Remy is a goal scorer not an all round striker which is why he looked awful in our teams at times. He's streets ahead of rivière and cisse but miles away from world class. Didn't Liverpool turn him down for 8m?  He would never be more than a back up striker for any big club. Do you really think qpr or Newcastle would have been able to sign him if he was so good?

He is a good one on one striker but I don't think he brings others into the game, works hard defensively or can play with his back to goal like Demba Ba did so well when we were successful that season. He bullied defenders, won headers, brought others into the game and still scored a bunch himself. The reason remy was so well liked was because the other option was Shola.

Remy signalled his intent way way before summer and we failed to replace him. We could have signed Pelle bit decided he was too old and his resale value wouldn't be high enough.

Very very bizarrely we signed remy Cabella who is a poor version or hba for 14m euros. Surely investing this money into a striker and keeping hba would have been the play, heck event marveux would have been better.

My point is you slagged off Remy earlier in the thread.  I find  that amusing  because it is so at odds with:

•   other posters in the thread who rated him
•   the facts in that Guardian article
•   the fact that Rodgers went for him (but reported the deal didn’t conclude because of concerns about his medical )
•   the fact that Mourhino (quite a good judge of a footballer IMO) rated him sufficiently as a back up striker in a top side where he is almost guaranteed to get game time
•   the overwhelming viewpoint on most NUFC forums liking him because he is the best they could hope for in terms of having a goalscorer on board. Last seasons stats in the league  for minutes of game time/goals scored:

Dzeko   1992/16
Giroud 3081/16
Lukaku  2562/15
Remy   2103/14
RVP      1581/12

Then you post stuff like:

“Buying Cabella for 12m and sending hba on loan is the worst decision any manager has ever made at the club”

That amuses me as well. It is just so extreme.  Not only is it extreme but  in the summer you posted your agreement to a thread including the line “Opinions of Cabella are all positive and his signing looks to be the perfect choice to fill the ever widening hole left by love him or hate him Ben Arfa”

Make your mind up eh.

One of my other favourites was 1997-98 title race. I guess a young Dubai would have been all over this?

Man Utd were miles clear but Arsenal had games in hand and more importantly, United had to travel to Highbury. I remember one bookie actually paid out on United and I think Arsenal were 6/1. I convinced my mate we had to play and we had a ton each on Arsenal. Slowly but surely Arsenal won their games in hand and then beat United 1-0, I think, at home. I think the Gunners did the Double that year as well?

Me and the Missus, who was six months pregnant with my Daughter, traveled around France for a month on the winnings.

Great story.

Yep, they won the double that year.

On Boxing Day 1997 Arsenal were 13 points behind United with 1 game in hand. So a massive turnaround and a great bet. So much for the myth of United being better in the 2nd half of the season Smiley.  You are right about beating United 1-0 at home but that was actually with 10 games  to go.

Enjoyed that - excellent article.

I've just read the last 12 months entries on the thread. Some of the stuff makes me laugh - for example Pleno thinking Remy is awful and then linking that to the great stats in the article about Remy and knowing that Rodgers wanted to buy him and mourinho actually did!

Overalll you can't help but sympathise with Newcastle supporters about the Ashley/Pardew scenario. All could have been so different if Sheikh Mansour had opted for the Toon when he was was looking at Newcastle/City/Everton before landing on City. I wonder what Newcastle fans would have made of that?

A great article on the state of Arsenals finance in the link below. This guy is one of the great football finance  writers out there and a shame he doesn't post regularly anymore.

Only QPR but very encouraging. Amount of quality going forward, particularly if they play to their potential,  is breathtaking.

Relatively straightforward next 4 games for the system/familiarity to bed in before  the real test of Chelsea,City and Arsenal in the space of 4 games.

3rd favourites to win the league and 1.68 on Betfair to finish top 4.

With polls so narrow YES is the value bet

Mike is well regarded as the best political judge on twitter (i believe the no supporters have also used him as evidence during this)

He has now updated.

Wow! I leave it for a few days and merry hell breaks loose.

Referring to people as Quislings is beyond contempt, and exactly the kind of rubbish that makes me sick to the back teeth of the whole campaign.

Quick point I was making to someone on Twitter today re Exports. Business for Scotland (a pathetic laughable organisation) put up a letter signed by 40 "internationally renowned" business leaders - some of whom owned pubs, some were chefs, at least 90% of them have never exported anything. Anyway, the crux of their statement was that Scottish food & drink exports will flourish in an iScotland. Because......welll, just because they will.

The true position is that Scottish F&D exports ARE flourishing. Now. Right now. And WILL continue to do so for the forseeable future. Unless we tear apart the system which is working so well.

The chap on twitter pointed out to me how Scottish exports subsidise Westminster. Which given that there's no VAT or Duty paid on exports is somewhat hard to fathom. What exports do is create jobs in Scotland, and every product sold abroad is an advert for Scottish tourism. Why on earth would anyone want to lose that? Would we lose all these exports? Of course not. Would creating a new system be awkward and expensive? Of course. Is it needed or even desirable? No.

Not just my views, the views of every other Scottish company I've dealt with over the last year or so. Most of whom are too scared to officially declare themselves "No" for the reasons perfectly illustrated on here by KMac. There also still many folk who still believe that their vote is a private thing and don't feel the need to shout it from the rooftops. Most of them will be happily voting No.

