Pride is indeed a joyous thing.
I discovered that there was a world beyond Watney’s when I first tasted Barnsley Bitter in a country pub somewhere between Corby and Northampton. When I then learnt that this marvellous brew was to become history I joined CAMRA and was involved in a fair few beer festivals in the 70s. In 1975 I auctioned off 8 pints of London Pride at Northampton Drill Hall, for £2 a pint. Amazing what people will pay when they’ve spent the day drinking.
If I were told that i was only ever allowed to drink one single beer, then Landlord is the beer that I would choose.
I am not in favour of the proliferation of so-called ‘craft’ beers and ‘American’ IPA, who drinks this stuff?

Doom Bar is ok of there’s nothing much else available but assuming that the Ruddles was their Best Bitter (aka Blue) why would you not just choose that? I’d take County over Doom Bar too.
I'd take Batemans over any of them I won’t argue with that. But I will raise Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. Yes TTL is a good brew but I was born and bred in a Batemans ale house Lucky lucky man! Bateman’s is rarely on offer up here, but I did have a very good day of drinking it on a poker weekend in a sports club in Lincoln a year or so back.

Our binmen are relentlessly cheerful. Rain, snow, hail, wind or heat seem to have no effect on them. Three generations of children have waved to them and always got a wave back.
We’re still getting weekly collections and the only time Bank Holidays changes things is if there’s one on a Tuesday as there was on Boxing Day. They were there on the 27th looking as effervescent as ever.

€10000 Main event Boom, got Kabhrel penultimate hand of day. Thrilled with this one His opening sizings has been fairly open book. He's talking relentlessly (obviously). The speech to me seems to be that he thinks I'm nitty. 80% that that's true He opens but to 2.8k at 1.2kbb. I have in the SB. Sizing probably week. He's 128k deep. I make it 10k Speech. Call . Bet 12k into 23k Speech. He makes it 24k It really feels like this is a writing off of me doing anything agressive. Possibly not, possibly he's on a different level. But I think I have to. Make it 55k Speech. Call He has 58k behind, 134k in pot I think it's such a good spot to leverage bluff. If it's what it seems, he's writing off the chance of me doing so. Bet 38k into 134k Speech. Fold. Phew 246,500 to finish the day No rush (after the tournament win is fine), but would you explain the leverage bluff point for me, please? 38k into 134k, when the villain only has half a pot behind at the turn, leaving 20k behind if he calls: why is this better than shoving? Not a criticism. Genuinely interested as this seems like a situation where you don't have enough to get a river fold, unless it's total air on his part. Hey Simon, yes, good question! Leverage I guess was technically the correct term, but used in the wrong context. When I bet 38k of his remaining 60k, then, yes, both it is almost all of it, so not the classic leverage spot, and also, I will (super sigh) call if it does move all in, given 14:1 One thing that I may be wrong with, but do absolutely swear by, is that, against a new opponent, and possibly playing a slightly naive image myself as the middle aged Dad I am now, then, when effectively moving all in pre or post, the move of not quite going all in can work wonders. It can confuse the count, sometimes look stronger (even though it should be obvious that it is exactly the same), and I find just maybe carry a psychological effect of making a fold more likely. It's definitely worked both ways over the years, but I feel with more success than failure. In that hand, there was also the worry of not knowing what his rebuy situation was - I knew he had somewhat recently finished 6th in the 50k, but wasn't fully sure that it was only his first bullet (only one rebuy was allowed). There was some fear that he may just "give up" on his final 60k chips, and stick it in, but luckily wasn't the case. This idea of betting half the opponent’s stack came up on The Chip Race a while back. I think it was O’Kearney who felt that people were more likely to fold when they would be left with shrapnel than if they were simply out. Glad it worked for you anyway. Best trip reports ever.

Was just listening to a podcast with John Campbell, he's mentioned in this thread quite a lot and was always interesting to listen to during the pandemic.
I find the whole Covid enquiry approach is pretty much guaranteed to ensure we learn almost nothing from the experience that will ensure we would handle something like this better in the future.
It seems way too focused on the Government's clown like behaviours, uselessness and corruption than the more serious issue of whether the nature of the generally supported response (lockdowns, speedy introduction of new tech vaccines, closing schools etc) were actually better than doing nothing and serve as any kind of model for a future response.
Agree. Possibly the only lesson that we will learn is that using Snapchat as a government tool is inadvisable. It’s an instant format that is best used for trivia; sharing memes and off colour jokes and that seems to have leached into the discussions held on it. We should be learning about why we were so ill-prepared and why we indulged in some indiscriminate spending on stuff that should have been sourced through established contracts with established suppliers. Not from any Tom Dick or Harry that turned their hand from cosmetics, car sales or desk manufacture to the fleecing of the nation via inflated prices on basic stuff. It begs the question about all government procurement. Why is it not on an audited agreed profit margin? Lots of industries work this way, why not government?

Archer?
How nice, I thought, you are missing me. Then I checked the date 17/18 Lost 3-1 17/18 Lost 3-0 18/19 Lost 2-0 18/19 Lost 3-1 19/20 Lost 3-0 19/20 Lost 3-0 20/21 Lost 1-0 20/21 Lost 1-0 21/22 Lost 5-1 21/22 Lost 2-1 22/23 Lost 3-1 22/23 Lost 4-1 8th October 2023 23/24 Won1-0 Ralph: "Where's Archer?" Touché Archer mon brave. Well I have missed your insightful contributions on the footie boards, not to mention your rapier wit which I see is as sharp as ever. Any derby predictions? Cheers sir. I had no money on the derby but City priced at about 60% probability to win before the game. With hindsight that seems like a steal. Great that United have turned into a comedy club again at the moment and it looks like it will continue for some time yet. Give it to Giggsy I say... Top of the Premier League looks like fun again Taking pleasure from the win on Sunday is like celebrating a win against your 6yr old nephew when you beat him at chess. We are poor on so many metrics right now. Not least the one for getting players fit and keeping them that way. I’m in no way arrogant enough to think I have answers to the situation. Maybe we should just dump the superstars and see what we can win with kids.
