It was so embarrassing Paul, normally I'd a popped over to your table, explained the terrible beat I just took and wished you good luck :-)

Anyways, way you play your game yr gonna lose to a beat more often than not. Not such a bad thing is it really.

Cheers for now

7263  Poker Forums / The Rail / How do you leave a poker table after buffoonery of a high order ? on: February 21, 2007, 09:37:45 PM
I ask this question following my appearance in my 6th live tournament yesterday at Luton. Now I fancy myself quite a bit in terms of live play with 3 final table appearances from 6 tourneys.

I donked my chips off in spectacular fashion, at the time I couldn't leave the table fast enough being quite embarrassed when I flipped my cards over. It's hard to explain the kind of brain freeze that made me do what I did - however, since then I have laughed quite a lot about it to myself and I want to share it by way of self flagellation - all mockery welcomed, what doesn't kill me will strengthen me :-)

Anyway, to my tale - great structure last night, 7500 starting chips, half hour clock and starting level was 25/50.

I had made a bit of progress and then was back down to around 7700 after being pushed of a couple of small pairs after the flop.

Was very tired and have suffered with a background toothache for about a week so not 100% but OK. Was enjoying the environment and thought that the structure suited a rock with no moves like me.

To my left was  young bloke who had taken a few pots with small preflop raises and continuation bets - he seemed to be getting a fair bit of respect, he'd also taken a reasonable pot early on with a FH using the 5 from the A5 in his hand.

Anyways, second level, was in the small blind, guy in the cut off raises it to 300. Strangely I have played with him before and he's solid - likely to be raising there with a reasonable pair, maybe as low as AJ, AQ. I look down at my AJ and am happy to call for 250 more in the SB and see what comes down.

Young, nice looking guy in the BB pumps it up to 950. I have only seen him show down one hand, if he showed down more I wasn't paying attention. This is the first time I could feel my brain cells starting to coagulate - freeze - slightly cease to function. I have called with a monster, how can he have the temerity to raise. I'm having none of it - re-raise to 3000.

It then got quite TV like, I have made him stop and think.. "got you, you at-it young 'un" - I was certain. He asked me how much I had left, at this stage I felt like Harrington as I casually counted out my remaining 4200 or so.. still sure that the casual way I counted them out, gave one chip a little shove would have him shaking as he should have - I have AJ after all !!!

Anyway, shows how useless he was - he pushed - I knew he had me covered and was looking forward to doubling up, slight feeling still that he was at-it - no wait a sec, at this stage I knew he was ahead by a fair distance but still, feeling out played, I couldn't help calling.

I mean, I was a bit tired - but suddenly some wierd bravado 'I am nirvana, I will outdraw you' welled up in me. Man, I had 4000 chips left and with blinds at 50/100 (50/100 for chrissakes) I could have so easily passed. Anyway, I called, he flips over his AK (thought it might be stronger in the end) takes the pot, and I left in something of a hurry.

I wish I had had hand some kind of witty remark to make about why I did what I did, I wish I had had some kind of Tuff Fish rant lined up about how I always find someone with a hand but instead I just shuffled - never quite left anywhere as swiftly whilst trying to retain some dignity...... and failing I think.

Only reason I have mentioned all this is I am pretty sure having done some googling that the young fella was JP Kelly - this is the bit that has had me laughing today - the thought that I tried to out play a player who is rather better than me - in some ways my biggest regret is that I didn't just push originally when he pumped it to 950. Anyway, not a beat story, just maybe slughtly amusing for folks and to record my tragic self aggrandising initial move for posterity.

If JP Kelly wasn't at the comp last night then sorry for putting him in that seat as my vanquisher

If more people were like Snatiramas and listened to Killing Joke there would be much less bother in general. Simple as..

Facts and figures the clocks turn backwards
Facts and figures turn anticlockwise
Many signposts leading to the same place
I wonder who chose the colour scheme it's very nice
Unspeakable!

Just found these, what a great addition to the site !!

I'm now hanging on every word from Kirderf and have today began an experiment to multi table the 25/50 games (cents, that is) and see if I can enjoy this kind of gameplay again like I once did

Back to a PC after a coupla days and really interesting to read all this stuff.

There was bullying, the catalyst, I think being typical English issues with class. Many english people remain very conscious of 'class' and can easily be intimidated and daunted by it - I think this led to the kind of behaviour we saw with three very jealous chav lassies ganging up to bully the clearly more intelligent, more refined, more respected, more famous, more beautiful, more capable, more tolerant.. Shilpa who preferred not to discuss, getting trashed, losing her virginity etc etc.

It was easy to see how Shilpa could have been seen as patronising or condescending from time to time but throughout she remained very dignified and showed great mental strength. Ultimately she was able to see the character of the chavs more clearly than they can see themselves - as a result she has shown a great deal of forbearance and forgiveness of their behaviour - dare I say it - classy ! Surprised some people here have said very neagative things about her.

I didn't see any overtly racist stuff directed at Shilpa but a horrible gang and bully mentaility developed and it became clear that Shilpa could do no right. When the gang discussed Shilpa when she was not present it was very clearly racist - 'I think she should fuck off home' being one of the obvious examples. So, racism was very evident but for the most part it was a glimpse into very nasty bullying - imagine how it might have gone if Shilpa didn't have the fall back of being able to seek comfort with the more normal people in the house.

Jade is clearly a little intellectually challenged - I feel sorry for her and feel she is being made a scapegoat - when she said Shilpa Poppadom it would be like one of us referring to an Italian we didn't like and saying something like it was Antonioni Ravioli - bit childish maybe but not racist in my opinion.

When the big row happened she was vile and rude but I don't think it was racist or even bullying at that point, She just showed herself unable to debate on an adult level and resorted to a series of increasingly outlandish insults because she had lost control and was just about self aware enough to realise she couldn't win a normal argument. From that point on she was constantly on the brink of tears because, again, she was just about self aware enough to realise she had done wrong but didn't have the emotional intelligence to retrieve the situation.

I think Jade is guileless and fundamentally good hearted. Danielle and Jo were the truly nasty pieces in this play - ugly people, ugly characters who egged Jade on in an insidious way and then tried to present themselves as following Jade's lead - shockingly awful people. People whose faces, frankly, I would never tire of slapping.

I think the programme makers handled this reasonably well - I guess we don't know all the communications that go on between them and the contestants but I liked the way they appeared to resist the pressure to wade in and tell people to stop. Instead they held a mirror up to people like Danielle with open questions like 'What did you mean when you said xxxx ?' Far more effective and exposing of their hate-filled agenda.

I do think it is easy to be too PC and brand too many things as racist rather than 'differentist' but, as Flushy has alluded to many times very eloquently in this thread, it is probably better to be too PC than to let a kind of casual racism (prevalent still in the UK in my view) go unchallenged.

On a positive note, in many ways I think it is amazing how little overt racism there is in this country as opposed to how much there is. Also, it is a massively more positive environment for asian/black people here now than say 20 years ago.

Don't know why I wrote so much but I think it's because this programme has ended up stimulating a whole load of deabte about the nature of our society that it's irresistible to have ones own tuppenceworth.
