Moving the Big Blind

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables
Post by: yt on March 14, 2006, 01:23:40 PM
Obviously Big Blind.
However I play at one place where they moving the seat corresponding to the vacant seat and that works and IS very fair. It's major downside is the amount of time it takes to flap about getting the right person to move. "is it 3 from the button or 4?" etc etc.

everywhere I have ever played moves the Big Blind..the random element with regard to who is in the BB at the relevant time is vitally important to all participants

Any option involving moving a certain stack sixe is ridiculous

Sheffield have an idiosynchratic method of moving the BB

who then chooses the BEST seat (unless he's thick) when arriving at the new table.

I still haven't figured out the logic behind that one  :dontask:

It is random....ish

During the EPT we saw some very dodgy BB moving, they wanted certain players to be on the TV table so the TD's loiterd untill that player was in the BB......

I voted for moving the big blind because it seems fairedt.

Guess we'll have to go with democracy at the end of the day though.

IN MY LOCAL CASINO PEOPLE WHO ARE SHORT STACKED ARE MOVED, AND THEN MADE TO WEAR A DUNCE'S HAT. THEY ARE THEN KICKED AT LEAST 10 TIMES BY EACH PLAYER AS A DETERRENT FOR LOSING CHIPS.

But may change to moving the short stack. It sounds like the best way to get rid of these players. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables

The short stack should be moved. They tend to hold up the game for better players anyway by only playing premium hands and never bluffing!

I think they should be moved..............................................to the Blackjack table!

Moving the shortstack seems smart. They've got less chips to carry and are for obvious reasons are less likely to put up a fight.

Also its a good laugh if they move and are knocked out next hand.

If you move the short stack, theres less chance of chips being lost from the tournament.

Clumsy big stacks just drop them on the floor when they move and don't notice, bad for the game.

I'm coming around but not quite convinced yet.

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables
Post by: TheJagster on March 14, 2006, 03:23:42 PM
If you have two tables left and try and keep the Shortstack in but knocking others out you can sometimes get a great game of Shortstack tennis going!

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables
Post by: Decider on March 14, 2006, 03:25:37 PM
Instead, we could move all short stacks to their own table, and let them play amongst themselves until they have a big enough stack to be allowed back in.

We move the shortstack here in the north!!! It is the best way, i am never shortstck so don't get moved... Why would i want to cart around my masses of chips when a guy with 1 chip could be moved table!

Maybe even into the BB that would be ideal, UP THE LADDER WE SHOUT!

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables
Post by: Rod Paradise on March 14, 2006, 03:28:52 PM
Having played an online MTT and been on a table where every time they moved the BB they seemed to have just had a hand & had a decent amount of chips, everyone moved in had a low stack. When they broke up the 2 tables for the final table I had the biggest stack at my table, on the final table EVERY player from the other table had more than me.....

Move the small stack.

I have played in UK and Vegas and it is always the short stack who is moved, regardless of where he is in relation to the BB, or where he will be in relation to the BB.    I think this is the fairest way of doing it, natural selection.

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables

I'm just a Tribeca online player, where the shortstacks are routinely moved, just after they hit the big blind on one table... and then moved into the big blind on another table... for double punishment.

Frankly, I wasn't aware that there was another way of doing this?

I suggest that all small stacks are moved to a table in the car park, where they have to play whilst dodging traffic. At the same time all players with normal levels of chips can have a break and throw stones at them.

gotta say, Im suprised by this. there's nothing worse than losing a big hand then getting moved and having to rebuild on a new table. you aften end up posting more than your share of big blinds. you often also develop a 'seat of death' where one short stack after another get shipped in and picked off. I'm quite aware people have to get knocked out for the tourney to end but I'm suprised people would rather it be the short stack as opposed to the BB which is randon and by definition, more fair. oh well, you live and learn.

A new suggestion which i hear they may be testdriving in the wpt events next year is simply to tell the short stack that there is a toilet break.

Often shortstacks have weak bladders so they will rush off to the loo. In the meantime have a quick race for his/her chips and resume teh tournament. When they return, explain they just didn't make it back in time and were blinded out, bad luck.

They will accept that this is the standard way to leave a tournament and voila, problem solved.

