Title: £1500 European Poker Classic at the Vic - LIVE UPDATE - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on March 26, 2006, 03:15:34 PM
They have begun as expected, with discreet signs up warning that "There Will be Filming" and lo and behold, while the final 27 kick off, tikay wearing a TV-producer hat has appeared and is chatting to other Televisual types.

Good luck El Blondie et. al....!

Early Double Up For DC News Now -

There was a certain Ac Kc which doubled through 8c Tc to around 80k, and El Blondie is consolidating his lead, claiming to be around six figures at this early stage.  :)

Chip Leader Mr. Cool just sauntered in - I think several people might have failed to notice those pesky clocks skipping that hour last night...

Blinds 2,000 - 4,000 so I doubt his eyesight is keen enough to have noticed any damage to his stack...

Good luck to DC and well done making the money.

Anyone want to do their top 3 finish?

1.Marc Goodwin
2.Kevin O'Connell
3.Jim Kerrigan

and 1st out sadly i think will be Woody Deck . Think he will push early to double up and unless he hits will be out.

tikay was halfway through writing this up when I snatched my computer back.  Oh, I'm such a glory stealer...

Camel doubles up with Qh Qd - on an 8 5 4 board he got a caller with 7c Tc but no straight materialised and Keith is up to 60,000...

She's a quietly confident player and I reckon she could make the final... her table isn't an easy ride though - Pascal Perrault, John Kabbaj, chipped up Simon Randall...

Yes the hour's loss has kind of messed up a couple of tardy players, and poor old Sunday.  Expect him in 25 minutes...

I am trying to catch his story but there is quite a crowd now around the Rope... I think he ran into Kings.  Yes, yes he did, R. Mulla had the Kings, and he was moving with  Ac 3c.

Lateish, like Pascal Perrault, whose stack is suffering somewhat due, most likely, to that pesky Daylight Savings Reversal or whatever happened last night.

Rumit Is Felted (I think that's the first time I've manage to use that word) by Jan Heitmann -

Jan raised in early position to 12k, Rumit moved in for a further 64,000 from the cut-off.  A longer dwell ensued than you might have expected before he called with his Qd Qs.
Rumit had Ts Th, and said, "I'm in big trouble now..."  And so he was, as the board of  Aspades 2c 8s Kc  Ahrt helped no one.  Down to 4k.... but you never know (remember Trevor Reardon).

Good news for the Marky147 Mark Herron fans.....GREAT news in fact

Firstly he doubled up with  6c Ac vs Pascal Perrault with  3s 3d...that pot was 100k.

Then the very next hand he does a double take out on the 'on tilt' Pascal Perrault and the sugar lump man Angelo Baisnainov.

somehow the chips got in pre flop

Mark -  3d 3h
Pascal -  Ks Jh
Angelo -  Ac Jc

the flop came a semi-scary  Ts 3s 4s leaving the only threat being pascal with his K high flush draw.

The turn and river both drew blanks and Mark is now in fantastic shape, constantly exclaiming, "i need to win this, cos my old man will send me to the Bellagio for a month!"

Jim Kerrigan is on around 70k.  Condition: stable.

Thanks Jen.

My tips for the top 3 are

1) Marc Goodwin
2) Camel
3) Kerrigan (He may be short stacked, but recently he's been getting a lot of practice at grinding it out with short stacks in the latter stages of big comps. I think he will final and may well do enough to make it to the business end of the day).

Mark Herron can do no wrong at the moment!

he just knocked shortstack Simon Randall out, it was folded round to Simon in the sb who moved in for 17,000 with Kd 3c. Mark weighed up the odds and made the correct call with Qh 9h.

flop 8c 2c 2d

turn 7h

river Qd - BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

3 players elimated at the hands of Marky147 in the space of 5 hands. AMAZING!

Here's a rather intense looking Mr. Mulla and Marc Goodwin in profile.

Marc just took an interesting pot off Dave - they were small blind/big blind and Marc raised 10k. called by Dave.  The flop:  A 9 6.  Check-check.
Turn: 4.  Marc checks, Dave bets 10k, Marc calls.
River: 7.  Marc bets out a big 35k.  After a very long think, Dave calls with J9, which he found to have been rivered by Marc's 6 7!  Down to 30k...

