ok so why doesn't somebody put forward a petition to government asking them to change the gambling legistlations eg poker room license £5k to run and can charge a rake??
What about meeting all the regulations? i'm sure all the poker forums together united could get a lot of signatures to be passed thru parliament
Note to Flushy Under the existing 1985 law in N. Ireland, we are allowed to play for a maximum of £4, yes four pounds, with a max rake to the house of 60 pence. There are no legal casinos and no gaming board. Are these the regulations you want us to meet?

Hi guys Good job. Would you please wish the esteemed Mr. Flood all the best from me and tell him that I hope he is in a position to buy the drinks next weekend when he defends his Scottish title. He seems to come good at this time of year. It must be the summer sun warming up those weary old bones!

Headcase start up another thread with the subject "Online Petition Cavendish Club" so that as many Blondites can see and support the petition. I'm gobsmacked by this like many and was looking forward to a trip there in the spring. Everything we heard about the place was positive and upbeat, best of luck!
Good idea. will do just that.

If the judge said it was a game of chance and skill, does this mean that it isn't EQUAL chance? Therefore surely it could be legal but taxable? Don't know how it works in NI could someone explain their laws and the reason it got raided. Doesn't NI come under British Law?
Good question. Northern Ireland has been ruled directly by Westminster for most of the last 35 years. However, historically, it has its own laws from the period 1921 to 1972, approximately. There have never been any casinos in N.I. Therefore, there has never been any Gaming Commission or Board here either. No casinos = no board. No board = no casinos. Time for a re-think perhaps.

In a court case today Sean Murphy, owner of the Cavendish Club, managed to win his arguement for the return of the poker players money, which the police wanted to retain under the Proceeds of Crime Act. In a two hour arguement with the resident magistrate over the nature of the game of poker, he lost his arguement that poker was a game of skill. The police case was that poker was purely a game of chance. This argument was quashed, but the magistrate ruled that it was a game of chance and skill. Sadly this means that poker is effectively illegal in Northern Ireland. The killjoys are in the ascendancy. The ruling can be appealed and Sean is considering calling a meeting of all interested parties to see what the next step could possibly be. In the meantime, one club, The Kingsway in Belfast has already announced a temporary (?) closure. A sad day for Northern Irish poker. People are not going to stop playing poker because of this ruling so now they will be driven underground or into the arms of the Internet poker sites. So games of chance are illegal? Will the Government now withdraw the National Lottery from Northern Ireland?

Hey Ironside, I don,t recall hearing that the met arrived mob handed to shut down the Gutshot. Court case fine. Riot squad, no thank you. As regards N.I. Assembly, unfortunately our political reps cannot agree to sit down together, thus everything is being run by junior ministers sent over from London. This has been the case for the last couple of years and seems to be the case for the forseeable future.

Hi all, I have submitted an article on this subject to Blonde Poker, among others, which I hope will be posted on the site shortly. I was playing in the club when the police arrived. I will do my best to answer, or pass on any questions you may have on the rather grey area of the law regarding poker in N. Ireland. The club may or may not be legal, but I cannot agree with the way the police handled the situation, including seizing the players money in the form of the prize fund. Do we, the players, really deserve to have our money seized just because we like a game of poker among consenting adults, in a private place?
