Why can't we flat?

Pretty interesting question.

The reason I liked jamming>flatting>folding is it's just easier to play this way IMO, 77 has a lot of raw equity and has bad visibility in this kind of pot post flop. Also, without any knowledge of Villain 1's tendencies in this spot post-flop I thought putting nearly 30% of my stack with no idea how to continue didn't feel good? I always play these spots as a jam to save the headache tbh lol.

You think flatting>jamming? Would you mind going into more detail please dude?

I think the range that you think the ISO guy will call off with when you jam is too wide, but w/e that's good for you.

Yeah, it might be slightly light. However, I'm just basing this range on the fact that Villain 1 said he had ATo and was going to snap call my all in if SB folded. Also, the very juicy pot odds he was offered and the fact that even though It's a reasonable spot to trap with monsters, my range still looks pretty capped and in fairness, it is. I'd like to think I'd be trapping with AA here close to 100% of the time but I'm certain with our dynamic I'm still 3bet-calling 99+, AQ+. Also with his stack it still leaves him 35BBs if he calls and loses, which does damage his utility but not critically and the benefit of calling and winning is a huge stack.

And yeah villain could assume we have some traps in our range because of this dynamic, I still think he opens the same range and has a pretty profitable ISO to 11.8k with basically all of that range, this is obv just the instinct I had at the time though.

This was DAY1B, there was another day 1 sure but that wouldn't affect my decision making process in any way.

Cheers for the feedback though Statman, appreciate it.

My opinion is this...

CO is good, obv this is tough when you're in a live MTT but guessing the villains ranges is the key factor here IMO.

My guess was he was opening something like this..

22+,A2s+,K2s+,Q8s+,J8s+,T8s+,98s,87s,76s,A2o+,K8o+,QTo+,JTo    and IMO that's still pretty tight but w/e the BB is short and all that jazz so some people don't like raising too wide.

Hero is me.

My thoughts at the time we're that it's a really good spot to go after Villain 3's stack and I estimated that Villain 1 being a good aggressive player would realise his range plays extremely well vs Villain 3's 4BB all in range which will be SUPER wide and look to ISO him close to 100% with Hero's and Villain 2's Dead money when we fold making his price even better.

Now if people think this range is a mistake and if indeed Villain 1 doesn't see the hand like I would and isn't looking to ISO the BB VERY wide, this jam will obviously become less and less good.

I think 77 is going to show a reasonable chip EV profit as a jam here and I'm basically just looking to exploit Villain 1's intention to ISO Villain 3's stack very wide.

Even with the price he's getting he's not going to call off that whole range and will fold a reasonable amount of the time.

Guessing he will call off like 22+,A9s+,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,ATo+,KQo

And if he does go with this range 77 plays fine vs this calling range (49.82%equity), which will include some hands we even dominate and the vast majority of hands we Flip vs. Also we are netting a very profitable situation when he folds and we go heads up vs Villain 3.

Finally Villain 2 may call off sometimes but my estimation at the time would be anything that crushes 77 in his range barring    or maybe 99??? would 3bet pre. So I wasn't worried about him. Because that's a very small portion of his range.

I would love to hear people's feedback on this if you think any of my estimations on villains ranges or my calculations are wrong or if you see any error in my logic maybe? Thanks peeps.

Live MTT UKPC Main event.

£1100 buy in

Day 1B-

blinds 600-1200/200

Hero stack 42,600

Villain 1 Stack ~80,000

Villain 2 Stack ~50,000

Villain 3 Stack 5,100

Hero is seen as active and aggressive but not way OOL at all.

Villain 1 is a very active and aggressive good PRO. Been caught bluffing multiple times and previously been active 3-betting and 4-betting without showdown.

Villain 2 is on the tightish side but not nitty. Capable of 3-bet bluffing after seeing his hands at showdown previously.

Villain 3 has just lost a huge pot the previous hand and is probably pretty tilted being down to 4BBs on the BB, but is a good thinking player nonetheless.

