I'm quite surprised that the US have let North Korea get this far.  Given that they've (N Korea) always said they want to achieve long range missiles and possibly nuclear weapons, why does the rest of the world even let them get this close?

Because there are no military options that doesn't likely see a couple of million people killed. China could probably choke them off by closing borders IF they wanted to.......but that's a big if.

Bombing North Korea isn't the only option.   I thought I read that China was imposing sanctions after this latest test but might have misread it.

It was the UN I think with the sanctions, they made little difference before as long as supplies come through the China border. As said, China could probably choke them off if they wanted, but then again it would be the people that got fked first before the regime probably.

What's the difference between doing the test and dropping the bomb on your own country?

It depends on where you explode the bomb, even NK are not so stupid as to explode it above ground, which would cover most of its country with radioactive dust for a million years.

By exploding it underground you get the data and the political impact without all of the problems.

How come we don't just dispose of nuclear waste underground?

There is not agreement about what to do with high level waste in the long term(100,000's of years as some radioactive waste is dangerous for that long), one option is to combine the waste rods from the nuclear reactors into a glass like lump then enclose that in steel then bury it in a deep tunnel that is geologically stable, and does not have water flowing through it. However local communities in these locations are not exactly happy, so at the moment steel casks are stored above ground "temporarily" until a decision is reached. Only Finland have started this process.

Launching a nuclear bomb at the US?

Perhaps total isolation from the rest of the world, so they can't sell or buy anything, would cripple them enough into an uprising of the people. Unfortunately this would be after many tens of thousands of NK deaths, even before the uprising.

It's a shame that Trump's inflammatory comments are probably being used massively as a propaganda tool in NK.

Realistically it's hard to imagine any of these scenarios playing out as they'd certainly result in the beginning of the end of KJU's reign (plus the deaths of millions of people). The whole reason he's probably been hell-bent on nuclear technology was to deter the US from his country given all the "regime change" they've been dabbling in lately.

China will always find a way to trade with NK even if it isn't necessarily out in the open. The very last thing they'd want is a US influenced unified Korea on their border.