Dave just took a hit...

folded to him on the small blind he raises to 18,000. Jim Kerrigan in the bb says i don't think so and instantly comes over the top which would put Dave all in, he passed, with a very agonising look on his face..

Ben has collected totally up to the minute counts for you all!  And here they are...

Jan Heitmann is chip leader with a massive 320,000
Camel             142,500
Jeffrey Rogers   142,500
P. Evdokiou        38,500
Keir Fitzgibbon    86,000
Tim Flanders     243,000
Ian Woodley      150,000
Marc Goodwin    221,000
El Blondie          49,500
Jim Kerrigan       88,000

stop there for a minute - Reyaaz Mulla is OUT in 19th place after running into Ian Woodley's Kings.  TABLE BREAK, and we no longer know whose stack is whose... the counts above are correct, however.

**********Jim Kerrigan is OUT**********

Kevin o' Connell raises on the button to 3 x bb, quite steal like....and Jim Kerrigan moves in with As 7s in the sb.

Kev counts his chips out and calls reasonably quickly and flips over the monster that is Ah Jh

The board came with an ace,  but no 7 and Jim Kerrigan is out in 18th place winning £2,500.

Double Up For Dave:

The Camel raised to 18,000 in mid position, and when Dave put his whole 35k in, there was an autocall moment - but Dave's Ac Qc was in better shape than he might have thought against Keith's Qh 7h!  No sevens or flush, and DC's back on 70+k.  He certainly is living on the edge...

He's the short stack now, just under 50k.  But then again, he's never exactly been chip monster and he's still here...

ok guys, with John Kabbaj and Jan Heitmann the only two guys on both the tables raising theres not much we can report on. Only El Blondie has had the courage to come over the top of Jan in the last half hour...

caption competition time...

and remember if you can include Pascal in the background that would be even funnier! :)

Keir Fitzgibbon is OUT in 17th place (wins £2,500)

It was the Camel who sealed his fate with  Ahrt Ks vs.  Ad Qh on an all-rag board.  He only narrowly covered his opponent, but covered he was and made his exit.  Sorry to his friends who just signed up as 'Keir Fitzgibbon'!  Better luck to him next time...

Dave is coping with Jan very well...

Jan made a suspect limp in middle position for 12,000, folded to Dave in the bb who put just over half is stack in and raised to 50,000. Im not sure what either of them had but Dave let out a brief "phew" when Jan passed!

Chippy counts on their way

I bring you, possibly the most fascinating hand of the tourament so far. I would like to hear people's opinions on this for sure...

its folded round to Jan in the sb who makes it up and Nik Depala in the bb checks. blinds are 6000/12000, Jan is playing well over 300,000. While Nick is playing 140,000.

flop  5s 6s 2d. Jan fires out 22,000 and Nik calls.

turn a scary Ks Jan now fires out 40,000 and after a brief dwell up Nik calls again.

river a kinda scary 9c. Jan now bets out 100,000 which would put Nik all in.

Nik dwells for ages and ages and ages before passing Kh 6h face up. Jan? ah just the usual Tc 4c. Nik looks like hes been punched in the stomach and rightly so. incredible sstuff from Jan Heitmann.

your opinions would be very much welcome guys! I'm still a bit baffled to say the least

Dave Colclough is rubbing salt into the wounds of poor Nik Depala. He just pullled off a classic stop and go move calling Nik Depalas cut off raise and moving in blind on the flop, well im convinced he didn't look at the flop of T93. Nik passed quickly and i don't think its gona be long before its get too much for the short stacked young fella

There are a fewof us who think he had to push!!  After flat calling with top pair.  Ok there is a flush out there but really does he think Jan has it??

For me its a push and a few other sitting in theCin Cin say thesame.

That said its why we're sittting here and not playing!!  :D

The two shortest stacks take the plunge - P. Evdokiou taking his Ks Qh against Nik Depala's Td Jd.  Or it may have been the other way around, sorry.  In any case, he was left with a bowl of rice, which went in (and out) immediately.  So 15th place for young Nik Depala, and £2,500.

