Title: It's Time We had an *Official NHL Betting and Discussion Thread*
Post by: Karabiner on December 23, 2018, 11:57:16 AM
I love the NHL especially the Toronto Maple Leafs who fellow afficionados will know have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

This year they have a decent chance of having a proper tilt at winning it all. Mike Babcock is one of the best coaches in the game and in his third season at Toronto has built a team boasting a great deal of attacking flair, and this is reflected by their position in the standings after 30-odd games - 2nd place behind clear leaders Tampa Bay.

I've been watching a lot of games this season and have been betting a few too, so I'll be posting all of my bets on here in due course.

Lovely. I, too, am a massive NHL fan. Have followed the New Jersey Devils since 2000, which feels like starting supporting Liverpool in 1987.

I've been in a very deep dynasty league since 2006. 15 teams, 28 man rosters, 28 man farms. One of the fellow league member is Dave Dubynk, brother of Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan.

I'm liking Boston's chances of turning over the 'Canes in the 10pm pd @10/11- they looked very good last night with Bergeron back in a tough game with Nashville.

It's possible that Bergeron doesn't start b-t-b games after his layoff but the shortening price suggests he will, and with Rast as backup goalie they look like a solid one point win bet.

I'm having a one point win double this evening on Buffalo@StLouis 6/5 and Boston 4/9(at home to Ollie's lot but with Halak back in goal).

Enjoying even less now these are losing convincingly. Weird game this, so many saves.

Saw this new thread, and although my knowledge of the current playing rosters is somewhat limited, I thought I'd add my support and give a brief history of my love-affair with the game.

Hockey is such a great game. In my view it's gone along way to shed the "Slapshot" (a must see film for all hockey fans) image and become more the game of immense skill that's always been present, but perhaps not always the primary focus of attention. Unlike so many sports, though, you can often only see the skill moments in the TV replays, such is the speed of the game IRL.

Having spent a number of years living in Vancouver, they've always been my primary team (my father was a Leafs fan). Was living there in 1982 when they were crushed in their very first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals by the NY Islanders, who were a magnificent team of that era; the whole series swung on a giveaway pass to the Islanders hottest forward in front of goal, in the first overtime period in the very first game. The Canucks never recovered, and iirc it was a clean sweep. Quite an amazing feeling around the whole city at the time; much like when England make it to the QF/SF of the Euros/WC. They've made it to two further Stanley Cups but lost both series - most shamefully to the Boston Bruins in 2011 when after the Game 7 defeat in Vancouver there was unprovoked rioting in the streets.

More recently, I was in Vegas last April when the Golden Knights were on their own Stanley Cup run. A friend and I found a cool bar in Downtown LV, and watched a game in the first playoff round, and we were hooked as fans of the new franchise. Of course it was impossible to get tickets (at a reasonable price), so we had to make do with watching games on the screens in various poker rooms & bars. I stuck a bet on when they were c.12's and it was a great little sweat.

Finally, in a shameless brag, we fly out on 2nd January having bought tickets for the Golden Knights v Sharks game on Sunday 6th. What a game it should be, too. Both currently sitting in Playoff positions, the game will be a veritable 4-pointer. I really hope it goes into OT.

Best of luck with your bets.

I forgot to post earlier so this may seem a little  ;bigadz; but I had an early 1pt treble on New Jersey(10/11), Washington(4/5), and Pittsburgh(5/4).

NJ are currently winning 2-0, Caps are tied 3-3, and will probably go in again on the Pens if my treble is dead.

Buffalo v NYI is an interesting game too but not decided whether to play or not - will aftertime later :)

I'm having a rethink about how to post the bets on here and from now on it'll just be single selections and i'll keep my muggy doubles and trebles private ;)

This evening's selections are 1pt each:

Buffalo 4/5

Pittsburgh 6/5

Full programme of NHL this evening for fellow afficionados/sad bastards.

Karabiner, I really dont care either way so please don’t take it the wrong way, im a losing punter myself (non poker wise) other than darts were I make chunks every year and watch every tournament possible.

How much do you know the NHL? Do you make money betting it or do you just love the game and bet on it? Its not a tipping thread so doesn’t matter I’m just interested whether you have an edge or are just having fun. Helps me know how much to follow and how much just to enjoy watching.

K thnx bye

I love the NHL and enjoy betting on it now that I have the chance to watch plenty of games. I lived in Canada for 6/7 years many moons ago.

I've been watching a lot this season since I've had IPTV and my bets are based on my observation/opinion of current form trends and some basic stats.

This is the first time I've been able to give it a lot of my time so it's a moot point as to whether I'll be profitable, but I think I will be, certainly @best price in singles.

I actually like the Islanders against the Sabres tonight personally. Barzal heating right up, and very streaky, plus Lehner coming off a shutout so clearly seeing the puck well.

I also like a couple of totals. I like the Wild/Pens to go under 6. The Wild are pretty stingy at home, and DeSmith has been way better than Murray in nets for Pitts.

I like the Canes/Flyers to go over 6. Carter Hart is highly touted but he's been thrown in a bit earlier for my liking and the Carolina is a way better offensive team than defensively so Giroux and co should be able to put up a couple to see it go over.

Happy new year!

Eichel getting injured and only playing a few shifts didn't help the Sabres cause.

Rinswun you nailed it!

