Title: Cheltenham 2021!
Post by: StuartHopkin on March 02, 2021, 08:56:18 AM
Two weeks to go........

Not much on for me so far except a reasonable treble on Shiskin, Honeysuckle and Monkfish

I don't think I have an ante-post book.  I tried to take the 8/1 Goshen after the Kingwell, but if it ever existed it was only for seconds.  I tried to get Honeysuckle too, and don't think I got on that either.

Booked for the betting emporium meal at home preview evening.  Zoom and microwave this time. It may well be better as train times mean I always run off early. I think I have watched all the Road to Cheltenham videos so far.

I don't think I mentioned it before, but Timeform wrote to me a couple of months ago telling me they were no longer producing the annuals.  Even though it is barely read these days, and it is only inertia that has stopped me cancelling it, I still think that is pretty sad.  Might have to get that read on all the major horses in the nect couple of weeks too.

I've started adding a few bits, but other than 5pts on Goshen after he came down in the Triumph, didn't really have anything until this year.

Didn't want to get involved, once I realised just how sideways things looked like going, and one of my few smart decisions.

Cheltenham was my Vegas thrift club every year, and I'd just buy $$ with what I got back and spray it around.

Might have to eat more Panda Express , if I manage to make it out in the summer ;D

Afternoo stranger ;D

Same as that, once I realised how chaotic 2020 was looking like. I just did almost nothing all year. That's even before you start with the madness of the last few weeks!

I've done a bit more the last month or so, and tried nipping a few in the handicaps now the weights are out.

If WH or others offer 6 places etc on the triumph again this year, but accompanied with short prices, remember that you can click the "SP" box and don't have to take the bad prices.  The industry SP should be competitive enough I would think.

Anyone paying six places in The Supreme yet?

Could be pretty grim for each way punters.  6 left in the Arkle, only 8 in the Supreme, which could be vulnerable ... 16 in the Ultima, so one out seems inevitable.

The Boodles Fred Winter and the special offers in the National Hunt Chase could save us.

No idea on the Champion chase, think I have swung between 5, it is a bit the same with the Champion Hurdle, where I might just wait and see the prices.

Backed Ballyadam fifth first 4 in the Supreme at the weekend, no idea what happens there.  I had a couple of each ways ready in the Arkle.

Would have been all over Royal Pagaillie tomorrow.

Am thinking now that I might only have bets in 3 or 4 races tomorrow; come tomorrow, always a chance I go nuts.

I wasn't even bothered, I had Altior @ 10/1 and was just going rail that.

Might back Greaneteen or something e/w w/o CPS.

I'm glad about RP going GC, as I've got Galvin in a treble with Honeysuckle & Jan Blachowicz (who won the other weekend).

I'll post my day 1 bets later on, as I'm probably done unless it abs belts down all night.

Day 1 Multiples

Appreciate It - Supreme
Shishkin      - Arkle
Honeysuckle - Champ Hurdle
Concertista   - Mares Hurdle

1pt ACC  @ 36/1 - PP NRNB

Dead

1.5pts @ 25/1 Keskonrisk            PP(NRNB)
1pt @ 20/1 Thedevilscoachman         WH
1pt @ 20/1 Blackbow (w/o Shisk)   EW           PP(NRNB)
1pt @ 14/1 Coko Beach            PP(NRNB)
2.5pts @ 12/1 Dickie Diver                 PP(NRNB)

Only benefit of not doing much before NRNB came in, is I've only lost 1pt on day 1 from non-runners.

Gutted they've gone Marsh with Blackbow, and equally gutted I didn't get the same price for him w/o Envoi Allen in the Marsh... Silly mistake.

Was always my fav day of the year when working for firms the head of horses always seemed to feel the pressure of day 1 more than any other day because there are usually so many more hot pots to get beat and they usually have to knock it out on Tues and wait all week to get it back on Friiday

Working for a firm during Cheltenham is the best thing ever, such a buzz. And I've got two strings to that bow as Gill is with 365.

SportingLife.com now sponsor the Arkle, so there was an internal round-robin today which included this wonderful photo.

When Sporting Life (the newspaper) closed a part of me died, I used read it every day from cover to cover for well over 30 years. I'd go up to Kings Cross Station at 4am & get the early edition, maybe a Timeford Card too. Loved the Tony Morris breeding column, & of course the Dick Whitford Ratings.

I can only barely remember the paper SL at uni during the mid 90s for maybe a year in the betting shops.   I read the SL website a lot now the content is much better quality across sports than the racing post site and paper.  40p increase in the price of the RP from today nearly £120 a month now to read the paper version.  Tough to justify the expense.