Maybe we have stumbled upon a new variation of poker?

At the end of every level, the shortstack at each table is moved up out of their seat, and out of the competition.

Could be a goer?

At Blonde Bash two anyone with less than 7x BB at any point will be moved into the Big Blind for each hand at a different table. That way he or she will get a brief chance to become acquainted with all their fellow blondeites prior to their exit from the competition.

There is a real art to tournament directing you know!

I will brook no argument on this, unless of course we sort the short stacks by post count and move the players with the fewest posts first.........

Funny story, another of Kirk Douglas' son's, (can't remember his name) was a rotten stand-up comedian and was once doing a gig in London, he was getting a lot of abuse for his show from the crowd, and eventually he snapped and said, "You can't do this to me! I'm the son of Kirk Douglas." Quick as a flash, one of the punters stood up and shouted, "No! I'm the son of Kirk Douglas." Another of the audience followed suit, standing up and screaming, "I'm the son of Kirk Douglas." Until eventually most of the crowd and stood up and joined in. The real son departed the stage shortly after.

Title: Re: poll - balancing tables
Post by: stallyon on March 14, 2006, 07:54:11 PM
i chose to move the short stack. lets take a few minutes to look at a few reasons:

moving the short stack:
they obviously dont know how to keep their chips and so could be considered dead money - keep them on the table and use them to build your own stack? however, if they dont know how to play well then they could really call anything and so win a monster hand with betting on rubbish when you bluff at them - do you want this to happen? play is not disrupted as they leave as they dont have that many chips to move across - this can be done quickly and efficiently. once a player cant put in 2x BB then he isnt worth considering and is jst taking up a seat that could be occupied with someone with more chips for you to take.  in fact, why move them at all? just split the remainder of his chips amongst the other players at the table and kick the loser out into the streets.

just sounds to me like an amazing lack of vision. Surely they should be taking heed of what people are saying??

Yes we all know that customers moan regardless, and even when things are going wrong some will still compliment the place, which as long as there are compliments coming in i guess they dont care. Sounds like a bit of a challenge though and i can see why people said Nightfly did a remarkable job with such constraints, kinda makes me fancy a pop at it tho lol as i know gala management in some clubs are willing to listen as me old guv'nor is making slight changes for em in Brum

<Serious>
Moving the BB makes more sense, as moving tables is an information disadvantage, I can see no sensible argument for picking on the short-stack in this spot. Moving the BB is fair as even if they move into the BB on their new table, they are not out of pocket. If you've just folded your SB, leaving you enough for one real raise and 9 hands to pick it, then get yanked into the BB, you've been done.

...........................................................thats it just stand up and leave them, stop the clock and all go for a beer.
They will then become so insecure and build a sense of unfullfilment with the game, they will then leave quietly and never play again.

or just swop SS around between each other every hand until they feel sick.

I've never even thought about this before because when I've played it's always been the BB so that's just how I thought it was.

It makes so much more sense to move the short stack. Not just because we don't like short stacks but to avoid one table having loads more / less chips than the others.

Do many tournaments move the short stacks?

Yeah it would be really fair wouldnt it, when the low chipped table, receives a low chipped player who gets knocked out and replaced by a low chipped player who goes all in and is called by another low chipped player who is then knocked out and replaced with a low chipped player. The table now has 12000 chips between them and the blinds are 5000/10000.

Love your thinking evilpie.

Hopkin you are undoubtedly a tool.

If a player has just been knocked out why would that table be low on chips? They have exactly what they started with. It's when you take a big stack from the other table that you get mismatches in each table's total chips.

Maybe we have stumbled upon a new variation of poker?

At the end of every level, the shortstack at each table is moved up out of their seat, and out of the competition.

Could be a goer?

When did you get a job at Ladbrokes?

If you have two tables left and try and keep the Shortstack in but knocking others out you can sometimes get a great game of Shortstack tennis going!
This is funny and so true when it used to happen in the Triangle in Bristol years ago. The dumb shorty would even pick his his chip or sometimes chips, fags and drink up and make a really slow walk 5 yards over to the other table in order to miss the next hand and then if someone busted he would sort of be in the twilight zone.