The fold is not the problem I would have thought as he is clueless as to where he was in the hand. The problem was that he never asked the question to find out. A decent position raise on the flop would have in order and he could have taken it down there.

yes it looks very impressive when it works but not so good when it doesnt and you never know if its going to work until it is too late . But at least you look good when it does work

Cant see any reason to raise against a lunatic. Particularly given the turn card.

Yeah but when he flopped top pair why allow the next cheap card? He didn't know whether the guy was drawing had two over that could have paired anything really. He just could have avoided an unnecessary clash, particularly as he was not the one with the play chips. If he was the big stack I agree about letting him 'donk' them off, but playing 140k he could have had a nice danger free increase and put Jan in hisd place for the next bb.

P Evdokiou doubles up to 180,000.

Jan raised in early position to 30,000 and P Evdokiou raised him in for another 50,000 to call from the sb.

Jan dwelled for the gathering spectators, before calling with Jh 9d !

Evdokiou had As 8s and the board came down

Qh 4s 2c  turn Td (!!!) and the river, a delightful Ac :)

Colin Kennedy doubles up to a new chip high of over 160k... His opponent's  Ac Kd hit the  Aspades flop, but not as well as Kennedy's  Ad Ahrt!

Could the quiet one be making his move now that his stack is of threatening proportions?

This means that I'll be playing the 7pm tourney at 8pm, three glasses of wine ahead of normal (sic) or was that hic ?

The chips certainly are moving on Table Cool -

Prior to that doubleup, it was Mark Herron who took a huge pot from Raymond Nicholas with  Ahrt Kh vs Ad Jd.  Puts the young lad over 300,000 according to the eagle-eyed reporters from A World Of Poker - was wondering what had happened to shift the balance so dramatically.  You just can't watch it all.

I think its a standard trap call him down once the turn is the King. No need to raise at any point against a lunatic. Just sit back and let him donk them all off.

I agree

The fold is not the problem I would have thought as he is clueless as to where he was in the hand. The problem was that he never asked the question to find out. A decent position raise on the flop would have in order and he could have taken it down there.

How can he 'find out' when any raise commits him to the pot, as Dubai says here:

Cant see any reason to raise against a lunatic. Particularly given the turn card.

No point to raise against someone who will fire 3 bullets with T hi.....

Whatever people might think of Jan's play, it has to be said that the other players on his table are wary (unsurprising given his unpredictability regarding calling) and trying to out-think the chipped up German.  There was an interesting moment when tikay pointed out that Dave was surely going to raise Jan's big blind.

"Dave knows he's liable to go for it."  Indeed - and, unexpectedly, Jan passed quickly.  It looks like there's some of that "He knows that I know that he's likely to act in this way, so I'll take advantage of it in that way" kind of stuff going on.  You know what I mean.

He's been getting quite a bit of luck against Marc Goodwin (his was the AK in that hand) - earlier he was just moving in on Marc's big blind from the small blind every time, and Marc eventually caught his Jc Qd out with Ac 8h... but he escaped by spiking the Queen.

My mistake obviously he told everyone he had ten high and would keep betting!!!!

He was the shorter stack, it was a nice pot and he ended up with a tough decision for his tournament life that he passed and gave away 70k.

Well in that case why bother calling with the 6 on the flop or the king on the turn, if he was not going to shove his money in against a maniac with 2 pair whats he going to shove it in with.  If he was worried about the flush, a raise may give you info from some facial tell, or a hand stalling ove the chips, its not all betting patterns.

Had it been me against this nutter, I would have chucked them in.

No one is disputing this unless he was scared of the unlikely flush draw bet. The criticism was why not raise the flop to avoid any potential heartache? (at that stage he didn't know the K was coming!)

Maybe he wanted to take a turn before commiting, see if it slows down the maniac and also see if no spade comes, if he raises the flop and gets set in, does he call?

Maybe he called, hoping for a non-spade on the turn? Thought that he only had a pair of sixes?