Haha, I bet it was carnage!

I never saw my first boss more stressed than the 2002 Cheltenham with the entire family/board watching on behind him.   One of the few times i saw him standing up during a race!  i doubt the sweats matter nowadays given they are worth billions just fun sweats now even though they are bigger financially.   I think they mattered a lot more relatively twenty years ago to the future growth.   Really was the glory days of working in a young upstart company taking on the establishment.  The other great thing then was the vast majority of lumpy bets came on the phone so it was proper carnage shouting them across from the call centre.

Title: Re: Cheltenham 2021!
Post by: Doobs on March 16, 2021, 12:08:28 PM
I really like both horses and we seem to have 3 really good 2 mile hurdlers to watch right now, but it seems to me that Goshen and Honeysuckle could both ruin each others chances today.

Add to that the fact that Epatante ran really badly in her last race.  It wasn't just the finish, she put in some quirky jumps throughout.   I am not saying the front 3 are bad horses, for instance Honeysuckle has been my first name in the ten to follow for the last two years, just that this probably isn't the day to back any of them  This reminds me very much of 2019, where you could raise a doubt about the front 3 in the betting.

Add the fact we have a bunch of bookies going a fifth first 4.  This means we are getting great plave terms in a race where the first 3 might be all bad bets.  I think all in all this means backing each way in the Champion Hurdle is a great bet this year.  I have gone pretty big on Silver Streak e/w, who is a bit of a ground doubt, but you can make the same argument for Abacadabras, Sharjah  and pretty much all those at the bottom of the betting.

Can't believe you got 25/1 Homme Public Marky,I thought the 20/1 I got was really good (there is little between that and Houx Grix on French form according to Rory Delargy at Neil's preview evening).

Have added Rouge Vif, so I've got something in the CC.

15:05 - QM Champion Chase   2m       G1

0.5pts  @ 25/1 Rouge Vif
1.5pts  @ 12/1 Rouge Vif (w/o CPS)

Both e/w.

I quite like Notebook in that race.  I don't think he is a worse horse than Politologue and was 4x the price last night.  Still think he is probably a bet at 30/1 from 40/1.  The track is likely a negative though, but place terms are great.  Defnitely an each way race for lots of these.

The 2nd is another decent each way race, even if it is quarter first 2.  Backed Eklat De Rire.

The cross country is also good, as a few are going a fifth first 4.  Easysland needs it pretty soft and who knows how far Tiger Roll has declined (If O'Leary is correct then he should be opposed?).  Some Neck is just over evens first 4 on betfair, and that seems value, so getting 2/1 is pretty good, also the win is a strong possibility if both the top 2 can be opposed.

Bookies are also doing great each way terms in the county, and getting a fifth first 4 in the flat race is really decent given the front 2 is so short.  Three Stripe life and Ramillies seem obvious.

Add in the grand annual and it is a really good day for each way backers.  I was fearing the worst before the meeting, but the bookies have been kind other than all the restrictions anyway.

Marky, I think you can watch all the races on betfair now.  I watched the last on there and hadn't had a bet.

What did he gain by pulling him early?  This was always a possibility.

Great horse though.

So after celebrations last night, 4 hours sleep, an hours walk at 5am I’ve decided to take a partial cash out offer of 300 Envoi / 250 the field. With other bets my position on the race is £322,000 Envoi or £250,000 the field.

Thanks to @BetfairBarry @Betfair

 # ComeOnEnvoi

I'd have laid off, but first port of call would have been a few lads I know that were on machine clicking some years ago.

Managed another win yesterday with Put The Kettle On, but was one of my smallest bets of the day and I put more on Notebook.

I also got 3 places for a small positive day, but still down overall.

I seem to have backed a lot of shorter priced ones in the handicaps today.

I am a bit grumpy about missing the price on The Shunter today. Someone pointed out to me that the best strat for Cheltenham was to back this NRNB for all its Cheltenham races as it was bound to start way shorter than the roughly 12/1 on offer in each race.  Guess you'd be risking your account if you did.   Given what happened at Tipperary, I am not sure that you'd want it to get too short for the connections.  https://twitter.com/theracingman4/status/1278342911286009856  (https://twitter.com/theracingman4/status/1278342911286009856) .

I had Galvin/Honeysuckle in a treble I put on before Blachowicz fought Adesanya a couple weeks back, but not sure I can really count that in this :D

Got 25pts back from 1/2pts e/w and a free bet on Vintage Clouds day 1, but bricked everything yesterday.

