tickets for Shed Seven's winter tour supported by Cast. Wanted 2 standing for Hull, ticketweb weren't selling any, and gigsandtours and seetickets would only let me buy one at a time, not ideal but no bother....only when I came to pay on seetickets my basket was empty, went to do the process again and now they'd sold out of standing tickets.

So had to kick on on G&T website, just about made 2 separate purchases before they also disappeared off there. Sadly this also meant paying 2 sets of postage, and the only option was recorded delivery at £6.50 a pop, marv. Expensive morning :)

Now just gotta wait 10 months for the gig.

Bingley festival have finally announced an act (no need to plural yet), with the Manics headlining the Friday night. Otherwise they are keeping their cards close to their chest. £60 for a weekend though so myself and a couple friends debating just to take the plunge on the strength of MSP as previous line ups have been solid to excellent (2015 was a particular highlight with James, Cast, Ash, Idlewild, Embrace, SFA)

The line up for V has taken a hammering but I guess they are probably heading in a different direction. Leeds/Reading doesn't inspire me either. Thinking the 'lesser' festivals like Kendal Calling, Y Not, Victorious, Bingley are really closing the gap on the big boys these days, plus some excellent value festivals on the continent make flying to Europe a feasible alternative to camping in a field in Yorkshire.

Roddy Womble of Idlewild fame is playing in York a week on Sunday, which is conveniently just after I return from holiday so will try and blag a ticket on the door.

Just seen Kasabian at the sydney opera house. It's safe to say they've not lost their touch. Unbelievable acoustics inside, which definitely made up for being in an all seated venue. I'm pretty sure my trip home back to the UK will be coinciding with Leeds festival as well so potentially a good chance to see them again!

Definitely agree about some of the smaller uk festivals, 100% catching up to some of the largest festivals around in the country in terms of artists playing. When you consider tickets for something like Y Not is half the price of reading/leeds it really makes you wonder...

What was the damage for a ticket out of interest? 3 figures including booking fee?

Annoyingly Ash are only supporting Weezer in London, had it been for all UK dates then I'd have snapped up a ticket for Leeds this morning. I like Weezer but probably not enough to cough up, but Ash would've sweetened the deal considerably, nevermind.

Just going back a bit. I'm shocked that in 2017 a Shed Seven concert sold out 10 months before the date. I'm also very surprised that Cast are supporting as I always remembered them to be the bigger band. I guess Shed 7 are more popular than I thought! To be fair, I was never a fan, but they can write a good chorus for sure...

I guess the Britpop revival business is really kicking up a notch these days...

Now were talking :)

You need to pluralise concert ;) they have 13 sold out dates so far for the November/December tour, including the 5000 capacity O2 Brixton academy, plus other staple cities like Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Sheffield. This is their biggest tour in their 25 year career, despite no new material in 16 years (this is of course changing in the autumn with the release of the new album). Some of the dates went extremely quickly and if you weren't on the ball the tickets had gone within an hour. You could easy argue in 1996 that Cast were the bigger band, but fast forward to 2017 and Shed Seven are the bigger draw quite comfortably.

Having Cast supporting really is a fantastic sweetener though; you pay £24 to have a sing song for 3 hours whilst enjoying a few beers...basically being transported back to the mid 90s for an evening! Me and the missus are heading over to Ireland for the Dublin leg, then seeing them in Hull. Will be my 11th and 12th time seeing the full band, I need to get a life haha

Absolutely blown away by London Grammar at glasto, never realised just how incred that girls voice is! Spine tingling stuff.

Barry Gibb was brilliant. Radiohead and Foos too as expected.

Honourable mention to Temples who had a bit of a scheduling stinker clashing with Liam Gallagher, Katy Perry and Wilkinson. Deserved a bigger crowd imo but still put in a great performance

Royal Blood were the only disappointment of the weekend. Never really got the crowd going at all but all in all a great weekend. Finally managed a welly-free festival!

Oh I like your review of Royal Blood, due to a hectic Thursday night I took a late siesta on Friday and accidently missed Royal Blood, and have been informed ever since how amazing they were, so you have made me feel a little better at least.

Temples also had about 20k people sitting and waiting for Toots and the Maytals, who didn't make their slot.  Should of gone to see Wilkinson.
Avalanches didn't live up to expectations, the pioneering live mix and sample band from all those years ago has well and truly gone.

Foo's were the biggest surprise of the weekend for me as they have never really done it for me, but were amazing. Run the Jewels were excellent, Radiohead followed by Goldie Friday night was special.  Slaves and Dropkick Murphy's were both on it as it were.  Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes were my absolute highlight sadly that did mean I had to endure the Killers as there was no getting out of that tent, thankfully they only played an hour.

