 Paul was asked to leave the casino by one of our managers as the clothing he was wearing was advertising one of our competitors (A massive Aspers Casino logo on the back of the hoody).
We are asked not to wear anything Genting related when we enter another casino.

Jeff Kimber and Joe Beevers are sponsored Grosvenor pros and have no problems wearing their patches in Genting casinos.

Why would Genting be so worried about Aspers?

And even if they did, why didn't they just give something to cover up the logo?

Yes Keith everything you are saying is what is being asked and said and I also know the Casino Manager who seems to have simply totally over reacted. Big thread going on at present on Geordie Poker Facebook page and have requested a response from Genting management on the matter regarding if story from Paul is accurate and requesting their side of the story. Be interesting to see if they respond. Alot of local players amazed and very annoyed at what has happened

Finished work early today so decided to go late to Genting Casino Newcastle for their Wednesday afternoon game. Still in uniform (fire service for those that don,t know) the only thing I had in the car to cover it was a hoody which had the Asper casino logo on. Played for 5 hours made the final table and the money.but during the break in the toilets bumped into the manager (Nigel I think his name is) he said you shouldn,t really be wearing that in here !! I politely explained that I wasnt a member of aspers staff, showed him the uniform beneath explained the reason why i was wearing it (I,m not supposed to enter licensed premises in uniform) went back to rejoin the tournament to be approached by a member of staff who informed me I had to leave the casino. I asked why and he said it was because of the logo on my top. I said politely" I,m on the final table of the tournament, if its that much of a problem I,ll take the top off" to which he replied "sorry NO we,ll refund you entry fee and you have to leave NOW" even when a member of staff appealed on my behalf "surely if he takes the top off he can stay" NO was the reply ....So thanks Genting Casino Newcastle ....over 10 year a member and a regular customer and this is how they treat you. pulled from the final table (60 plus runner slight brag) and marched off the premises. They were unable to find a buyer, &, presumably, it was costing too much time & money to run. I'd surmise from that it was costing a good deal more than £10 a month. I doubt they would have closed it if it was profitable, or only costing a tenner a month.

 

The NPF was closed in the main for personal reasons by the owners who then put a for sale price on it but declined a lower offer as felt it best for all concerned it was allowed to close.

The forum was operated in the main at the expense of the owners and profit or financial gain was never the aim and purpose of that forum and it was certainly costing far in excess of £10.00 per month to host and operate. The benefits and returns local North East players received from that forum could never be actually quantified or price put on it IMO. One thing is for sure it would never be replicated or bettered and once again thats my opinion.

You make a fair point though, I don't think, in this day & age, poker forums can be run for profit, & certainly that's not the be all & end all, they just need to be affordable, & do their job by the regulars at an acceptable cost. 2+2 of course, is a different matter entirely.

Yes, it really loses money, and does so every year.

I would disagree strongly with your second sentence. Very few forums make money. In the little world of poker, I would imagine just 2 forums in the entire world make money. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of poker forums globally.

Overall, ( not just poker) the % of forums that make money would be less than 5%.

I'm really curious where you found evidence that most forums make money. Care to enlighten us with your source?

We did experiment with advertisements "in thread" a few years ago, but the members went apeshit, so we abandoned that.

From my experience in online gaming I have seen/used a bunch of the free forum software and all of these were at least breakeven to significantly profitable and varied from smaller than blonde to 5x the size if not bigger. Maybe it is just the change in consumers attitudes to adverts (with the advent of things like Adblock) that have really hampered blonde but I really like you could move to the equivalent of invasionfree (zetaboards now?) forums and it would look the same as here and be hosted for free. You might be right about the 5% figure but I wasn't particularly thinking of sites like THM or something. Maybe I am way underestimating the moderation cost as that is something that would have been done for free, but this is a much more serious environment. I probably did overstep the mark by saying all forums are profitable but they are so easy to set up and so cheap to run. I know 14 year olds that were making $3k a month hosting a free gaming forum. Blonde wastes a bunch of server space on the forum games/front page/blondepedia and all that malarky too.

I guess I overstepped because I know its possible to set up a very cheap forum so it surprised me so much to hear this. The more googling I've done makes it sound that they aren't very profitable, but no way is hemorrhaging money either. Some people have struggled to monetise (like blonde I'd guess) but I didn't see anyone running a sponsored forum claiming to lose money.

people run forums for many other reasons than making money mate and in the NPFs situation it certainly wasnt ran or set up for monetary purposes.

gotta love the cardroom manager who requested to the players at the final table that they leave £250 for the valets despite taxing them 30% on top of the entry fee.

yes mate but every entry knows prior to entering what the costs are in Vegas. This was NOT told to players here prior to game starting. It was only when players pointed out the players prize pool that it was announced.  Big big diff that

Local casino puts on poker festival and 1st game is tonight which is a £50 freeze out with £5 reg fee dealer dealt 5000 chip starting stack. Optional extra is 2000 extra chips for additional £10

Game is underway with over 130 runners and players notice the players pool is NOT including the additional £10 purchases. When cardroom staff are asked about this they are told the additional £10s are NOT being added to the prize pool.

Its head office decision and being trialled there tonight.
Apparently it won't happen again after tonight but not the point is it!
Ended up with 137 runners and £6850 in the pot but with the £10s would have been over £8k.
