1  Poker Forums / The Rail / RIP David “Chihuahua” Hall on: November 15, 2022, 09:22:26 PM
Those of you that played poker in Sheffield over the last 20-30 years may well remember Chihuahua. Unfortunately he passed away in the last few days.

Proper old school character who was still playing late night dealers choice at Naps Owlerton until recently.

Lovely bloke. Will be missed. RIP.

I find the whole crypto world rather baffling (perhaps I’m just getting old and I’m a bit ignorant).

Couldn’t central banks launch their own crypto currencies and kill the market ?
..

They could - and they would - if it was worth it

The market cap for all cryptocurrencies has doubled to nearly 2 trillion dollars from 2020 to 2021

The liquidity of the "normal" currency market is about 40 trillion dollars

I'd guess over 99% of the people buying cryptocurrency are just buying it as a speculative instrument so the actual demand for it is a fraction of that.

EDIT: if it wasn't clear part of my point was that if a central bank launched a stable cryptocurrency - very few people would buy it, because nearly all of them are buying it for speculation. And if the central banks launched a cryptocurrency which wasn't stable - then what would be the point? Central banks aren't concerned with just creating speculative financial instruments.

That makes a lot of sense.

It seems to me that almost everyone buys crypto as a pure speculatory “investment” even though it’s instrinsic value is built on sand.

And of course, crypto has been a favoured financial facility for large scale criminal activity.

I might be missing something but the use of crypto as a currency for of payment for goods and services is almost non existence in 99.999% of transactions.

It feels more honest to say, its just a speculative punt for almost everyone who buys it.

I know people buying crypto like it because it is not part of the traditional establishment but a central bank back crypto currency would at least carry some substance/security behind it ?

Crypto seems to be built purely on punters trust, that seems like a dangerous concept in theory.

I have friends who take small punts and try to get in at seed level on new issues hoping one becomes popular and takes off. This really does look like a pure speculative tool where some people further up the purchase time line are going to get badly burnt financially.

Perhaps I am just misunderstanding those new launches of coins but they really do look like ponzi schemes.

Sensible article from BBC.

I think Whitty mentioned supporting the decision as it’s better to have an exit wave in the summer than in the autumn/winter.

Good old Cummings.

Boris didn’t sack him after Barnard Castle when it was clear he should have. Resisted enormous political pressure then sees Cummings go for the jugular.

No loyalty in politics.

It was interesting to watch an interview with William Hague recently when he said that the Government has actually returned to running a lot more smoothly since Cummings left.

Basically said Cummings doesn’t have a clue on how Government works day to day.

Heart says FA Cup

Head/Money says top 4

All about the ££££££££ now unfortunately. Actually winning something seems more and more irrelevant.

Could you imagine if betting companies had to answer to their 'fans' ie customers who lose and donate to them (which should happen in 99% of punters) in business why do 'fans' even have a say in how businesses that they have no ownership % at all think they have a say?   The whole thing has always amazed me but post covid the fans have even less say as owners have realised 'old school' fans who attend games don't really make much difference to the modern day business model.   It is all tv stream revenue.

I guess it’s twofold.

If Paddy Power piss off a punter they can bet with other bookies. Fans don’t change clubs.

And I suppose it’s a community thing. Clubs make up part of the fabric of our communities and history, more than just a business.   No one gives a shit about a bookie.

Comparing apples and pears.

Love being in a minority that celebrates seeing young people outdoors enjoying themselves. Cant believe whats happened to people. This doesnt make me a covid denier,  anti vaxxer,  or murderer. Just makes me completely normal and the rest of the country need to be more like me tbf.

The council removed 7 tonnes of waste this morning.

Litter covered the whole of the grass which is a very large area.

The war memorial to the American airmen was vandalised.

Arrests made for fights.

Fire brigade called to put fires out.

Call me an old fart but it was bang out of order.

No argument from me on any of that of course but peoples behaviour very much unrelated to ridiculous laws about being outside in groups and barred from any form of entertainment for way longer than is required. One of the issues when driven by politics and dates rather than data which is where we are today in my view.

I wouldnt try and make any case for it being acceptable but neither is it particularly surprising.

I said to my wife earlier, it’s a tinderbox. Groups of youths segregated on racial groups down there is a dangerous mix when you add alcohol and drugs.

I have heard it is now being reported that an 18 year old girl was raped in a silver Mercedes at 11.30 by a group of Asian guys. I don’t know if that is true but I wouldn’t be surprised.

That's a lot of specific information. No names and addresses? :-/

BBC are reporting it. Mercedes at 11.30 with an Asian suspect.

Anyone would think you thought I was making it up :-/
