I like their version of Dear Prudence, but this is a corker by Siouxsie and the Banshees:

The jolly whimsy of it - horns and all - is magical.

It's been a while, but I thought this was a fascinating article on the rise of Soviet chess after the revolution:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/moscow-1925-the-rise-of-soviet-chess-november-10-december-8-1925

I enjoyed that, thanks Simon. Some lovely photos too, especially the one (below) of nirvana.

How much has chess strategy changed in the last 100 years? How would a top chess player in, say, 1922 fare against today's best players? Get a good beating presumably?

The best from 100 years ago would get marmalised these days. It's a slower development than in poker, but it's like comparing poker from the sixties to today.

Alekhine was arguably the founder of the modern style of chess. He moved the game on to a new level. As the article discusses, the Russian revolution was a significant factor, but, for Alekhine, it was cause for him to leave. He ended up taking French nationality and having a fierce rivalry with the Cuban José Capablanca (which translates less exotically to Joe Whitehead)

I see he didn't post a picture of himself in a drizzly Blackpool in November.

Too busy getting the lot, which seems fair enough.

Well done, KevB.

Morning Simon.

Well I'm sure I would if I could see it, but all I get is a series of....

This Tweet is from an account that no longer exists.

Can you enlighten me please, as I'm getting a mild attack of FOMO now.

Oh no! Just looked and I got the same. Looks like his Twitter has gone.

Michael Nielsen is a physicist and he did a long thread of his favourite megastructures. Everything from space stations to aircraft carriers, what makes them work and why they're brilliant. Articles and pictures galore.

So sorry you've missed the proverbial aircraft carrier.

In a spooky piece of timing, I've recently been reading about something very similar, as in "mega-structures", or as I might describe them, "big things".

The Japanese Aircraft carrier Yamato....

...

...and even better perhaps, the B52 Bomber. They stopped making them in 1962, but they are planned to stay in service until 2045. Think about THAT.

Rock Lobster was a classic

Ha, the B52's made music fun.

A quick look on Wiki & I was surprised to find they are still working - or at least until tomorrow, when their "final farewell tour" ends.....

In April 2022, the group announced that they would embark on a final farewell tour, lasting from August 11th to November 11th, 2022

PS - Kate Pierson is now 74 years old. Holy moly.

Good German word, this: Sprechgesang. It's the style of singing Fred Schneider has in the B-52s. Sprech as in Speech and Sang as in Sing.

Did it for him besmirching the name of Phil Hellmuth Jr, presumably?

Well done.

How is there a nine of spades in the deck? Don't they know who you are?

Outrageous.

Go win something else instead.

£1000 GUKPT main event

17,400 approaching end of level one

UTG1 first hand I play. Raise to 300 at 100-100

Small blind 3bets to 900. Big blind snap calls

I should probably 4bet; the big blind is just never ever strong. But it would be a yukky 4bet fold, and, at least if I call, I'm playing in position, with the snap-call guy really restricting the barrel potential of the 3bettor.

3bettor bets 1.6k into 2.7k. Big blind again snap calls.

Kind of want to fold. But I can be basically 100% sure that I am beating the big blind, and fairly sure that the small blind will shut down on the turn with any hand that I beat. I call.

Turn is

Small blind bets 2.5k, big blind raises to 7k. Easy fold

SB folds. They tell each other they had KK and JJ, which there is no reason to doubt.

I wormed in on the conversation by saying I had QQ, and was informed I should have 4bet-folded pre as "at least you know where you are."

First lesson is always free.

Good luck, Stu. Get it won.

Tony Kendall Cup

Ok, let's do the annual encyclopaedia message.

Commissioner situation and Disputes

This remains as per last year: I'm the Commissioner; ForthThistle is the Co-Commissioner.

If there is a dispute you can't sort out between yourselves, it can be referred to me and I will make the decision.

If the dispute involves me, ForthThistle will make the decision.

If the dispute is between me and Forth, we'll agree someone else to make the decision.

Teams

I've heard from everyone apart from Sicilian to say they're in for this season. As he's been a fixture of these leagues, I'm working on the presumption he'll be back. Naturally, be good to hear from you when about, Sicilian Smiley

It's a 10 team Dynasty league and the squads remain as they are in your Sleeper app currently.

Entry fee

These will remain at £20 for the season.

I'll be collecting for this league, so please send your £20 to me as soon as is practicable. I'll PM anyone who needs my details shortly.

Prizes

This league is a simple winner and runner-up affair. I've amended the prizes this year to flatten it out a bit:

Winner: £150
Runner-Up: £50

Rosters

30-man rosters again, with an additional 5 Injured Reserve places.

In recent years, we've discussed changes to the rosters, but I'm content to keep them as they are. We have a fairly shallow waiver wire and free agency pool, but it's still workable.

Injured Reserve

Teams in the real NFL have players designated as IR and they don't count against their 53 man rosters.

Last year, I allowed the Covid-19 designation to count towards the IR slots. This year, I'm removing that, as it doesn't seem likely that this will be as significant a factor, on current evidence. If a player is sick for one week with a stomach issue, they can't go on IR, so I think we can treat Covid the same now.

The IR slots are for players who are out for multiple weeks and that's the way we should be playing it, too.

There is also the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which a few players in rosters will currently have as a designation. This is a multiple week injury designation and I'm happy for those players to go into the IR slots, if you want to put them there.

