Ok... been thinking about this for a while and am still not sure if this was a great chance to get away from bottom set. I've lost my hand history, but this is the hand to the best of my recollection....


Full table of 10 players, in a £2 MTT on Betfair, 70 left of a 400+ field, with top 50 piad... but top 3 is the only decent money really, so plenty of time to go.


I'm in about 5 position, with 4s 4c

I have approx 9k with blinds at 200/400

Two passes to me and I call, there one more call after me from a 10k stack, passes round to BB, who's got 40k and he checks.

BB bets 400, i reraise to 1500, other limper moves all in and the BB calls.

I didn't even think and called instantly.

limper had 9c 9d and BB has  Ahrt 2h

Top set held up to win.



I would normally say set over set is impossible to get away from, but in hindsight i'm sure i could have passed here. Any opinions?

Sure you know You are up against a big draw, but the other may be an over pair or TPTK

I fail to see the relevence of it being a £2 comp. Maybe this £2 comp was playing within his bankroll - we all gotta start somewhere.

As for can you get away from it? No - just ask yourself if this situation was to happen 10 times, how many would you likely be infront? Quite alot.

You did nothing wrong.

I find opponents in £2 comps a little bit loser than £2000 comps.

You can get away from it, its a huge laydown but if you think you're behind you're away from it with only a 2k loss and you've still got more than 10 BB's.  A lot of people forget trips can get hammered quite often, mostly by straights and flushes and both draws are on there with 1 guy having the flush draw and missing.

Not saying Id have folded in the same situation, Id probably have went for it too but if you consider you're stack if you fold in relation to the blinds, the straight draw and flush draw on board and the 2 overcards with 2 all ins before you then there is a lot of reasons to make a conservative pass.

Around £2000  is what i meant, €2000, $2000, whatever it is its tougher.

Have played enough events over €1000 to know that they dont play like a £10 rebuy or a £2 freezeout!

Set over set is just tough luck, happens occasionally. Next tournament.

I appreciate the set over set thing being tough to get away from, but does the bet, raise, re-raise, call not suggest to anyone that the set might not be good here?

yes, but it could just as equally mean nut flush draw and top pair top kicker from the two opponets at this level

If this was say a £1,500 Festival Main Event I don't think anyone would lay this down, and if they did it would be a mistake to do so.

Of course this is unless you know your opponent well and a higher set is in your opinion their most likely holding.

A set is the most difficult hand to read in holdem (IMO), which is exactly why you shouldn't be afraid of action when you hold them.
The chances of set over set are so remote it just isn't worth thinking about.
