Title: £1500 European Poker Classic at the Vic - LIVE UPDATE DAY TWO PROPER
Post by: tikay on March 25, 2006, 03:13:03 PM
Sorry for slight delay in starting the Live Update.

Slight "technical difficulties" have arisen, but it will be up & running very shortly.

Sorry!

But you can have a llitle guess at what excuse they come up with......

Vodafone Card?

No power?

Lappies busted?

And Dave ruing me too, "I'm running late, can you let them know?". ""Err, I'm at home Dave". "Thought you were in the comp". Grrr......

Talk dave out of the Nowab match tikay. If Simon (and it is a big if obviously) brings his A game it will be a walkover imo. His heads up game is 2nd to none when he puts his mind to it. I think the ammounts being talked about may focus  his mind as well. I am sure Jamie is about so can we get a market on this match please?

Hiya Jen's Mum! (says he, trying manfully to maintain interest whilst we await our Intrepid Updaters resolving the problems.)

Weather a bit better here today......

Jen's mum (Legume) - how's your knee? Jen looked positively radiant last night, truly. She's the tops.

I'm not sure The Nowab is ready for Dave yet, to tell the truth.

Oh and before anyone thinks I am critising Daves game in my above post I am not- just that Simon is a great heads up player when he tries. You don't finish 2nd in the world heads up championship by just being a lucky fish you know :)

Dave suggested including Omaha. Simon quickly put the lid on that!

They are both good Heads-Up players, but I gotta go with Dave.

Knew straight away I posted it that it would be taken the wrong way. I will have a little side bet with you Tikay on chubbs if you think hes not ready, couple of hundred at even money? that is presuming the match is holdem. If it is omaha I am not gettig involved at all (and neither will chubbs if he has any sense)

I admit - it is all my fault.  All is well now, and the A World of Poker Gents have set up a nice fourway power thing, helpfully listed the whole redraw and are generally being an asset to this corner.

The two tables downstairs have lost the five who have been lost, among them Michael Svobodny and Paul Foltyn.  Vicky Coren spotted round the corner smoking what looks like post-tourney cig too...

I'm looking forward to this. I'm surfing the Forum, playing the $250 Freeze on Laddies, & watching the Update. Can't be bad.

came back for day 2 with a measley 6800, stole the blinds on my first round to tred water then on my next BB i picked up AT, one limp and my remaining 5.5k has to go in, original limper immediately goes all in and i think im drawing almost dead. To my delight he flips 55, flop is 6 7 8 giving me some extra outs but a 5 on the turn leaves me drawing very thin and a J on the river seals the deal, gg me. Never mind.

Gl to all blondes left in, particularly David Gent (geeforce1) any updates on his progress would be much appreciated

El Blondie is hanging on, but looks much more relaxed (and awake) than last time I saw him... He's got superstack Marc Goodwin on his table for good measure.

I think he has earned the right to jump the ladder as a one off Flushy. If he manages to defeat chubbs or the yongster I may even give him a game myself. The heads up list of the vanquished grows you know...yoyo,chubbs,rob (hehe- best heads up player I have played seriously, so the most satisfying), atit, mercier. Sure I could fit Tikay and Dave on there as well if they qualify :)

There is one table lurking unhelpfully downstairs, but it looks to be being broken in the next 20 minutes or so, and then everyone will be neatly gathered in the tourney area.

Ram Vaswani is OUT -

Apparently it was a two hand combo - "I ran 5 7 into AA.  (Suited)."  That sounds horribly familiar... except this time the Aces held up.
Then it was  Kh Ks vs.  8d 8h - which one might have thought would be good.  "But not after the first card out was an Eight.  Can't win with the worst hand, or the best hand."  Ah well.

Ooops missed big bazza off that list at robs home game. Sorry bigman. My losses have come at the hands of Junior, womble and the bubble so no shame there. Rob and chubbs have obviously beaten me in the past as well but you're only as good as your last game guys ;)

We have an interesting table thrown up by the redraw which features The Camel, Anders Berg and Woody Deck, all of whom seem to be in fairly comfortable chip shape.

Mad Turk is OUT -

Ad Js on the button seemed like a good time to re-raise all-in, and it was, if not for the fact that the big blind woke up with  Ac Ks!  He seems more phlegmatic than last night, the end of which saw his chips drift towards Trevor Reardon.

