Title: Recommend a laptop.
Post by: RED-DOG on April 10, 2019, 05:32:46 PM
I need to replace my beloved Dell Vostro 1710. The old girl is still working fine but she just can't cope with modern life.

I will only be using it for paying poker, watching YouTube, Sky go and browsing.

It needs to be quiet and reliable with good battery life.

It doesn't need to be unnecessary expensive.

I would prefer 18in screen but it's not a deal breaker.

Get one that you can flip the screen over and use as a tablet. SSD is a must.

Budget?

I can just about afford the cheapest one that fills my requirements unless there is a very compelling reason to buy a more expensive one. If there is, I can probably afford that.

Thanks Mr Ines.

Is the latter crap and the former overkill?

Which one would you say is best value for money?

The former is pretty much the 2019 equivalent of your Vostro - and probably the same price as it was in 2008. You might be able to spend a little less and still get an SSD and a full HD screen but I didn't spot one with a quick look around.

Title: Re: Recommend a laptop.

I hope I haven't pissed Mr Ines off with my factious reply, but answering questions like "What's your budget?" or the classic, "How much do you want to spend?" seem to defeat the object IMO.

If I say I have a budget of £200 someone will find me a £200 laptop. If I say it's £600... Well, you get my meaning.

I think you are probably right, except that my Vostro is 18in.

Thanks Mark. It looks like I would have to pay a niche market premium for a 17/18in lappy, although I must admit to liking this quote from the site you linked me to.

"17-inch laptops are the same size and weight as some 15-inch laptops"

When shopkeepers see Tom making his way to their shops, I bet they pull the shutters down & hide.

I'm after some tea-bags, but it depends, see....

I'm looking to get an XPS, but the 13 nowadays, now that I don't really play poker anymore.

Expensive business, all these decent laptops.

get an ex business lenovo thinkpad

stick an  ssd in (I am not expert and did it easily) they have generally been very lightly used and are as strong as an oxx

I have probably dropped mine 10 times sometimes on purpose and still going fine

Cost me about £120 for the laptop and the rest for the ssd

This sounds interesting.

How much is "The rest?"

No offence taken at all Tom, it's just with commodity goods such as laptops etc. you pretty much get what you pay for. The 180 quid job will be "slow" - some may never notice. It will play poker - as long as it's only certain sites and won't run a tracker which you might think is a given.

It'll have stonking battery life and be silent. It has a relatively crap screen, some will love it because the icons are bigger than normal.

Like I say I am no expert I believe a decent ssd costs £60-£80

Mine is probably 6 years old boots within seconds still never hangs or drags ok I dont run massive programs on it regularly but it has used a lot

I don't run a tracker but I don't want to be restricted to certain sites.

I don't have Sky sports but I occasionally use a friend's Sky go log in to watch Sports on my laptop.

On my old Vostro I requested a matt screen because the glossy one was too reflective, nut that might not be an option, or even a problem these days.

Sounds like a good solution.

There seems to be a lot of Thinkpad models though....

How soon do you need one Tom? I'm upgrading mine fairly soon so may have a second hand one available.

It's pretty big and chunky but has a 17" screen and is pretty high spec for its age with an i7 processor. 8GB RAM and a 1TB SSD hard drive.

It may be 6 months before I finally take the plunge and change so it really comes down to how quickly you need one.

I'm not too bothered about big and chunky, I never take it anywhere so it seems like a good option. Just bear me in mind when you're ready.

I just have to find someone to buy mine now.....

If your laptop is just feeling a bit slow Tom and the screen, keyboard etc. are OK, buy a SSD and replace the current hard disk. Will feel like you've stuck a turbocharger in it and only costs £40ish.

I think it's really too old now. Stuff keeps failing, drivers go missing etc.

"X has stopped working. Windows will close the programme and notify you if a solution is available"

I was running XP (I loved XP) but they stopped supporting it so I installed Vista. Now vista has gone to the wall and my lappy doesn't have the cajhones to run Windows 10.

Actually there has been a development with the laptop. The screen sometimes goes a bit funny when it's opened at certain angles so you have to move it about a bit to get it back to normal. Not an immediate problem but it certainly suggests that at some point in the not to distant future it could 'go' completely.

The good news is that this may expedite my requirement to upgrade.

The bad news is it may be f**ked....

If you have a separate screen then not a problem but otherwise it wouldn't be ideal.

Oh hi Mr L.

It's a new (To me) computer and the default browser is Microsoft Edge. I've just been googling the problem and it's beginning to look like that's where the fault lies.

I will try Firefox and report back.

Bought one of the Huawei Matebook X-Pros before I went to Vegas, and most happy with it.

Definitely a computer fish, so probably overkill for the basic stuff I use it for. Very good bit of kit, though.

Get you with your fancy 512GB M.2, very swish.

Finally decided my six year old laptop, which I got as a hand-me-down from my son, has seen better days and it was time for a new one. Treated myself to a Surface Pro in the Amazon Prime Day sale.

That Mr Bezos knows what he's doing, his site is worse than crack.

Not wrong there!

And again.

Parcel #6 arrives tomorrow, apparently we really needed a torque wrench.

Until last year I  made sure everything was pulled down square and even and just tightened everything by feel, then I became convinced I needed a torque wrench.

So I bought one, and now it sits unused on the shelf and I just tighten everything by feel.

I've no doubt the wrench will shortly be disturbing the cobwebs on the impact driver and ball joint splitter.

As a techie, I'm frankly amazed that they have a database that holds this. IIRC there was some deal where if you placed a certain number of orders from Amazon you got a huge amount of Amex, hotel or airline points - and that's why my first dozen orders were the cheapest things - ebooks - they sold :-)

Edge? Brave man.

Even when I was working for a company owned by MS that implemented MS products, don't think I ever saw anyone use Edge.

Edge has been kicked into touch.

OK, I Will Follow

Too good.

Was way too subtle for Red Dog.

It truly was, I'm completely whooshed. I'll have to wait for Mr L to explain it to me.

You too?