Around here (the highlands) many many No signs and banners have been torn down. No doubt some Yes ones have too but the vast majority of that type of behaviour is confined to the Yes camp. Is that down to pure passion? Maybe. But it's sorely misplaced.

This is one of the best pieces I've read on the whole campaign, particularly when it explains the SNP "positivity" campaign. Largely PR Spin and media manipulation - the very stuff most Yessers profess to despise. Sigh.

I'll pop back in another few days and see what's happened....

So glad you posted that link.

I too have read extensively on the whole campaign and think this  is absolutely excellent.

I like Wellbeck and this is a low risk buy.

I know his goalscoring record is not the best but heard a very interesting stat about him on Radio 5 last night. He converts 25% of his chances which, apparently, is the same percentage as Sturridge. Amazing!

As he will be playing in his prefererd position I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see his goal tally increase rapidly.
1046  Community Forums / Betting Tips and Sport Discussion / Re: Stoke City FC on: September 02, 2014, 10:48:12 PM
I saw Stoke at Man City at the weekend and they were absolutely excellent. I watch lots of football (live and on the box) and this was right up there as one of the best executed defensive  performances I've ever witnessed. Looked very lively on the counter as well and could have scored more. If Mourhino was at the helm (like at City and Liverpool lastt season) it would have gone down as a masterclass.

Two English players stood out for me - Shawcross and Crouch. Shawcross was brilliant and  looks far better than Jagielka who is having a lean time. As for Crouch, everyone knows what he is all about as a striker but in this game his defensive work was also brilliant.

Think this notion of building a team is a luxury in the english prem today. As a manager you have about 5mins flat to prove yourself before being marched out the door. Moyes was doing all that planning for the future jazz, lot of work on youth development, and how did that go down? Or players just bog off to a better deal elsewhere flushing your plans down the toilet.

What happened here is Woodward or whoever bowled up to LVG and goes "We can get Radamel Falcao...you want him?" and LVG goes "Huh, yeah ok". That was the strategy.

These days the manager isn't involved in finances so doesn't rightly care about the $$. And woodward knows a couple of hero goals and the shirt sales from China cover the wages. And LVG knows Falcao could help him make it to the end of the season. Yep, the romance of building a team is quite a luxury with the demands for instant gratification today.

You are right as far as the recent United strategy is concerned but I don't think that is the case as far as Chelsea and City are concerned. Both clubs have had defined strategies as to what they need and gone about their business accordingly. This is in contrast to United's scattergun approach over the last 12 months.

Ogden reporting in the Telegraph that his wages are £346,000 per week = £18million for the year plus the loan fee of £6million.

Nice work if you can get it...

This was the system advocated by Martin Samuel this morning:

The seedings are based on those teams performances in Europe over the last 5 years.
It seems a perfectly reasonable system.

I don't think it's reasonable at all.  It just helps protect a tv cartel of the big 12 or so clubs going as deep as possible by the seeding being directly linked to previous season's performance which makes breaking it tougher and tougher as each season goes on.  By the every title of the competition the top 8 seeds in pot A should be the top 8 ranked countries champions from the previous season imo.

It's more reasonable than your suggestion Smiley

Your system protects the strongest leagues, the current system protects the strongest clubs. Not much difference and just swings and roundabouts.
Arsenal are in the 1st pot coz they are one of the top 8 teams in the competition (and they would be, even without CL money).
Replacing them with Anderlecht would be silly.
If you wish to redistribute the money the CL generates, there are better ways than promoting your 'affirmative action' policies, which would simply weaken the competition.
I dunno, give the Champions of every league in Europe £10m. Distribute the TV money equally between all the teams that participate.
Even if you did that, or even further, if you gave Anderlecht Arsenals share of the CL money over the next 10 years and gave Arsenal Anderlechts share of money, in 10 years time Arsenal will still be the richer and stronger club due to other income streams.

In your system, teams like Celtic/Apoel/Basel/Olympiakos that have previously done well at European level can't EVER break into the top seeds due to their countries co-efficient.

Also if you have a problem with the title of the Champions League, would you prefer if we named it the 'The Very Good Teams League'?

It strikes me as absurd that Arsenal, having finished 4th (again) and having only just qualified for the Group Stage can effectively be seeded higher than Liverpool and City after finishing below them in the league last year. My personal view is the current system is a nonsense.

However, the point that has prompted me to post, is your assertion Arsenal would be in the top 8 clubs in Europe without Champions League money. You might not be aware that even using the flawed UEFA ranking system they are  currently ranked 10th (and 9th for 2013/2014) They have only made Pot 1 because of the failure of 2 clubs above them to qualify and are hanging by a thread should they again qualify for next year's Champions League.

I think you are over

agreed they were only just the 4th best team in England last year.  Big statement to say they are a top 8 side in Europe even without CL money when PSG, Real, Barca Bayern are locks to be above Arsenal as well.  If you add all the marginal teams around them in any rankings then Arsenal would never be considered an auto spot for a top 8 team in Europe imo obviously.

Playing in the CL seventeen years on the spin obviously counts for something.

Tough titteh for Johnny-come-latelys I'd say.

Agreed AW has done an amazing job to do 17 years in a row given how few times in those 17 years Arsenal have actually finished 1st and 2nd in the EPL.

Agree about Wenger. A fantastic achievement.

In the last 10 years:

4th 6 times
3rd 3 times
2nd 1 time

So it seems entirely justiifable that Arsenal are Pot 1? No way IMO.

The 7 years before that were pretty good for Arsenal tho:

2nd 4 times
1st 3 times.
