Barry Carter interviewed John Hesp recently. Nice piece, too.

And Hesp was right, imo - people - the general population, not necessarily the poker sorts - loved the fact he seemed to be enjoying playing poker, & was not afraid to show it.

And poker has benefitted from Hesp, there has been a significant uptick in recreational play which is directly attributable to him.

It was an 888 shindig and several very well known poker pros were hanging on his every word, seems to have inspired everyone.

Interview itself didn't last as long as I wanted because he seemed more interested in talking to my wife about caravans.

Can you expand on the significant uptick and how you know it relates to him?

Across the industry, recreational play increased measurably directly after Hesp's WSOP exploits.

It can't be proven its down to him, but it's generally thought that there has been a "Hesp effect".

I don't KNOW it relates to him, but I'd bet very good money it is.

When I'm walking the dogs I make a point of smiling at other walkers from like, 50 yards away. By the time we draw level they are always smiling too and we often exchange pleasantries.