I think the whole of the hand is indicative of the fact that Nik wasn't thinking clearly - he had no plan for the player or the hand. Therefore dissecting his play is a bit pointless as you're not going to be able to tell him anything he didn't work out for himself the moment he saw Jan's hand.

Ben was misinformed.

Well nice to see that Kev hasn't been abusing my good (?) name on the Forum - he's getting another nice cup of tea for his diligent efforts.

Since I can see Dave being interviewed, I reckon that play has yet to begin again.  After waiting for 15 minutes for the chef to appear downstairs, we ran down the road and ate steaks. Mmmmm, steaks.

OK, they're resat - back to work.  Hope you're sitting comfortably, as shorter blinds or no shorter blinds, this will probably be a long night.

Blinds will be 8k - 16k, ante 500.

Jeffrey Rogers is OUT in 14th place, winning £3,000

Time was running out, with the blinds suddenly rather large, and when Jan raised (again) he pushed in on the button and eventually got called.
Jeffrey showed:  7s 7h
Jan showed:  Th Tc

The board brought no set for Jeff, but nearly a flush for Jan who didn't need it anyway and he busts yet another player, consolidating his chip lead.

********Ian Woodley is OUT in 13th Place Picking up £3,000*********

with blinds now at 8000/16000 players are getting busy and Ian Woodley is our latest casualty,

It was folded to Dave Colclough on the button who made a standard raise to 45,000

Ian pushed for 20,000 more for dave to call, Dave called quickly and showed Ah Jc

Ian - Ks Qs

flop came in this order 8s 6s (oh no) 8h  turn Ac  river 4c and Dave is now beaming with delight, and a stack of just over 300,000

Keith 'The Camel' Hawkins is OUT in 12th place, winning £3,000

He made a move on Jan's big blind while he still had enough chips to make it work - with 4h 5h.  But Marc Goodwin on his left spotted it and moved in over the top with Qd Kh.

The board brought the 4s on the river, but with the board reading Ac 3s Kc x only a 2 would have saved the Camel.  Well played after a long few days...

Great Forum thanks for all the informations.

I have to say that Sunday8pm has been a staunch supporter of Jan all the way through, and his controversial yet totally well-mannered style of play is only creating the right sort of debate.  Good luck to him.

Marc Goodwin is OUT in 11th place, winning £3,000

Marc raised two off the button with  Ahrt Jc (as you do), and when Tim Flanders pushed his whole stack iin on the big blind, he called.  Big pot.

Tim's hand:  8h 8d

Flop:  7d  Aspades 8s  (so briefly a good reaction then a sigh as the third card of the flop hit from Marc)
Turn and river:   Kh Kc

Full house for Tim and Marc is a bit disappointed, as you can imagine.  "At best we're going on a fifty-fifty for 200k..." he muses.  "It cost me - just finishing ninth puts me at European rankings number One."

Next time, Mr. Cool.

We're Hand For Hand...

Biggest action at the moment - Dave raises to 50k from the cutoff, and big blind Jan re-raises a hefty amount (c.100k).  Dave wasn't prepared to tangle with him right then, and we reckon that discretion is sometimes the better part of valour.  Basically, Jan sometimes gets real hands too!

Pavlo Iacovou (we've been calling him Evdokiou as that's what he's down as here at the Vic) is the Bubble, 10th place, winning £4,000

Dave was initially in the threeway preflop action, but it was Tim Flanders who took on the all-in on the J 8 5 flop with his flopped set of Fives.  Pavlo had  Ks 8d, but that was no good and the final nine are now taking a deep breath and heading for the FINAL TABLE!

Here's the seat order, for the final.  Proper totally accurate counts are being made in the break, so the guesstimates I made are a bit obsolete.  Next time I'll just have a cup of tea and wait for someone else to do it.  ;)

1.  Dave Colclough
2.  Mark Herron
3.  Colin Kennedy
4.  Tim Flanders
5.  John Kabbaj
6.  Raymond Nicholas
7.  Bambos
8.  Kevin O'Connell
9.  Jan Heitmann

The crowds alerted Kev to "Action!" and DC was waiting to see if Tim would call, with the board  Aspades Ks Qh  Ac 6h.  He did, and Dave showed a winning  Ad Tc.  Healthy stack now, to say the least.   ;cheerleader;

It was Bambos again, on a roll, this time with  Ac Qs who took out Mr. Kennedy's  Ac Jc.  All in preflop, and not quite the clash we saw coming, but dramatic nonetheless.