Por Jen ordered her blonde Hockey shirt ages ago, her "favourite hand" emblazoned on the back in 12" high numbers. I gave it to her yesterday, reminding her that she'd take a lump of cash off me with it in a Paris Cash Game one night.  But since then, she's kinda cooled on that hand.....

Ah, Marc Goodwin might have, oh, 18k fewer after Doubling Up El Blondie:

They got about 6k in preflop, then saw this: 7c 6s 2d.
Dave checked, Marc bet 7,000.  Dave quickly moved in, quickly got a call.

Blondie:  7s 7d
Mr. Cool:  8d 9h

The turn paired the 2d and the rest is history.

Down to 72 players out of the 87 who started today.  That means that pesky table is still there downstairs and I am going down there to see who's left on it.

Blinds still at 500 - 1000, 50 ante, which means they must have done what they were talking about last night - repeat this blind level.  I don't know whether the players were aware of this, but if Day 1A's guys didn't know, then it wouldn't have been fair to tell Day 1B's... what do you think?

There was a bit of an floor-man calling argument over what one is and isn't allowed to say about one's hand.  Tony Chessa and John Kabbaj were maintaining that revealing the actual two cards in your holding wasn't kosher, but I think it was Tim Flanders who insisted on the ruling that as long as your cards aren't shown you can talk til the cows come home...

Dan Samson is OUT -

I asked him if it was anything dramatic, and he shrugged and said, "Aces against AK.  One King on the flop, and one on the river."

I like the way he's always so good natured about these events - never seen a grumpy post-knockout interview with him.

They are both lovely fellas, hard not to want either to win. Mr Cool is forever smiling, a "glass half-full" man, & he's been great to Jen & I - except for that bloody helicopter ride.

But Dave is running back into form. Because he's had a quiet year, peeps forget, he's probably won more money on the European Tourney scene than almost anyone. The man has seriously good game, & you ignore that at your peril.

It looks like Mr. Woodley is on form today as well as catching some nice hands at handy times - RED told me that earlier he made a button raise with  Ac 8d, got re-raised by the small blind who moved in, and called - finding himself against King high.

He raises to 4000 with 88 playing a 12000 stack, fella named Adrian re raises all in behind with 99 and Ian Woodley then gets involved from the BB with QQ. RED-DOG considers himself pot committed which i agree is the correct call with only 8000 behind..

Flop comes AQ6 and Ian Woodley does a double take out and is sitting pretty with 80k

I know - I am always surprised by what a grey area the chat rules are... varying from country to country, card room to card room.  In the States, I think it's OK to say what you like, and the idea of the 'moody rule' in effect a few places here is openly marvelled at.

The point that was being made, which I happen to agree with, is that in certain situations, revealing your cards is a nice succint way to collude if you're up against your friends.

Ul RED.

Yes sonopy

Can you say I've got 2-3, when you haven't?

But if it's on their backs and you do have 2-3, your hand is dead?

That was always my understanding, if you name your own card(s) and it is proved correct then your hand is dead.
Collusion would be easy if you could tell your pal you had aces when he reraised ya!

Oh and before anyone thinks I am critising Daves game in my above post I am not- just that Simon is a great heads up player when he tries. You don't finish 2nd in the world heads up championship by just being a lucky fish you know :)

but u can win a WSOP bracelet just being a lucky fish, i can prove it 8)

You lost that bracelet to me fair and square!

i was tired, i felt u needed the win for your pride :D

One of those auto-hands.  The Button raised, Anthony moved in on the big blind with  Ad Ks, the button called with his  Qd Qh and the board brought another Queen to knock him out.

Only just managed to drag myself out of bed after a late one, writing up the story of the event so far for tomorrow's edition of The Sportsman newspaper. Will be down at the casino in an hour or two.

If Reg Dog is still around, can someone pass on my commiserations. Also, if David Gent is stil lin, can someone wish him well from me.

Afternoon Jen!

I'm looking forward to this. I'm surfing the Forum, playing the $250 Freeze on Laddies, & watching the Update. Can't be bad.

Booo hiss, keep yer dead money for Blonde poker!!

