Title: Is the forum slow?
Post by: Woodsey on December 05, 2017, 09:38:50 PM
Is it just me? Seems really slow when I’m logged in, but when I log out and view that way it’s absolutely fine.  ;carlocitrone;

Very slow for me - takes around 30 seconds to open any thread. Been like this (for me) a week or more.

The problem seems to affect some but not others.

Is fine here

Works fine for me on all browsers. Is the problem the same on all browsers for those for whom it is slow?

Since the link with DTD stopped, the forum seems to be looking for an advert and until it gives up, you can’t see the forum bit below the home, help arcade buttons.

nothing has changed, the adverts were removed long before that

For me, it's the same across all browsers & devices. I've tried 2 different laptops, mobile phone & iPad, & tried it at home & elsewhere. All are equally slow.

It's very odd, as clearly it is not affecting most users.

I don't have that problem, just slowness in opening a page or thread.

Mine on my desktop/laptop is fine.

On my phone, however, I can't even access the forum. Get the top bit up to the search bar and that's it.

Mine doesn't seem overly slow, but I do still have the odd screen width thing happening.

Just tried another browser and it's slow on there too

It's been really slow for over two weeks now, and no indication that anything is being done about it. I'm not sure whether those running it are even aware of how long it is taking, or think the problem has gone away.

I have just timed ten page turns manually and the average was 37 seconds (28x1, 29x1, 30x3, 43x4, 50x1). The 28 was the first and I may has mistimed it. It actually alternated 30ish/43, with the one exception.

I have stuck with it so far, without realising how much time I was wasting. At some point, it won't be worth it.

That exactly matches my experience, & it does not matter what device or browser I use, or whether at home or elsewhere. It's immensely frustrating, I agree. Luckily, it's not the same for most others.

I'm certainly aware of it, & I discussed it with Tighty when it first started, several weeks ago, but as the thread shows, most don't have the problem, so that makes it even harder to identify the problem.

For me, it's close to unuseable.

Quite an odd problem to have. Mine is quick on IE and Chrome

Title: Re: Is the forum slow?

I am aware of it, but no real idea how to progress as it seems limited to a few people with not much to go on...ie if it was on a particular browser etc

I asked the hosts to have a look under the bonnet when it was first raised but nothing seemed amiss, nor could they replicate the problem on various machines

Does anyone who has this issue use an adblocker?

I use AdBlock Plus in Chrome on my laptop and it works fine. I dont use an adblocker on my mobile and I have the same issue as John. I wonder if it is an ad causing it?

Doubt it's that.

I have no idea if I have adblocker, but I use 2 different laptops, a mobile phone and an iPad,  and it's the same on all of them, whether at home or out and about.

The bottom of my screen says "Resolving Host..." when a page it loading.  Looking it up seems to match my issue.

"A "host" issue, in which the browser stalls during page loading and displays a "Resolving Host" message, is caused by Google's DNS pre-fetching setting. The setting is intended to speed up navigation but can create "Resolving Host" errors unless it is disabled."

FWIW it's quicker on my phone and pad than the laptop. Haven't timed it but it's about 10-15 seconds, which I can live with. It isn't that the laptop is old and crappy - it belongs to work and is quite high spec, new nine months ago. I only use IE and don't have any adblockers, if that helps.

Again, very similar to my problem, though I have no idea if I have adblockers. Very much doubt it.

I've thought of something else. The work laptop is the only one of the three that I've never used to look at porn. Perhaps that's what's wrong with it.

Same for you?

I suspect our definition of porn differs.

I do look at a lot of pictures of old lorries, modern bridges, and Robbie Williams. You too?

I noticed it was slow the last few weeks, the only thing I could think of was that I had changed the theme from the traditional blonde layout to one of the others (SDF Theme I think) changed it back and it's working normal again. Might be worth a look at that it you use a different theme.

only 35 people are using SMF,only 68 Babylon (the blue themes)

if you are and experiencing the problems maybe try the default or blonde themes (used by 19000 people) yellow and black?

go to "look and layout preferences" in your profile menu

Changed from the lovely blue SMF back to the grey one (boo).

And it's working well now - instant responses.

It's the predictive text, innit, mixing up poker and porn. Good job you didn't incriminate yourself.  ;whistle;

It works though, so that'll do for me.

Yep that’s sorted it for me too. I was stractching my head as to why it was fine when I wasn’t logged in, of course it uses the grey theme when not logged in so that explains it......

I won’t have changed it for a dozen years, when I was in my 20’s (nearly)