Ben bokked him with his picture.

And Bambos has rocketed up in chips (near 500k) at this late stage.  Well, the final table is the right time to do it..

You may be surprised that the action is seemingly nonstop - but in fact it's only the half-millionnaires who can breathe relatively easily - the blinds are now 10k - 20k with a 500 ante.

Some seats have appeared for spectators, but whenever there is action everyone just stands up and rushes the rope, so I've found the best vantage point to be standing on one of their vacant chairs.  Going to take a pic from that angle so you can see what I mean.

Interesting to see that Sunday night tourney at Stars 3 years ago had a $60k prize pool and now all the Sunday tourneys irrespective of buyin are guaranteed $1million. Lets hope I can win one in 3 years time!

John Kabbaj doubles up,

John moves in for 87,000 in the cut-off with 9s 7s and is called VERY quickly by Kev o' Connell in the bb with  Aspades Kh

board came Tc 2c 2d turn 9c  river Ts.

a crippler for Kev who is now struggling on just short of 100,000

Huge hand just builds up Jan again, while putting Bambos right down to the felt...

Bambos raised 100k, Jan pushed it all in and Bambos called with  Aspades Jc, perhaps because of who it was he was up against.
But Jan had Th Tc

The board:  6h 3d 7s 3s 9c.

So with less than 30k, Bambos is going to have to just chuck them in and hope to double up in the next couple of hands.

As expected, Bambos made his last moves in an effort to regain chips.  His first attempt succeeded with  Ahrt 2d, which blind Tim Flanders called with what turned out to be Jd 4d.

Then again, but this time Kevin O'Connell moved in over the top with  Ahrt Ts, and Bambos' Ks 3s was no good, especially with an Ace appearing on the flop.

So Bambos is the 8th place finisher, winning £7,100

Kev o' Connell has doubled up through El Blondie,

Kev made his move on the button with 9c 9h

Dave called in the BB with Ac Jh

and the flop was a sigh of relief for Kev when it came 3d 9d 8h the turn 8s sealed it.

The pot was huge, around 400,000 and now Dave finds himself in a bit of a sticky situation...

Tim Flanders is OUT

he had 33k left and had 10k of it invested in the sb so he decided to chance it with 53.

Kev o Connells A7 hit an ace on the turn and left Tim drawing dead.

Much praise to The Flanders husband and wife partnership who produced a great display during the tournament.

Having said that, the fearless Jan was just pushed off his button raise by small blind Colclough moving all-in.  tikay mentioned (correctly, it seems) that Jan seems a little warier of El Blondie than his other opponents - I haven't seen him lay down hands to many.  But it could just be that he's raising with the kind of filth you just can't call a re-raise with every time he's against him!

He just won quite a few off Kevin - after raising 100k preflop, Kevin called and then they did this:
Flop: K Q 4   check-check
Turn: Q    check-check
River:  5  check.  Dave bet 120k, and after a long think, Kevin called.  Dave turned over  Kc Qh!  That was around a half mil right there in that pot...

OK they are back.  tikay is confused - and we're in the same boat.  The blinds were just 15,000- 30,000 with a 500 ante, and they are going to be that AGAIN for an hour.  Who knows.  It seems like they're plenty big enough right now, though, for the chips in play.  Would be a shame for these guys to have to play a crapshoot after so much great poker.

Raymond Nicholas moved in for around 140k on the button.  Big blind Jan thought for a while before calling with 7s 7c.  Ray had Ad Js.  The Ace hit the flop, a reprieve for Ray, and Jan loses a stack.  Just one, mind.