Happygolucky would have returned 14pts more, but missed the last, and even then might not have rein in VC.

Like Marky lost a few tight ones - Happygolucky/Nube Negra to name a couple.

Doing pretty well, multiple bets all over the place as always but the main highlights being;

Invested all my Paddy & Sky free bets on the Shiskin/Honeysuckle/Monkfish treble over the past 4/5 months.

Ordered the Racing Post Festival Guide for the first time and Sky Pirate & Black Tears both jumped out at me so had reasonable EW singles on them.

Why?  The front 3 are all very good, but have you got it each way?

I am probably about even now after 2 winners and a few places yesterday.  I am sure I'd be well up if I had done level stakes on every horse.

My ante-post wager on Adagio not looking very promising.

Why?  The front 3 are all very good, but have you got it each way?

I am probably about even now after 2 winners and a few places yesterday.  I am sure I'd be well up if I had done level stakes on every horse.

No. I backed it after it's last run - 68 days ago.

It really impressed me then but it's had a mild bout of colic since.

I am however slightly in front after a small ante-post bet @23 on Tellmesomethinggirl which I had completely forgotten about.  ;bigadz;

Tony Keenan who put up Concertista in last year's race @28/1 put it up a few weeks ago - he absolutely owns that race!

Would take that every race despite you scaring me this morning, 16/1 e/w isn't so bad.

Wow, I backed Champagne Gold at 13 on betfair this morning, they just announced on ITV it was 5/1 favourite.  Betfair still has it at 10 (3rd favourite).

These industry prices are getting really grim

Edit Now 12 on betfair, still 5/1 favourite?

Pets Fancy is 38 on betfair.  Bet Victor have it at 10/1, Boyles 11/1.  Funny thing is neither would actually lay me a penny at those prices.

In the old days at least they had to back the horse to protect themselves from multiples, now they can just quote a reduced price.

Now 65/70 on betfair, so drifted to 20/1 and above with some bookies.  Unibet still 14/1.

It was very odd in the earlier race, because ITV were saying it was backed into favourite at 5/1, and on the off I couldn't lay off at a profit (having backed at 13)

Simon Rowleyfile is one of the tipsters who's column I read regularly and he put up two rags for today but I missed the prices and I'd already put Rachel and the champagne horse as my competition entry for the 1.55pm race so decided to leave it. grrr

In the end I thought I'd better have a nominal interest so placed a £2ew double the pair at Laddies shitty prices:

Belfast Banter 33/1 and Martinhal 25/1 in the lucky(hopefully) last.

That's that, for  another year...

Just did a quick tally, and taking the UFC/Chelts bet out I lost 25pts over the week.

Chelts Results

Day 1 - 18.5pts out (23.5 but 5pts back lay)    25.00pts return
Day 2 - 18.0pts out (17 bets +1pt nr)       0.00pts return
Day 3 - 26.0pts out (all n/r nrnb)      45.00pts return
Day 4 - 19.5pts out (all n/r nrnb)       6.75ts  return

82pts out 76.75 back

5.25pts loss + 20pts through week.

Had a 5pt per day budget starchasing and managed to abs brick the lot there, other than a couple n/r returns, so just wrote the lot off :D

Think I ended slightly up.  I was definitely up on my main account, and definitely down slightly on a couple of others, but a couple I haven't checked.  I backed one winner in the wrong race, and hadn't backed another I thought I had, so could have been much better.  But given I was well down part way through day 2, it was definitely a good result

I can see why he didn't cash out - he already had >£50K in his account before the acca copped.

He's a member at the Cheltenham forum I'm a member of, and a nice fella.

I know everyone there was on Envoi in a ton of multiples, so that will likely have cost him another lump.

I had a chat with last month, as he kindly gave me a nudge to suggest contacting the docs about getting my vaccination early b/c of pre-existing conditions etc. I'd luckily had it the week before, but nice of him nonetheless.

Had a chat about vegas/chelts etc. He was actually out there when it shut down last March, as it goes. Was waiting for his Mrs to come out and join him, then they literally turned the lights off and shut the hotel while he was there!

Said he had a good antepost portfolio, so will have to check-in next week and see how he got on.

Plan to catch up when Sky finally get the poker tour back on, so we can chuck a few pence into your pension pot, too ;)

what an amazing grand slam game that was.  So gutted the welsh skipper hasn't got his fourth GS.   He is a proper all time rugby great.   Love Jones.  I thiink he will be liike Brady and just keep playing for years longer than people think.

Its a great video.  It shows in two seconds how you are beat and know you can't possibly win as a jockey.