Villain 1 opens CO to 2,500

Hero flats BTN with

Villain 2 flats SB 2,500

Villain 3 slides his remaining 3,900 over the line after a brief 10 sec pause, so Re-raises to 5,100 ALL IN

Villain 1 tanks a short while before Raising to 11,800

HERO is ALL IN 42,600.

Line check please? Thoughts?

So 4B/fold is best? Only if Tim calls the 4bet with JJ and AK? If not call is best?

It was just a tough spot and I went with the play I knew was +EV as I didn't want to call or 4bet fold such a strong hand. So is my total thought process wrong there? Or should I say which are the parts that are flawed?

Thanks peeps.

Firstly, will just say that opponent 2 was Tim Chung, think most people ITT know this by now anyway.

I decided to Jam in this spot after a pretty decent tank and this is why I came to this conclusion, hopefully you can all say which play would have been better and why my thought process and choice in this hand was wrong so I can learn from it. Pretty sure I haven't been in a spot like this before with such a big chip lead and still trying to learn the various ICM situations as quickly as possible.

My initial thought was to give both players a range.

Opponent 1 I thought was pretty capped, literally thought this exact player would 3bet QQ+ 100%. So pairs like maybe 55-JJ suited broadways, AQ/AJ etc. Going to put AK in his range too.

Thought Tim's range would be JJ+/AK (maybe TT) for value and gave him some 3bet squeeze's, so lets say AJo/KQo, the hand's I'd probably choose (right or wrong) to squeeze with in this spot. Even though I thought he wouldn't be going nuts here, it felt like a really good spot to squeeze being able to put a decent amount of pressure on both me and especially opponent 1 being IP in the hand. Just for the record, in years past I think Tim would have a much wider 3bet range but my read here was that he wouldn't be getting super OOL here but would have some bluffs because it's a great spot and I'm sure he would like to be kind of balanced vs me.

Next I saw that the pot was at ~14BBs and both stacks had ~55BBs. Tim having like ~50BBs back after his 6.5bbs 3bet.

Now Is the time I think my thought process might be flawed and would like feedback on. I expected opponent 1 being passive to call a jam 0% of the time.

Given the fact that Opponent 1 NEVER has AA/KK and we block Tim form having some combos of AA/KK and the fact we have such a strong hand, if we rip we can pick up 14BBs a pretty high% of the time and even put real ICM pressure on Tim to fold AK/JJ or maybe even QQ.

Where as 4bet calling might induce Tim to shove AK/QQ/JJ and we have to get into a flip I didn't want to take obv. 4bet folding Akcc I thought would be really bad.
So in my head I completely ruled out any kind of 4bet and it was call or Jam.

So by ripping I was trying to put the pressure back on him to even maybe have him fold some value hands high up in his range, and if he did have the miracle KK (34% equity) or AA (12% equity) and called it's not like we are dead even though it's awful for us obv, I thought the amount of times we pick up the 14BBs in the middle, it was worth the risk knowing that Tim could easily have a deece 3bet bluff range being as strong a player as he is, coupled with the fact he would know how bad it is to take a flip with his stack at this stage with the remaining field being kind of weak.

Lastly, I realised if we did get called AND lose. We would still have just under the tournament average and would still have a stack with decent utility and a strong chance of continuing and getting a high finish.

So, there we go.

Flame my thought process by all means. Happy to learn.

Bubble of the £150 GPS side event. 65 players left. 8 handed. Table has been pretty tight with the exception of 2 players who have been pretty active.

Limp UTG from 20 BB stack. Limper has been extremely face up with his limps being very marginal hands and premiums being a 3x open, not concerned in the slightest he is tarping. Think the table must have picked up on this too.

UTG+1, shoves 17 BBs, one of the active players. Had to raise/fold a lot, been opening pots IP and getting involved a lot from both blinds. Doesn't seem to have tightened up for the bubble.

UTG+2 HERO with 15 BBs, Calling range?