Small blind vs. Big blind news now - Jan bet 30k on the flop, called by Dave, then there was no betting from Jan or Dave Colclough all the way til the river, when the board had come Q A A 9 Q.  Dave bet 60,000, and after a while, Jan called the bluff (it was  5h 7h!  Seen that before...) with  Ks Jh.  So, he must have reasoned he was either in front, or behind (so says guru tikay).  In any case, he just got back a bit of what he lost to Raymond.

Wow it's all happening so Fast!  It was Kabbaj again - he's working his way back into contention with back to back eliminations.  Mark made his last stand with A4, but John's 99 was good.

Raymond Nicholas is OUT in 6th raking in £16,100

John Kabbaj raised to 130,000 utg and Raymond instantly moved in over the top for 160,000 more.

John only had around 210,000 back, and was BB next hand, so after a very long dwell up, called.

John - 7c 7d
Raymond - Ah Qc

flop came a very good looking Ts 8s 9s for John

turn - 4h

river 5h

John now well chipped up with well over 600,000

George has volunteered info on Jan's hands (wow I can just sit on my leather sofa and he reports!) - Jan just raised to 100k preflop, and got a huge re-raise from John Kabbaj, to which he had to pass.  Looks like when John has chips, the bully-mode switch gets thrown...

Here's dedicated poker follower and Bluesquare trophy-dropper extraordinaire Jon Raab.  In this pic he looks a bit like Raymond's Secret Service bodyguard.

Kevin O' Connell is OUT taking home £26,200

Dave Colcough was the fortunate man to knock Kev out.

Cards played themselves here, Dave moved in on the button with 8c 8s and had Kev just covered.

Kev beat him to the pot with  Ahrt Kd and the board came down a very bleak.

7c 5h 4c turn 9h river 2d

Great double up for El Blondie and its very tight now between Jan Heitmann, Dave Colclough and John Kabbaj who has the slight advantage with an extra 'wing on his castle'. Damn i love that saying!

Bad news for the Blonde camp.

Jan just doubled up through Dave, who holds only 7.5 pink chips left which is 75,000

Jan limps the sb, Dave bets 80,00 more and Jan does the camera star dwell up before calling saying "i still want to play flops"

Flop is 8h Qc Aspades and Jan checks.

Dave moves all in for 400,000 and Jan dwells for another lifetime before calling with Qd Tc.

Dave taps the table and says "nice hand" before flipping over 4c 4s

No miracle for Dave and he is left clinging on, in fact he's all in now against Jan for his remaining 75,000....

And our Blondie is OUT in 3rd place, winning £44,300

There was no choice with double the big blind but to throw it in against small blind Jan with 7c 9h.  Jan's Jd 4d spiked a four for good measure and the same person responsible for decimating his chips finishes him off.

Very well played, from your (unbiased, no, seriously, we watch a lot of this) update team  ;cheerleader; ;cheerleader; ;cheerleader; ;cheerleader;

Incidentally, on the end of this hand George relates that Jan showed an Ace-high straight with JQ while John actually called the bet (not all-in) on the river with his KQ.  It's kind of hard to tell from behind two rows of people's heads.  Sorry.

John doubles up:

John moved in on the turn with the board: 4s  Ad Ac 8d.  Jan called with Kh 7d.  John's 4h 6h was good, and stayed good!

George says, "Bad call, in the opinion of George."  :)

Still the chip leader though.  They're clearly not scared to whack their chips in - at least sparks are flying on this final.

John takes down a big pot - 460k or thereabouts.

He raised from the big blind, creating a 300k pot preflop.
The flop:  7c 6h 9h

John checked, Jan bet 160k and John check-raised all-in.  Jan passed almost before John's chips crossed the line.  It appears there is a home advantage... but "Come on John" sounds a bit like "Come on Jan" so I hope he doesn't feel too left out.

Cheers for the updates Jen and Ben and for picking 2 of the final 3.

Also excellent play by DC who must be pleased with his finish after starting so low on chips.

Just wanted to pipe in and say thanks for all the hard work with the updates. I was actively checking till the early hours of the morning when I decided I needed to get some sleep, and I checked the results first thing this morning.

Good work all - look forward to your coverage next time.
