At Hillsborough in February 1972. It was Wednesday v Santos on a Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm kick off due to strikes they could not guarantee power for floodlights for an evening kick off.

I think it was full, certainly over 45,000 there.

Not selhurst, but is a famous football ground. Clues in the picture. The surrounding area, one end of the ground to the other slopes about 30 feet. These days, even wholly developed, you can stand on a hill at the top end of the town behind one end and see part of the game

Molineux, the road running at the back of the old stand (see the gold paint left hand side of picture) which was the first part of the ground renovated and replaced by the white elephant of that big stand that was miles away from the pitch for decades.

In the far part of the picture you can see Manchester United fans being corralled from station to the South bank in a convoy (the away fans used to have half of the huge bank at the top end of the ground)

When my mum took me to Blackpool for a week's sea-air after I'd been unwell in 1958 - we were living in Sheffield at the time - we came to The Grand Hotel.

The Arsenal team managed by George Swindin were also staying at the same hotel and were in Blackpool a few days early for the weekend's 1st Division match having just had their polio jabs, and by and by what with my mum being quite outgoing and rather attractive we got friendly with many of the players - I distinctly remember playing a game of snooker with Billy McCullough.

Tommy Docherty was also among that squad, Arsenal's recent record-signing from Preston North End for the princely sum of £43,000.

They were staying in a Bucharest hotel while Burton was filming Blackbeard which was used by Celtic fans attending a game v Upjest Dozsa in 1972. Being fond of a party the couple had a few drinks with the fans, after the game the fans got back to the hotel to find that they had organised a party for them in the ballroom, with Burton putting a considerable sum (between £2,000 & £5,000 depending on version of the story) behind the bar for champagne and caviar for the support.