I also had an attack of the confusies - it was Stephen Pearce involved in that table-chat hand-discussion discussion, not Tim Flanders - who is also still in, however.  Here's his Mrs. - getting used to seeing her go deep in these competitions.  On her left is quiet sugar afficionado Angelo Besnainou.

WEll funnily enough when i dashed off downstairs to get the final chip counts late last night, the cardroom geezers were talking about changing the structure slightly today, bring the levels back down to 500/1000 and introduce a 90 miniute clock. They reset the blinds, but didn't chaange the clock..

I havent heard any grumbles about the structure from the players today, but im sure as soon as players start dropping fast, there will be a few grumpy people floating around.

Devilfissh yesterday was furious about the structure inserting one or two 4 letter 'F' words during each sentence. I think i got aa rough idea of his opionion on it to say the least!

Having said that, after all the complaints about structure, there won't be any from here on in.  But the question remains of why Day Two should get all this lovely time and repeated blind level when Day One were whinging remains.

Ash Hussain is OUT -

A tad unfortunate to relate, his exit - somehow he'd built a 17k pot with Kieran Walsh, and moved in for about 8,000 on a Tc 9h 6s flop.  Eventually he got a call.
Ash showed:   Aspades Th
Kieran showed:   Ahrt 8h

Turn:  3c
River:  7h   Ash did a double take at the appearance of this gutshot card, as he'd been counting his double up chips, I would presume.  Just shows a hand's not over til it's over.

Peter Davidsen is also OUT - but as this was occurring simultaneously and people's eyes point in one direction at once only, I missed it.

53 players remaining.  We've been alerted to a dinner break in about half an hour's time, for an hour, which will probably be welcome to the players who went through their Day Ones snatching sandwiches in the 15 minute breaks.

*******TREVOR REARDON IS OUT********

He built his stack up to a comfortable 45,000 but unfortunatly for him Jan Heitmann (my earlier tip for the tourney) has cruely taken the lot off him.

Trevor raised in middle position to 3500 with Ac Ts. Jan called in the sb with 2h 2d and the flop came Th 4s 2s. Jan checked, Trevor bet 7000 and Jan quickly made it 16,000, Trevor smooth called.

Turn 4d. Jan checked, Trevor bet 7000 again and Jan made it 18,000 which Trevor called with 13,500 behind. River 8s , Jan put Trevor all in and Trevor dwelled for a few minutes before calling..

Trevor looks understandably gutted, its such a tough call to make because Jan is RUNNING his table and could have had ANY TWO CARDS!!!

I appear to have caught Bambos in an all-in situation, with Jon Shoreman wondering whether to call.  Usually I try to wait until a hand is over before flashing them (as it were) but sometimes the drama just needs to be caught on film...  (he didn't call, btw)

El Blondie (whose stack is a healthier 42k now, somehow) just raised in mid position to 3,800.  It passed round to Bambos on the big blind, who saw a flop:
Jc Kd 8c

Check; Dave bet out 5k and Bambos folded.  "As advertised," said Dave, showing  Ahrt Kh.  But I already knew that cos I peeked at his hand ;)

Post by: Djinn on March 25, 2006, 06:15:39 PM
Stephen Pearce, super-table-chatty stirrer of controversy, just won a pile of chips off young Ben Vinson.  On a flop of Ts 9d 3h, he pushed in for over 30k, and proceeded to talk at his young opponent ("If you call, one of us will have a lot of chips") who paid little attention, asked for a countdown, and called.

Stephen showed:  8d Js
Ben showed:  Th Kh

The turn immediately brought the Qs, and the river the irrelevant 2c so a blow for Ben.  He doubled up himself though, after taking this defeat very calmly and quietly, which is more than I can say for his opponent's victory...

Any info on the payout?

No - after the BREAK  - which is NOW -  I will read them off the TV screen which is the best I can do.  As far as we know we are playing til 27 players remain, which would mean a rather early night.  And the money doesn't start at 27, I'm pretty sure of that.

Here's postively beaming Jan Heitmann after knocking out Trevor Reardon. He and Tim Flanders are runaway chip leaders with 130,000 and 140,000 respectively.

Jan is a very solid player and by the looks of this pic, im beginning to think, is he actually human? Those eyes are freaky..