Sadly, I didn't quite get the over on PHI/CAR. Line of thought was right as Hart got taken out of the game by his coach with than half played. Unfortunately, his replacement came in and played really well so we didn't quite get there.

Despite the Leafs playing a 3rd-string goalie that I had never heard of due to injury and concussion protocol, to Anderson and Sparks respectively, the 9/5 Leafs-1.5 looked too good to turn down and one point has been invested. I'm not quite sure how they can be 8/13 to win and 9/5 to win by two or more!

Toronto -1.5 1pt win.

The overtime effect of it finishing a draw then being able to win by only 1 is why the odds are that way.

Good point.

Meanwhile the 3rd-string goalie is playing a blinder with Toronto having been outshot in the 1st period by 20-10 but still leading by 2-1.

Hutchinson was actually a servicable back-up with the Jets a couple of seasons ago. Not a bad third stringer to have. The Leafs really do have a strong team this year. Marner and Tavares are different class.

I like in-form Pittsburgh this evening at home to in-form Winnipeg in what should on paper be a very good game to watch.

1pt win Pittburgh Pens @4/5*

*All win bets are moneyline(including overtime) unless stated otherwise.

I love the Leafs but they are definitely off the pace currently with a few key injuries, Matthews misfiring and rejigged offensive lines since some bloke who looks like Nylander's return and the loss of Hyman and to a lesser extent Ennis; as previously mentioned we are down to a 3rd-string goalie recently acquired in a trade for a 5th-round pick next year.

Cutting to the chase I can't have Vancouver as 5/2 shots.

1pt win Vancouver Canucks @5/2

Good shout with the Pens yesterday Ralph. Easy win that.

Elias Petterson still out for the Canucks tonight? Think that is a big factor in the price.

Cheers Ollie should have gone for the -1.5

I'm pretty sure Petterson's out but still don't have a lot of faith in the Leafs who were completely dominated by the Wild the other day.

Anyhow it's kind of win/win when you bet against your guys.

Tricky card this evening in NHL - do you have any fancies?

Ottawa are not that bad at home(11-8-4) despite being bottom of the table and Carolina are no great shakes on the road(7-10-1).

Pretty bare stats I know but enough to make me take the 2.66 on a home dog.

1pt win Ottowa Senators @2.66

The bet I like tonight is the Stars to beat the Jets at 7/5. The Stars have been much improved since Klingberg returned from injury and his return seems to have sparked Tyler Seguin into some form (plus maybe the owner calling him out). The Jets are now without Nik Ehlers due to injury and their secondary scoring is ice cold (Kyle Connor has his a sophomore slump in a massive way). Struggling without big Buffy on the blue line too.

Stars took the first meeting of the season 5-1 and I think this is a good matchup for them even as visitors.

I actually didn’t back anyone outright this week. Looked well priced up, thought DJ would go well and if he were a point bigger I probably would have backed him each way. Leishman was the other one I came closest to backing, think he’ll have a big year.

I did have three matchbets though, so sweating them:

Leishman > Casey (1.9)
Reed > DeChambeau (2.12)
Snedeker > Kuchar (2.16)

Hopefully get the 1st and 3rd home as the middle one looks dead.

You got anything running?

Stanley Cup Outright Betting on Ladbrokes has (2 places) at the top of the page - or at least at the top of the list of teams. If you select a team, there isn't the usual EW tick-box.

Can anyone here tell me what this "(2 places)" means?

Thanks

I'm guessing that if the only viable bets you can see are three odds-on shots with two of those ~1/2 the sensible move would be to have no bet.

I didn't get where I am today by being sensible, so it's a 1pt w/treble: Winnipeg/Calgary/Pittsburgh which pays ~5/2.

Out-of-form Toronto are at home this evening where they have lost their last 5/6 games straight, and they are playing almost equally out-of-form Washington.

The difference being that Washington found ther shooting boots last night and were a little unlucky to lose after conceding an equalizer with one second of regulation time remaining.

The Capitals have a formidable offence led by Ovetchkin's line and The Leafs have so many players misfiring(Nylander/Matthews/Khadri) that 9/5 Washington seems huge.

I'm having 2pts Washington Capitals @9/5.

Jake Muzzin is a big ugly bruiser of a defenceman with no little talent and rocket of a left-handed shot from the point.

The Leafs just acquired him in a trade for a couple of lesser prospects and a first-round pick next year, and I think he might just be the missing piece in the puzzle.

He was inspired last night with a couple of bone-crushing checks, a goal and two assists; he really lifted the team.

I reckon we now have a real chance of going all the way this season.

On the betting front we are still +2, or +3 if we count the 5/4 winner posted on TfT, and back in action now that things have settled down after the allstar break.

1pt St Louis@5/6, and 1pt Buffalo@11/10.

Nice start back to the second half of the season, especially for the 1-scoops who had them in a double and the 2-scoops who had the treble with Boston :)  ;bigadz;

Playoffs get underway tonight, with The Leafs definitely up against it in Lightening’s quarter of the draw. Golden Knights have been a little inconsistent at the end of the season, but they have the easier side of the draw I think. A win at the Sharks tonight would be the start they need.

After the Lightning being surprisingly trounced and my Leafs appearing to have grown a pair, I may have to stick the pieces of my Stanley Cup winners voucher back together.

Go Leafs Go.
