This site has quite a lot of examples

www.tattoodles.com

Asking why people have tattoos is a bit like asking why people style their hair a certain way, wear certain clothes, wear make up, wear jewellery, wash - don't think it can be much more than a personal choice about the 'you' you want to present to the world - some people like to look like an accountant, some people want to look younger than they are, some people dress to impress, most young fellas punk up their hair in very strange shapes, some people like to say, here are my tattoos, I think they make look me edgy and I might be hard - don't mess with me - an equivalent of the ten hole doc if you will. (s'my motivation anyway :-)

One small advice I'd give if you're certain that you want a tattoo. It is possible that you think you want it for your own amusment and appreciation and get it done in a place where, in the normal course of things, it isn't visible to the outside world.

Suggest you think carefully, human nature (well mine anyway) is that you tend to want people to know you have a tattoo and for them to see it. Especially in America it's surprising how many blokes you see with their T shirt sleeves turned up or rolled up to show their tattoos - turning up a T shirt sleeve I think is very un cool I think :-) Or you see them adopting strange positions so their shirt rides up to reveal the tattoo - lots of stretching and big movements.

Suggest you carefully choose and then make sure it's done where at least some of it can be seen without having to make efforts for people to see it.

Alternatively, get one done in a hidden place, and if you really like it, go straight back for another one in more visible spot.

Thanks for posting that clip - will look up some more, he's good at what he does but interesting Tank points out he falls into the very thing he ridicules.

While back now I had a business conferencing company - we always tried to put on some kind of alternative to the mainstream speakers in one slot in the evening - one year we went the whole hog and put on a comedian - Jimmy Tarbuck - oho !!

We were sceptical about our choice (since he wasn't someone who figured on our personal list of funny people) but it seemed like a safe ish kinda bet for a business audience (at that time mainly male dominated, 1995)

Thing was, to a live audience he was very very funny, very polished, oho, and professional in the extreme (research the audience, tailor gags etc). Something definitely there in the older school performers. His hourly rate aint too shabby either - oho, oh yes !

Eddie Izzard

Stephen Wright, though I don't think they showed him at his best.

Jack Dee

The line that had me laughing most last night though was from Chris Rock from about ten years ago - he does this Niggaz versus Black thing and he said a few things that made me laugh, the one that made me laugh the most was a along the lines:

"Niggaz are always looking for acknowledgement of things the rest of us think as natural, a Nigga will often come up to you and say "I look after my kids" - "why does he want to be acknowledged for looking after his kids, you're supposed to you dumb muthafucka"

He spat that out with such venom/bemusement/ridicule that I laughed for nearly a minute - that's quite a long time to laugh.

Gonna make an effort to see more of his stuff.

I guess not many people will agree with all the politics of George, I know I don't anyway - old news maybe, but this is a bravura performance - would that we were all so capable of robustly and eloquently defending ourselves when threatened or accused unjustly
