Title: Passion Project
Post by: Mark_Porter on December 07, 2018, 11:23:04 AM
It's that time of year when I start to think about what 2019 might bring.

I want to find myself a "passion project". This year has been taken up with new jobs & relocating and I am not really doing anything interesting outside of work at the moment. I probably have 1 year max before kids arrive on the scene and life changes.

Some things that have ticked this box in the past - poker, video games, swimming, golf, school governor. I need something new in 2019 - give me some inspiration. What do you currently love doing outside of work life? What's going to fire you up in 2019?

There going be be a lot of good international rugby in 2019, I’m pretty excited to be going to watch a fair bit of that, especially overseas. Also considering going to a few IPL games now I see Buttler and Stokes are signed up for Rajasthan again, we’ll see how my money situation pans out over the next few months before committing to that.

Oh......and I got fatter again this year, I need to sort that shit out  :(

What about a charity raiser or something physical to work towards?

3 peak challenge, coast to coast walk, cycle ride?

Definintely need something physical in there with an end goal. I might sign up to a 10k again and do a bit of running.

Might try a whole season of all home and away games for Saints but that's a bit pricey.

especially as there will be 46 games next season and not 38 ;)

I was thinking a long walk or cycle ride.   Time for yourself is something that is harder to get when kids come along.  Just enjoy sleeping, especially on a weekend.

A major DIY project like an extension or loft conversion. You will probably learn new skills and add value. Extra space for future kids too.

Thanks, I like the look of those hikes, something I could do with family too.

This is a good read - https://medium.com/swlh/how-to-find-a-side-project-youre-passionate-about-according-to-psychology-97bd16588a55

...

A different sort of 10k

although training and doing that might be a bit too solitary for your liking; harder to meaningfully involve the family with.

People always do physical stuff. I've never understood why they limit themselves. Add a challenge at the end if you like.

Off the top of my head:

- Learn mandarin

- Write a novel

- Give a lecture in the future about a topic you currently know nothing about (particularly if you don't like public speaking now)

- Get an Erdös Number

- Cook a 3 course meal for a large group of people.

- Learn as much of the dictionary as you can.

- Memorise every UK number 1 hit and when it was number 1 (or flags, capitals, monarchs etc)

You set the time limits, you decide what success looks like, you get someone else (if you want) to coach, mentor, judge and you set what the prize of success or price of failure is.

Whatever you do, keep us updated please!
