Title: Aphantasia
Post by: Doobs on April 09, 2019, 09:00:04 PM
This has freaked me out a little; up until 10 minutes ago I assumed I was just the same as everyone else on this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34039054 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34039054)

I can't see anything, even when I try and picture my kids.

I was just thinking I must be having a bad day as I was fairly sure I see pictures when I dream, but wikipedia has just informed me that doesn't mean shit. (In the same paper, it was identified that aphantasia characterizes only voluntary visualizations; the aphantasiacs were still able to have involuntary visualizations (i.e. dreams).

Any other freaks out there, as my daughter has helpfully put it?  She has also helpfully informed me that when she reads books it is like watching a movie.  WTF?   Surely this is just a late April fool by the rest of the World?

Might have another go later...

How do you fantasise about rude ladies?

How do you fantasise about rude ladies?

I can describe a rude lady, and can imagine how it feels.

If someone switched the light off, you could still have a good time I guess?

Given I didn't previously understand that I saw the World differently, I haven't given a lot of thought in to how it affects me in different situations.

Isn't this a bit related to artistic ability?  People who can draw and paint perhaps can store more detailed images and recreate them?  I'm crap at that.

If I think of a car, I conjure up what my mind identifies as a car, but not very clearly, as if I was bringing up the essential elements of "car" stored in my brain.  If I think of Rolls Royce, I get a better image but very much as if I am moving my eyes over a Rolls Royce (and now with a rude lady sitting in the back).  If I think of someone's face I can bring up a recognisable image, but have difficulty holding it like a photograph.  It's like I have the basic recognition package.

Never really thought about it before.

Just took it for granted that everyone can visualise in their mind. Even blind people.

Doobs is defo a weirdo is the thing we should all focus on here tho :)

So my theory completely wrong again...
