Title: Cheltenham 2018 Official Thread
Post by: Marky147 on February 27, 2018, 11:06:21 PM
Might as well fire this bad boy up, seeing as we're under a fortnight away!

Was going to add up my total points outlay, but it took me long enough to get all my bets posted up next door.

I will post them here in the morning, as I'm too lazy to do it now ;D

Getting car down Tuesday morning will stay at my mates settee tuesday night
And go again if it's not a complete bloodbath. The car is driving us back 1am from Cheltenham
So plenty of time for a beer.

My day 1 revolves round elegant escape which I hope goes for the 4miler.
Also had decent bet on sceau royal which is being underestimated by the market presently
Can't have petit mouchoir on grounds of his jumping. Footpad is a brilliant jumper and most  likely winner
But even money him or 4/6 apples jade? Only a madman would think footpad is better value.

Like la bague au roi ew for mates if she runs there. Not got stuck into handicaps on day 1 yet

Marky ballin' about in the antepost markets like its 2012. I miss the glory years of following Paul Jones' tips and getting 25/1 on loads that went off 7/1. Those were the days.

GL pal, some nice positions there.

Not had any myself yet, backed White Moon for one of the hurdles races @ 20s after its debut win. Paddys allowed me to cash out for my stake back after it had been stuffed in a race and doubled to 40/1 with most firms, so happily did that.

Annoyed I didn't back Footpad @ 14s after its debut over fences which really took my eye but assumed antepost betting for Cheltenham wasn't really a thing any more.

Bowling about, more like it. Cheers mate :D

Gives me something to do through the year, now the 'buca train is out of service.

I went in on Petit Mouchoir early for a/r, so was stubborn about not backing Footpad, too. Should have done, as it was still a decent price, even when the obvious was looking at me.

Tizzard was talking that one up at his open day, and most of his were off when that got beat.

Think I might chuck some on that, now you mention it.

Scrolled down Marky’s picks in his first post - thought ‘he’s got a good selection for the week there’ then realised that was just day one.

There’s throwing a few darts at Cheltenham but Marky just hurls a hedgehog at the board.

Funking pretty hard for Marky.

If that is right, baldfred has heavy on opening day at 7/1. Looks like a bet to me.

Am I missing something?

It's never going heavy is it? Drains like nowhere on earth.

Short of a deluge at the weekend, soft, good to soft in places is as low as I'd expect it.

Mr Claisse loves GTS.

If it's heavy, it will be GtS-Soft in places :D

I read that there may be some heavy in the going this week, as the snow thaws, and any rain comes in.

Cheltenham isn't until Tuesday week, and as Tal said, the drainage is extraordinary.

This. Whatever the gong actually is, he'll call it good to soft next Tuesday morning. We've been here a couple of times on TfT.

It takes recent rain, and plenty of it, to keep the ground soft here. There's more forecast today but then it's set fair until Saturday. Depends how much they get at the weekend I guess.

Interesting or not - maybe its time not to back the horse but back the jockey - over the last five years there are a small number of jocks who have consistently done well at Chelty, Tom Scudamore is one showing a +46p return on your investment.

Will report any good or bad tips after Sundays do with the Scuds and others if I am still standing.

It's way different to heavy just horrible gluey ground. Would hate the ground to be like this.
Gonna see what time the supreme is ran in then we can accurately
Judge the ground.

Will you be adding to your ante-post stuff Marky, or are you set and ready for action?

Guy from another forum won a Talksport/RUK comp, and posted this.

Just finished our course walk with Ruby.
Have reported on Douvan/Min/Altior in champion chase thread.
Footpad is his best ride. Confident.
Strong on Laurina.
Cant see anyway to get Apples Jade beat with Benie or at all.
Will ride Killutagh vic in the Gold cup unless ground improves. Said killutagh vic would have needed all this rain. He would have got took off his feet and jumping put under pressure on better ground.
Hopes cheekpieces will spark Faugheen but didnt sound overly confident.
Not decided on his triumph ride. Kept saying Stormy is tiny.
No worries on Getabird going left handed. Goes left handed at Willies every other day in his work

Said this about the Champion Chase

Reckons this is a very minor issue and he should be fine to race. A good farrier can pierce a small hole and draw out the pus and the horse would be good to go. He would be very positive of Altior running.

