I watched the first two Alien films recently. Never seen them before because I just assumed they were like the later ones which I thought were quite average. Man. They were both amazing, so much claustrophobic tension and each by a different legendary director.

Always nice to defer a treat. The very first Alien is an absolute classic. As you’ve discovered, it stands the test of time.

Nightmare Alley

Guillermo del Toro has a fabulous eye for the weird and wonderful. He’s found a great project to merge his penchant for the weird, with a more commercial plotline to attract a really good cast all the way through to the supporting characters and cameos. Cate Blanchett does a great Lauren Bacall-style vamp (it’s set in the early 40’s after all), Willem Dafoe is the perfect carnival boss, while Richard Jenkins does a pretty good version of nasty fucker. Bradley might not be your idea of the current De Niro or Pacino, but he’s acquired the knack of finding perfect roles to extend his repertoire. Just a shame that the costume department decided to dress him like Indiana Jones.... or was that intentional?

Did I mention that it’s set in the 40’s? Beautifully captured, based on films of that era for my points of reference. Maybe tikay could give a first hand reference?

Right up my alley, it’s 8.5/10 for me

Novak seems an ironic name now.

No Djoking

Egregious. I had to look it up.

Shame on you!

I don’t understand why Djokovic isn’t already on a plane back to Belgrade. Unless he’s simply investing time building martyr status. Having recently contracted Covid is absolutely no grounds for vaccine exemption, so he will lose his case on Monday.

There’s no question, though, that the Australian authorities that told him he could enter Australia on that basis have seriously screwed up. How could they think that it would ever end well, with a population that has possibly suffered the most draconian of all lockdowns (bar China)?

Pass the humble pie.

But I’m definitely getting up to watch & hear his reception on the show courts...

Not sure if this is the right place, but almost anyone who played poker down in the Southeast will have sat with Dave Gallagher

I’ve just been told that he died last night from a heart attack, aged 54.

RIP Dave

Natterly was on Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night football show. Clearly not her first appearance, since it was obvious that all the presenters and guests were giving her plenty of respect for her knowledge and views on Burnley FC. Well played, Natterly....

She's very accomplished at that sort of thing. Writes a football column for the local newspaper - Lancashire Telegraph or somesuch - & does the Official Burnley FC Podcast, "No, Nay Never".

Here she is, giving it large. Dodgy accent, mind.

She's just back from Vegas, where she cashed in the Little One Drop. Still keeps in touch of course.

You OK mate?

Hi Tony

Sorry for the late reply - only just caught up with the thread today (on a quiet day at T5 - but yes, there are still a lot of nutters traveling long haul on NYE)

My year has been a little like yours, in terms of moving home (I moved a little further south, to Windsor, and enjoying my new surroundings) and shedding a few kilos - down from 75 to 72kgs - as a result of a better diet and more exercise.

Unlike you, I am now finally divorced (hence the move), and feel like a very heavy weight has been removed.... hmmm, maybe that’s the source of the weight loss? I still pass some time with BA at LHR, but as every day passes I feel more tempted to pack it all in. Maybe it’s because I haven’t traveled anywhere for over 2 years now. I had planned a trip to Ireland for a festival in Galway next month, but I think that’s going to be toast. However, I am desperate enough to carry out my plan to go to Vegas in April - mainly because it’s a timeshare week, and I need to replenish my wardrobe (my waist has shrunk).

Oh, and I managed to come down with Covid symptoms on the day after my booster in November. Of course I thought it was just a bad reaction, but decided to get a RFT done, only then to discover the bad news. I got away with a very mild version of it, and even got back to eating within a week - I can’t eat when I can’t taste anything...

Jeez, this feels like a big derail of your thread, but there’s quite a few other Blondes who know me irl but who won’t be totally up to date on all this news, but I’ll close it off here.

Delighted to read all your updates with all the good news. Here’s hoping we can all get together safely in 2022

The judgement was a fascinating read. For those that don’t want to read the whole thing, Gibbons was found guilty by dint of his persistent refusal to give ground to Tylicki’s mount, there being an initial contact prior to the second, catastrophic contact.

This hasn’t been a good year for the sport. Let’s hope that 2022 will see some improvement....

Try Tom chinamug - a pm on here might do it?

If you’re still short of numbers by mid-Jan, I might still be able to get the weekend off work & add my light weight...

People who reverse out of parking spaces without looking to see if anyone is passing

99% of time people should be reversing into parking spaces rather than going in forward

Sometimes, because of the angle of the parking space, on a diagonal for instance, it's easier to drive in and reverse out, as in the example at the top of the picture.

People traveling to the right, who then want to turn into one of those parking spots across oncoming traffic

Very nice tipping kuku

I’m isolating with Covid, so it’s some consolation to be found a couple of winning bets

Cheers!