Loved the changes in Arcadia, and the new track into the middle of the main stage has changed the game as far as being able to get in and out during busy times.

1 interesting aside, 20 minutes before the Foo's a bloke on his own behind us walked off and left a rucksack behind.  Some insight into how the mood of the "nation" has changed, when the mild panic subsided I have to say the security handled it very well, but there was about 15 minutes where Glasto was one dog sniff away from being evacuated it seemed.

Trainer festivals rock.

Loved the changes in Arcadia, and the new track into the middle of the main stage has changed the game as far as being able to get in and out during busy times.

That explains a lot, it did seem significantly easier than last year to get about.

I only saw Goldies '92-'94 rave set but thought it was really good. The re-vamped Metamorphosis show at Arcadia was great too. I've no idea how they did the lightning thing!

The upgrade to The Temple this year was a game changer, no more queuing to get in and the view from the top level when its full as the sun rises is unreal

Truck Festival was a real slog this year given the weather. Lovely festival and a cheerful crowd but the elements were bleak at best.

That said, saw a band called The Rhythm Method who were sensational. highlight of the weekend for sure.

It's a good job they didn't pull out.

In the words of Shakin' Stevens, lovely stuff

What were the headliners and main bands like?

Heard contrasting stories about how good/poor Libertines were.

I'm a big Libs fan but I thought they were going through the motions a bit. Still decent but didn't look that thrilled to be there. I only caught a couple of Franz Ferdinand songs as not a massive fan but sounded pretty decent. Slaves and The Wombats were both excellent in different ways. Slaves very raw and angry and Wombats very honed and professional - I'd say they were the most popular act on the bill over the weekend.

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone here, or anyone on here know someone, who might be interested in a discounted ticket to Victorious festival for the Saturday? (August 26th in Portsmouth)

Saturday is headlined by Stereophonics, with other acts including Jake Bugg, Feeder, Rita Ora, Maximo Park, Deaf Havana, Frank Turner, British Sea Power and plenty more on the bill.

I've had a change of plans and now won't be able to make it. Only looking for £30 for it, if you bought one today it would be £42 + BF. It's an email ticket so can get it anywhere in the country at the click of a button.

I also have a return coach from London to Portsmouth (out late morning Saturday, back late morning Sunday from memory) that I'm happy to give away with the ticket for free if that can be used.

Its fun reading about Pleno selling X% of his stack on day Y for ££££, less fun when I realise I can't even shift a ticket to a festival at a reasonably reduced price :)

You got any horses in Portsmouth, Pleno? ;)

Cracking offer but sadly have plans that day. Anyone southern based should be snapping your hand off.

Any courteeners fans might be interested to see that Liam Fray is doing a solo acoustic tour this autumn.

Hope no-one from here went to Hope and Glory festival in Liverpool this weekend....

First and last time we'll see this particular music event methinks!

Does anyone want a career of a band ending?

I don't go to many gigs... to say the least, only a few in 10 years... The two main ones of bands I loved were Lost Prophets, and Linkin Park...

So... If you want a band to end in one way or another, recommend me a gig to go to.

(In fairness I did catch the Foos at MK Bowl about a decade ago too, they've done ok for themselves)

It was a struggle but one of my friends this morning managed to snag 4 tickets for this 'We are Manchester' arena gig next month. Works out perfectly as the early KO that day is City vs Liverpool so I'm over in Manchester anyway. Spot the odd one out.....Noel Gallagher, Courteeners, Blossoms, Rick Astley.....interesting line up!

Also this morning we decided to do the Friday at Bingley festival the week before, where Manics and Maximo Park headline. It's been an expensive Thursday morning! But nice to have a couple of things lined up next month as its been a pretty dry summer on the gigs front.

If the announcement of a joint Wonder Stuff and Neds Atomic Dustbin tour next spring wasn't enough excitement to deal with, I somehow managed to get one of the limited availability "1990's price" tickets in the pre-sale this morning, so will be attending the Leeds gig for the grand total of £7 + £2.95 booking fee.

RESULT!!

Going to be such a fun gig.

I just found out that Miles bought out books of memoirs from the Wonder Stuff years.  The first one arrived yesterday and even though I've only got a couple of pages in it's going to be a great read from me - so many happy memories from following them around for a few years.

Bah, I was considering seeing them in Leeds, and whilst I mulled it over it went and bloody sold out. Sale Of The Century is probs in my fave top 10 songs ever.

Got my hometown heroes Shed Seven at Fibbers in York next Saturday night (new album out today!), then see The Kooks before flying to Dublin to see Shed Seven again, supported by Cast. And then Shed Seven in Hull just before Christmas. I think my girlfriend thinks I'm crazy, but thankfully she likes them too :)