Yup, I play it every day I'm at home James - which is not that often - ever since Red-Dog cajoled me into playing it 3 weeks ago. It really is one of the best structured comps, live or online, you could wish for. I deposited $500 3 weeks back, & it's around $4k now. Oh that it would last! They also do a nice one at 0200 every night, "Graveyard Special", £40 Freeze, that plays nicely too. Add to that the $200 Freeze on blonde every night at 11, (collected $1k Thursday night) & that's my current wish list. I'd prefer to play the $100 Feeze at 10pm on Blue Square too, but I can't have Blue Square & blonde open at the same time. I can earn a crust playing those 4 comps daily. But I'm a perpetual bridesmaid, my end game is sheer poo.

Taffstour, yes, he's the business. Do I know him James? He seems to run deep in it every day. 6 left today, he got it all-in with JT against Dave Penly's KJ for a monster Pot! Fearless, the pair of them.

Poor old Ben Vinson is OUT after running into Stephen Pearce again.  Or the other way round... make up your own minds:

Stephen raises to 6,600 from late-mid position.  Small blind Ben moves in and then sits there staring straight ahead silently like he always seems to.  He's left Stephen 16,700 to call.

About five minutes of one-side-only chat later, another player at the table sort of gets tetchy and pushes him to make a decision.  He gets told, "I'm talking to him to try to get information, do you not know that system?"  I could probably have got more information talking to my cat than Silent Ben, who eventually just said, "Clock."

After muttering something that sounded like but couldn't be "Value in there.... 3 to 1" Stephen called with Qc Tc.
Ben showed Jd Jh.

Flop:  Kh 8s 6d
Turn:  6h
River:  Qd

Ben "......."
Stephen "Oh, baby <slap table> Get in There!!"

Many adjectives spring to mind, and so does buying this young player a drink who's getting "quite an introduction to tournament poker" according to Les Kerrigan.

Flushy you'll be pleased to know that Nick juust doubled up to 50,000 with 88 v 77 all in pre flop. The board came a bit scary and gave his opponent 4 to the flush but he held up for a 50,000 pot and crippled the guy, who is down to the felt..

MunichAces, He's a cracking bloke, been very co-operative with me when i've tried to count his huge chipstack! He's a great player and is definatley my tip for the top..

His buddy George Danzer, is unfortunatly, OUT

Stephen Pearce was on my table on Day 1 and was extremely annoying. Talking complete rubbish constantly, we were sat right by the television and the golf was on and he apparently was more of an expert than Bruce Harmon, thank god for headphones.
He looks a bit like Ted Forrest but plays more like Father Ted.

I got interrupted in my count by Table O'Action yet again - This time Stephen Pearce took a hit at the hands of Marc Goodwin, who can give as good as he takes...

On the flop of  Aspades 8d 9s Marc checked, Stephen bet 6,600 saying, "I have the Ace of diamonds."  Call..
Turn:  Jc  Marc checked, Stephen bet 18,800 saying, "It goes up a bit I'm afraid,"  as Marc called, saying, "I don't have the Ace of diamonds."
River:  4c (all the while Stephen shouting, "NO SPADE")  Check again.  Stephen bet 36,800.  Marc got the call ready saying, "I'm calling.  A million per cent (?).  Only question is whether to raise..."  In the end he called, and Stephen just threw his hand in the muck, while Marc showed Jd 9d.

Marc Goodwin:  180,000!

I have to agree with you here mate, he does like to talk poker at the table, but some of the stuff he comes out with reminds me of when i first started playing poker. He comes across as an amateur, but the fella has a nice stack, so fair play to him.

The fearless aggression of Jan Heitmann seems to be rubbing off on his table...

Early position raised to 4600 with blinds at 800/1600 and jan called in the cut off..

flop Ah 6h 6d. EP raiser checked and Jan bet 10,000. The poor fella dwelled and dwelled and looked to me like he was just fed up of Jan's constant aggression. He pushed for 25,000 morewith 8c 8s and Jan called instantly. Jan's cards? take a guess...

tikay - yes quite a couple of days for the Flanderses - but I was chatting to the dealer (always a good idea in the break - they Know All and See All) and it turns out that a huge hand doubled Pippa's 40k - she had  Qc Qd vs. the table big stack's  Kd Ks, but a turned Queen knocked her opponent back to 30k and shot her up over 90k.  That was the initial boost, but she's used the momentum well.