Decided on Douvan as hes the only horse capable of beating Min. He couldnt see Min turning arounf the supreme form. "Douvan is Douvan" he said.

I can't quite figure out how a couple or three years ago after you, me, and Matt had been betting on raceclear selections for six months or so when they were on a bit of a heater, I ended up having almost all of my accounts closed or severely restricted whereas neither of you two lost an account and you still even get offers.

Not sure I'd say it's a good bet, given that it hasn't raced since getting beaten at Punchestown last April.

I can let it win, if this will be its first race of the season.

Fair point, certainly is a short enough price not having a run.

Watch the market, though. If it's fancied by those in the know, it'll be pretty obvious.

I remember distinctly putting a bet on for you when you were in China - I stuck it on your account with the Irish mob, £30EW @16/1 and it won - I was thinking how amusing it would be if I had got your account closed while you were away. I checked your balance the following day and not only had they paid you out but they had credited you with a £30 free bet too !!!

I think you have the right horse in the Mares but e/w would be better.  You should be looking to get an e/w in the Champion, I have Melon.  The last is a good e/w race and so is the 2.50.  Two I have backed should be in Longines spreadsheet. I like Footpad of the favourites.  Am at work so haven't any time.

The exchange auto-refreshes and you can set your own intervals - I think standard is 6 seconds.

I think the sportsbook is similar.

Free bets are usually not stake back

There was a thread about free bet maths a year years ago but I can't seem to find it. Essentially, pick one that is as tight to the machine price as possible and back it win only.

Thanks Rinswun

Not overly fussed on the best way to use them, its more the payout issue!

It is actually in their T's & C's, different to everyone else as far as I know.

They deduct the place stake and the win stake part of the free bet if the horse places!

The shrewd bet always used to be buying the distances on the spreads if the ground is heavy.

Anyone know what the line was today?

Just having a look around oddschecker this year it is incredible how many firms who have been burnt in the past offering crazy place terms at Chelt have gone totally the other way this year.  Hills/BFSB especially.  So many firms only offering the standard 1/5 1,2,3 in the X country and bumper today for example that is effectively a 16 runner hcap.

Cheers, Ralph.

I thought I was scooping from them with my bet on Min, when he came cantering round. Altior is a machine!

He finds an unbelievable amount from being off the bridle - touched ~8 on betty.

Golfer Lee Westwood won nearly £22,000 after backing every winning horse on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival.

The former world number one, from Worksop, won Betfred's totejackpot competition by betting on the first six winners.

The golfer then bet on the seventh race and picked yet another winner.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I put £128 on the tote [totejackpot] and it paid just under £22,000."

Love this horse.   I didn't back it yesterday, as I thought it was too short in the morning, but I did last year.

He has now won the Triumph, The 4 mile chase and the cross country.

It will be tough to find a horse that has won a bigger range of races at the Festival, it must be near impossible if the horse needs a Timeform squiggle to qualify.

Hills have voided my bets on Fountains Windfall, unexpected but welcome.

Any thoughts on Penhill for the stayers, owned by Tony Bloom, someone has mentioned it to me as a good bet, will ask for more detail and update later.

Wouldn't be ploughing in.

Watch the market, though. If it's fancied by those in the know, it'll be pretty obvious.

StarSports just tweeted they took a £7k ew bet on Penhill to lose £100k

Should have checked before I posted, looks like they have binned it. I noticed on the first day it said 500 min runners to start and only getting <200 yesterday probably didn't help even though it still ran. Sorry bud

a) might want to settle a headstrong one at the back, but the starter shouldn't let them go if its that far back
b) NH horses are too broad

Thanks Rich. Saw the start of the 2.10 and there was quite a distance although no big gaps between horses.
Thought they would just make wider stalls/adjustable sides but I guess NH horses have never used them and might get spooked?

