Title: Nerdy wordy people only please.
Post by: RED-DOG on March 20, 2018, 10:37:06 AM
I wanted to talk about over used phrases, ('Springs to mind' springs to mind) but then I got to wondering if what I'm calling a phrase is actually a simile or a idiom or something, so I looked 'Idiom' up.

Apparently an idiom is a collection of words that mean something different than what the actual words say.

Example- 'Over the moon'. We know what it means but it has nothing to do with being over the moon, it's an idiom.

I didn't know any of that until just now, but afaik 'Springs to mind' can be safely classified as a phrase. (Unless of course you know different)

I've just read that back to myself and it looks completely unintelligible.

No, it's as clear as a bell.

I think as its not literal its still an idiom but I am not sure. Google seems unclear, wikitionary calls it idiomatic :P

Idioms aren't to be taken literally, so "springs to mind" is probably not an idiom, as you are saying it came to your mind quickly.

Similes are comparators, which need a word like "as" or "like": cold as ice; sweet like chocolate.

Phrase is fine. It's the broadest term.

Going to hijack this thread now Tal has spoken.

I discovered the other day that BBC is not an acronym, after all, t is an initialism, as is FBI.

Of course, GIF and SCUBA are acronyms.

Yes, if you pronounce it as though it were a word, it's an acronym.

GIF is apparently pronounced "jiff", too, with a soft G.

Shan't is acceptible, but sha'nt isn't.   They are equally incorrect though, as we should really be using sha'n't.

I shant get too upset about it.

More correctly (perhaps) the person who created the GIF thought it should be pronounced "jiff" - given the standard usage of it is with a hard 'G' their's a good argument that he's wrong and it's irrelevant that he's the person who came up with it.

More weirdly, I think, is that the company that makes it seems to think that Nutella should be pronounced "New-teller" rather than "Nut-ella"

If I try to write in a Yorkshire accent I need so many apostrophes it looks stupid.

So nerdy wordy people of Blonde, would BBQ be an initialism or an acronym? I'm guessing an acronym but i cant get my head around the fact that BBQ does not spell out or sound like 'Bar-Be-Que' so surely this makes it an initialism? But then again BBQ is not read out as 'Be-Be-Que'

Think it's a gramogram.

Looks rightish but still does not compute for me due to the different sounds each B generates. Unless you say 'Bee Bee Queue' rather than 'Bar Bee Queue' and surely if you say the former then you should never have the delight of attending a BBQ

The cooking method is not barbecuing, it's grilling in an outside environment. Barbecuing is a completely seperate thing. I guess the event itself can be called a BBQ I suppose.

I *think* we could say that BBQ is written Bee Bee Cue (as it's quicker to write) but we pronounce it barbecue (as it's just as quick to say as BBQ), so BBQ is just a shorthand stimulus for us to read "barbecue".

That would mean BBQ is actually a gramogram.