Down to 36 players and therefore 4 tables.  Very short stacked Simon Zach saw Stephen Pearce approaching and went, "Oh no..."  That table had a big old pile of chips on it, and now they're dispersed around the room.  Chip counts on their way.

And here's the small matter of how much wonga they are playing for today...

1st - £135,000
2nd - £72,500
3rd - £44,300
4th - £26,200
5th - £20,200
6th - £16,100
7th - £10,100
8th - £7,100
9th - £5,000
10th - £4,000
11-14th - £3,000
15-18th - £2,500
19-23rd - £2,000
24-24th - £1,750

I'm bemused by the fact that there's a bigger gap between 6th and 7th than 5th and 6th.

Welcome to grovesnor.

How many left and is there any chance of some chip updates please?

Also can you find out if Martin Green is still in and how many chips he has please?

With 36 players left, Martin just doubled up to 90k!

Bambos was the initial raiser to 7k, called by Jan on the button.  Martin made it another 18k to go (pretty commit-y).  Bambos passed but Jan dwelled for an age before re-raising so that it was an all-in situation.

Jan showed:   Aspades Tc
Martin showed:  Kh Ks

Flop:   Ahrt 3s 5h (aaaah went the table)
Turn:  Kc  (oooh went the table)
River: 8d

They're actually paying to 27 (same as the last money) and that was the original reasoning behind the ridiculously early planned finish tonight when it hit that number.  This would set tomorrow up to be a VERY long day indeed, and people (like El Blondie) are gently but firmly pushing for a few more levels to play out tonight, seeing as it's only 9:30.

He should maybe be more observant of playing styles. MArtin on a squeezeplay at this stage of the comp? Dubai or jac maybe but not Martin imo. Too many people use the squeezeplay line nowadays to make a lousy call and when they suck out they use it to try and justify their crap play- squeeplays are done by the camels of this world or the bigstacks- not the shorties. If I sherrif a shortstack at least I'm big enough to say I'm calling to outdraw you because I have enough chips to do so.

I didn't get too in depth...it was the wrong play, and i personallly think it was a terrible play. Hope is probably the defining word there.

But as you know Paul the younger generation of players such as Antonius, Boeken, Ivey, Mizrachi take a slightly more agressive stance than the more experienced players. I think they play to win throughout the whole tournament and are willing to gamble in order to do this. Being permanently stuck in 5th gear thoough isn't always the right thing to do. I think thaat shoowed with the Martin v Jan pot..

i doubt very much any of the players u mention would call an early position raise with 68 os for that amount of chips (4800 i think it was) from thier stacks and doubt they would make that play with A 10 in that spot.
there is a world of diffrence between being "slightly more aggressive"  and making gamble plays calling raises with junk and setting in oponents who have indicated big strength and are pretty well pot comitted, particularly when they have only put 7K into the pot and end up creating a 70K pot with an average hand.

Pascal's healthier stack came via Marc Goodwin, whose pocket 2s 2d was out-turned by Pascal's Ace-bit which spiked the Ace.  It wasn't all in preflop though.  And Marc is STILL a chip monster.  Losing the odd 30k doesn't slow him down one bit.

When they call with these hands i'm sure its not the strength of it they think about, its who their playing against and position etc etc.

I couldn't play events like this, i only play online and would be more succesful if i could hold my discipline together better. the words wall, smash and glass fit together well!!...

Its great everyone has an opinion on these kinds of hands, its what makes the forum better and more interesting. Hands like these are a long way into advamced poker and allows the new starters to get an insight into how the professionals play and their thoughts behind the hands..

Marc is indeed chip leader with 32 left.  Although he's not as far in front as his Day 1 finish.

Blinds are still 1,000 - 2,000 ante 100 but they're going up in about five minutes.  Then maybe the sudden tight slow spell will pass leading to action with occasional outbreaks.

im not sure anyone said he did . what you said is correct Iknowit he called the early position raise with 68 . - which apparently can be descibed as agressive as he intended to outplay his opponent post flop .

no doubt that is the reasoning behind all such calls but slightly diffrent to A10 phe made .

hopefully we can all learn new tricks

Marc Goodwin takes down another big old pot (100k+) after he flat called a raiser with  Ad Ks.   The raiser had  Ad Qd and put in a pretty big bet on the  Kc 2h 2c flop, but they warily checked the rest.  20k raise preflop means that Marc's chip castle just got a new wing.

