Title: Important question
Post by: RED-DOG on July 06, 2020, 01:39:37 PM
To settle an argument, which way up do you put your bread into the toaster?

Is it this way? (Landscape)

Or this way? (Portrait)

It depends on the toaster :)

Also depends on the bread.

Only two answers  :'(

I don't think people realise just how important this question is.

Depends on the toaster. Not a simple question.

Although personally I dont use a toaster. Use the grill instead. Easier to control toasting.

I agree, but you have to watch the grill whereas the toaster is automatic so I can get on with cooking my eggs, grits & tater tots.

The 'Pop up' toaster was the holy grail of toasting machines.

You are correct BTW, it's not a simple question, but for the purpose of this survey I need to know, if you had a toaster and were not constrained by extraneous considerations, which way would you put your bread into it?

which ever way fits the toaster best

Portrait under the grill. Don't own a toaster, I think they dry the bread out too much.

Landscape for large loaves - portrait for those silly little ones that I have to buy in an emergency.

Always Landscape if the toaster will allow.  Sometimes it doesn't though in shit toasters

Landscape, if it fits.  Sometimes a little squashing does the job.

If not, I whinge loudly and do portrait, then whinge loudly again as I turn it over on setting one to do the top bit, and invariably burn a section in the middle.

+1 so I do it portrait for a couple of mins less and then turn it around.

Landscape is the obvious choice if the bread fits that way.

Take it out halfway through and flip it if it has to be portrait and sticks out the top. A lot of sourdough breads have to be done this way, but with a liberal slaver of butter they taste so good that it’s worth the effort.

I take it Tom lost the debate at home?

Our fave bread has always been slightly too long for the toaster slots, so I've always sort of squeezed/concertina'd the slices to get them in.

Last week our usual brand of bread wasn't available, and the loaf we bought in it's stead was perhaps 1/4" longer again, making the concertinering almost impossible.

I gave vent to my frustration in a somewhat profane manner, which prompted Mrs Red to ask, "Why don't you just put it in the other way around?"

Of course I laughed in her face.

"The other way round? No one ever puts bread into the toaster the other way around".

I can honestly say, hand on heart that I had never even considered such foolishness and I truly believed that no one else had either. In fact, I was so convinced that I became involved in a wager that involved a full body massage and washing up.

For the record, I will be doing one of those things and I won't be getting the other.

Cheers guys.

However if you put the bread portrait it’s likely give the longer bread that the top will stand proud of the toaster. This either leaves you to have warm bread top on your toast or requires you to flip the toast.  You can either do this mid toast and have slighted toasted either end with normally toasted middle. Or you can cancel said toast at some point, flip the bread and continue toasting. However this does risk get a burnt middle with toasted ends especially if you get distracted and allow the second toast to run its course. Nothing is as simple as it seems.

Isn't it stupid that you should have to compromise like that.

They could make a toaster with slightly longer or deeper slots. Hell, I'd even pay slightly more for one.

One like this? Maybe someone will invent it one day.

OMG! That could be the toaster of the future.

Three important questions:

Does it really exist?
Do they do a wide slot version?
Does it come in a choice of colours?

Tough times when you have to consider downgrading on the toaster front.

Lanscape for me too, though I like the idea of doing a bit of portrait for smaller loaves where it is hard to get the slices out when toasted.

So, before, you were desperate for one with longer slots - and now you're getting fussy.

There are lots of amazing toaster designs available. This is my favourite:

What a ridic question.

If it's too big for landscape, just cut a bit off the end of the slice. Feed that bit to the birds, everyone's a winner.

Daftest answer yet.

That's like cutting your toes off and feeding them to the dog because your shoes are too tight

That looks like the best thing since sliced bread.

British Rail 'cafes' used to do 10p a slice toast many moons ago. The top was NEVER toasted. Used to annoy me more than it should have. Oh, how I would love a slice of toast and a proper cup of coffee waiting for trains nowadays.

A couple of years ago I was waiting for my train at Leicester station. I went into the cafe/buffet thing, not with the intention of buying anything you understand, just to get out of the cold.

Imagine my flabbergastation to find they did an excellent bacon cob/cup of tea combo for a very reasonable price.

I can't remember now exactly how much it was now but to impress me it can't have been more than £1.50.

Did you say 10p a toast Knotty? How old are you FFS?

I thought only bottom burps of my vintage could remember things like that.

Did it have butter on it BTW?

Lets just say it was a 'few' years ago hey ;)

It was when I had my 1st office job (YTS gives you a clue), and I would always rush to catch the train but would be too early to actually start work. Grabbing a decent coffee and (yes, buttered) slice of toast, set me up for the morning before commencing my working day. I also remember them discontinuing the toast and  had to venture out to cafes. They turned out not so cheap, so become a pay day treat, rather than my daily BR early morning visit.

I had to look YTS up but fair play, you do qualify as a boring old fart.

At least you don't still mentally convert 10p into two shillings.

I've just noticed that the top of that flying slice of toast isn't toasted, so that high-tech machine failed Red's original requirement.