When a player's designation is removed, it's because the NFL team has removed it. They'll have had to make room on their roster and so should we. So, when the designation is removed, there's an expectation that you will take them off IR and put them back in your 30 man squad, even if that means cutting another player. Sleeper requires you to do this before you can make changes to the 30 man squad.

Sometimes, the designation is removed late on. I think it's fair to say you should make reasonable efforts to check (recognising not everyone is available every week). If I notice, I might send you a message on a Sunday to make you aware, but I'll generally leave you to get on with the job. I've no interest in being a heavy presence in the league, not least as it's full of people who know what they're doing.

Responsibilities of players

All players are expected to:
  • Make reasonable efforts to pick the best team they can each week
  • Make reasonable efforts to maintain their rosters (e.g., so that IR-designated players are restored to the roster once off IR)
  • Pay their entry fee
  • Treat everyone with respect
  • Be treated by everyone with respect

This list isn't exhaustive, but I think it gives you an idea.

There is no obligation on anyone to participate in chat or to engage in trades. The league runs well when everyone participates, but we all have our own lives and it's not always practicable for people to set line-ups, respond to trade offers or generally to do much with their rosters. It happens and I'm generally not minded to get involved. It's a shame when a missed Sunday check means a team is a man down, especially if that benefits the opponent significantly for the league. I'll look to apply common sense as much as possible on that, but it'd be really helpful for all if you'd all try at least to look at the team on a Sunday to make sure you've not had any surprise pull-outs.

Draft

I've put it in to start this coming Friday. It's 24 hours max per pick, as per last year.

The draft order is as follows (last year's finishing position alongside):

7 - ChipRich/LeKnave
8 - TightEnd
9 – Stevef31
10 - ForthThistle
5 - KarmaDope
6 - Sicilian
3 - Bergeroo
4 - Bobby1
2 - Ironside
1 - Tal

If anyone is away or might otherwise find themselves at risk of being unavailable to pick, I suggest setting up a list, so you don't end up with an autodraft selection from the computer.

What happens now?

You send me £20.

We start the draft Friday morning.

Please trim your rosters down as required.

PSA: The Sleeper app has changed on Android (dont know about Apple). I needed to uninstall and reinstall it from the Play Store. When I went into my Play Store apps it didnt show Sleeper, even though it was installed, and I couldn't update it. Others may need to do this as well.

Thank you. That's worked

Start planning drafts for new season?

Last season we began rookie drafts for established Dynasty Leagues on August 16th. Sounds like a good time to kick it all off again.

Also, everyone coming back? I'm in for all 3 leagues (Redraft, Dynasty, 2QB Dynasty (which I think is the Tony Kendall dynasty)) assuming they all run, of course.

I'm in for the dynasty leagues. Not so strong on the redraft, so happy if it gives someone else a chance to play to step aside. Equally, can play if it makes up a number.

The old Yahoo league - I'm going to call it the Tony Kendall Cup now, as that's what we're playing for, after all. Will help distinguish it from the other league.

Am having trouble with the Sleeper app. It's like it doesn't want to play with Android. I've changed 'phone and it won't allow me to update the app. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing similar. Have a look if you've not been in for a while.

Will set out rules and all that jazz here as normal, after we've got confirmation of who's in and who's out. Usual deal: £20 entry and I'm going to suggest a slight flattening of the payouts to £150 for first and £50 for second. That is unless anyone has strong views against this.

Draft we'll do during preseason as usual.

Popped over to see tikay a little while ago. Despite him wearing one of his more sombre shirts, I was just about able to make him out from fifty feet away.

At that time, I was able to see his face above the chipstack, but I gather he has since doubled up to 48,000. The condition of neighbouring posteriors is as yet unknown. I felt it inappropriate to enquire.

On a nearby table, what seemed to be a fairly agreeable, kindly, old gentleman smiled, tapped the table, stood up, wished his now-former tablemates well and shuffled off the Omaha coil for this event. The smiles on the table were less enthusiastic when his seat was filled by a grinning Bruno Fitoussi. I imagine playing a mixed Omaha tournament and having Bruno smile at you is much like popping round for dinner at Dr Lector's and learning you go well with a malbec.

A further wander brought me to a table near the rail where a man in a baseball cap (askew) was informing his paid-up audience that he will play Uno or Monopoly with anyone for money. Only at the WSOP, ladies and gentlemen, thought this observer.

While imparting more wisdom about his mastery of all things Hasbro and Mattel, the capped crusader threw a single chip into the middle and announced "rah-zay". The dealer was a lady of some considerable experience and her tolerance for such idiosyncrasies was appropriately limited. She rolled her eyes, informed the chap that he didn't say "raise", waved off the pleas for clemency ("speech impediment", if you will!) and called for the floor in an excruciatingly maternal tone.

With the chap now the size of the monopoly dog and realising his "get out of jail free" card wasn't going to be of use, he apologised to the dealer, agreed his utterance was in the "things that aren't RAISE" category and accepted the ruling of it being a call. A masterstroke in policing the table. It was like seeing Nigel Owens calling on a number 8 to behave.

Run deep, tikay. Go get 'em.

Some things never change - this year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was won by You Know Who, for the 7th straight year. I keep hoping he will choke on the damn things but he never does.

https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2022/07/05/nathan-s-hot-dog-eating-contest-protesters-charged--nypd

Was quite an eventful occasion

“As soon as I grabbed the guy, I realized he was a kid,’’ the 38-year-old Chestnut said. “I felt bad afterwards. I was just amped up, just focused on getting back to eating."