Stephen Pearce is OUT -

All rather quick - one of those no-escape  Kc Kd vs.  Ac Ad hands, with no saving King.  Just three to go to the money now!

At which point the whole cardroom stands up and cheers and gives the lovely Mr Pearce one big mighty rubdown  ;applause;

Permashortstack Simon Zach just went out -

He found a perfect hand to push on the blind with:  Ahrt Kh, and got a perfect caller with  Ad Qs.
But the board came  Jd 9h 6s 6d...... Qc to knock him out 30th!  Hard luck Mr. Z.

Hefty Pot Taken down by El Blondie -

It was actually Tony Chessa who mentioned "Dave's all-in, just thought you might want to know..."  and sure enough, there he was, facing a board of Jd 4s 8c 4d.
With about 40k already in the pot, he'd pushed his last 25k in and was waiting on a Jan Heitmann dwell.  After a few minutes, a crowd gathered.  Jan passed and was shown the tantalising  Ac.  Going to ask him about that one later...

Please understand my comments were deliberately flippant because in reality I wouldn't, and never have done, given anybody a rubdown. I would however, and have done previously, stand upto table bullies who do not show their fellow players any respect such as Mr Pearce has done.

It might be slow as I was waiting on DC to come to a decision that could have been make or break - here's the situation:

Tim Flanders bet out 12k on a threeway flop of 4c Th Qh.  Dave called, and after a pause, our German friend Jan pushed all-in for 42k more.  Tim folded sharpish, but there was clearly a big decision for El Blondie, who eventually let it go.

Dave Colclough    52,000
Pascal Perrault     61,000
Jim Kerrigan        96,000
Bambos             190,000  (kind of missed where this all happened, sorry)
Mr. Ivovak          120,000
Tim Flanders       140,000

But Ben has bad news about Martin Green...

******Martin Green is OUT******

sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

He was all in pre flop 44 v Jan Heitmann's JJ...Martin said Jan had just won a big pot and raised for the umpteenth timeto 10,000 and Martin wasnt even sure Jan had looked at his cards! Martin pushed his 57,000 stack in the middle with the 44. Jan called pretty quickly and no help whatsoever from the board sent him packing in 29th place, 1 off the bubble. He's gone straight home so its one horrible drive back down to Brighton for him. :(

Hey up everyone - great update as usual. I'm four-fifths of the way through catching up on my downloaded 24 episodes and pop in to read the latest after every one.

1) The discussion about Jan and his style of play between Ben, Dubai, Ariston, Actionjack et al is exactly the type of high-level, in-depth analysis that makes this place so great - incredibly enlightening.

2) Stephen Pearce - whilst I can appreciate those of you who would wish to hold the higher moral ground upon his tournament demise, I'm firmly of the 'if you dish it out you've got to be prepared to take it' school - provided it's done in a funny and witty way, there's nothing wrong with giving him the mother of all rubdowns.

Back to the tournament, which I admit is slow at the moment (it is Bubble Time).

The Camel doubled through off Marc Goodwin a little earlier, putting him on 51,000 at the moment.
Marky147    58,000
Rumit       100,000
Ian Woodley  110,000

But Marc, what can I say.  It's deja vu all over again.

Still 28 players bubble-wary... although several short stacks have taken the plunge, they've come out with doubleups.  Like Angelo Besnainou whose  Kc Kd took him from 17k to a bit over twice that when Pippa Flanders decided to give him a spin with  Qs 8c.

Then Woody Deck got another short stack all-in with  9s Td against his  Kc Jc.  He even hit a King and a Jack on the flop, but the bubble didn't burst - the rest of the board came 7 8 6!  Six card straight pays double...

Post by: Djinn on March 26, 2006, 12:08:39 AM
And Elie Marciano is the unfortunate bubble, racing  Ac Kh against  Js Jc.  The King and Jack both hit, but the set was victorious and everyone is in the money!  £1,750, and a little profit, guaranteed for the remaining three tables.

Still not 100% on whether that will be the end of the day's play, or whether pressure from players has convinced the Vic to play on for a bit tonight to spare tomorrow being a 14-hourer.