I attempt to place my free tenner on Might Bite @9/2 and get offered £4.92 or get referred - I go for referral and after a few minutes get knocked back and MB is suddenly 4/1.

Best Mate didn't run in vintage times.  Might Bite started at 4/1; that alone shows how good the field was.  They would be mad to duck this if he was fit bext year.  How many good years did Denman have?  Kauto clearly a beast though.

Nicky Henderson played down Might Bite's chances earlier today. Ground against & very competitive field.

Willie Mullins says he can't see anything beating it.

Think I've covered a third of the field with Antepost darts and a few more this morning.

My first day off work to watch the races & loving every minute!

GL to all for the rest of the card.

Got to be the worst GC field for a good while.

What now for Might Bite? Ryanair?

Worst conditions, not sure about world Gold Cup.

Great run from Might Bite, and he'll be back next year, I'd imagine.

Hoping not to be running on a swamp :D

Looks better on the chase than the hurdle course. We're a long way from Best Mate, Denman, Kauto et al.

Mate just told me that Harrington said the ground is the worst she has seen.

Can't believe they have given it as soft, heavy in places last few days.    Looks as heavy as you like to me.

Absolutely attritional conditions.

What a week it was, can't believe it's over already  :(

There were more than usual curling up after the last on the run up that hill.

Great week though with so many thrilling races - I had too many seconds but thankfully one of my oldest ante-post bets on Farclas got me out just in front.

Only 361 sleeps until the next one...

Yup, sure is.

I stole it from Twitter, but I'm sure Keith won't mind, as he put it there.

I've invested £15 in tomorrow, and that'll be about it :D

I might drag myself out of bed in time to watch it.

I'm in front, but not sure exactly how much.

I'll have a spin through the accounts tomorrow, and work out how many Starbies I'm up.

Marky if you don't mind what was the final scores on the doors for you? In terms of points?

Watching American Idol, so could do this at the same time.

Outlays

Day 1 - 37pts + 15 on the day
Day 2 - 40pts + 15 on the day
Day 3 - 25pts + 15 on the day
Day 4 - 50pts + 15 on the day
AR&M - 77pts
Dead - 105pts (46pts returned NRNB)

Net - 348pts

Thought it was about 300, which worked out just under with all my NRNB returns.

Spent about 50 points over the week, so rounded it up to 15 per day.

Returns

Day 1 - 63pts
Day 2 - 127pts
Day 3 - 121pts
Day 4 - 144pts

Totals - 455pts

Just over 100 points up, which will buy me breakfast at Starbucks with Tikay, or a nice meal on my own :)

That’s fantastic, not bad for what is essentially a years worth of entertainment with all the ante post stuff. Well done.

Yeah, it's like a thrift club really, and just hope that it pays out more than I put in ;D

This is the third time I've done it this way. Last year I lost about 50 points, and the year before I won about 400.

Brekkie in Vegas is on you. oioi

Cheers, Tikay :)

I would honestly say it's the most enjoyable week of the year for me. Well, other than Vegas, but it's close.

If I get 1/2 my money back I'm happy, and it keeps me busy through the whole year.

Breakfast  on me, and then we'll go watch some cagefighting ;)

I've actually been watching some of that cage fighting shite, and have taken a shine to TJ Dillishaw. Tough or what?

Not sure I could manage a whole evening of it yet, but it sure beats one well known blonde horse racing "expert" who has photos of Backstreet Boys on his bedroom wall.

Yeah, TJ is a very exciting fighter, as is Mighty Mouse, who also runs in the Twitch streets, with his fans.

I didn't, but have now. Agree, not like most of the stuff on Twitter, and why I don't really use it much.

Two stars in the making, for sure.
