Disable the upload and play, if it works then you've fixed it. This was a thread about Vista, usually a new post for a different topic.

Here's my proper answer:

Usually you can set a 'throttle' on your uploads, i usually set this to 10Kb/s this means my connection isn't brought to its knees.
You could ask your ISP if they prioritise traffic etc, but with it being BT i'd guess that all their gaming traffic is properly prioritised and working (as they have a lot of users). However if you were uploading at high speed this is likely the cause. It wouldn't actually crash the software, but yes, make it take a very long time to download.

Had Vista a few days. Not overly impressed so far, still finding my way about though. Now, how do I share my printer...

What spec is the PC? Sticking XP on it wud be a lot better for them.

It's nice your giving them your PC, BUT
If they are getting broadband then they might as well get a new PC or at least one with XP.
Are you ready for any support issues etc, there will probably be a lot of questions and problems, moreso with it being Win98.

If they get a PC from elsewhere, you are less responsible, but can still help out.

£200 for a new PC, or maybe £100 for 2nd hand, still capable of running XP.

If this is just a taster for them to see if they take to a PC, then don't sign them up to a years broadband...
dial-up wud be a cheap taster. If your worried about call costs, fast4.net do an unlimited dial up account for about £5/month no contract.

Hope some of this is useful, don't mean to poo poo your plan.

In answer to you specific question then, all ISPs will support win98, it depends on which crappy modem they supply. You can get round that by using a modem/router as suggested. You will need a network port on the PC for that (or you can add a network card or wireless card). If they are in an area that has cable then the NTL modem (and probably other cable modems but I have no experience of them) uses an ethernet (network) interface not USB so that will work.

I recommend anyone who is using a USB modem upgrade to a router, broadband is always on not dial-up like the USB modems make it.

My bro just booked a great deal in Sharm-El-Sheikh via http://www.otbeach.com/ he got 2 free child places, there were 4 adults thought, so I'm not sure whether you'd get that.

Other good sites are www.goingabroad.com/ and www.teletextholidays.co.uk/
1339  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: What are the odds??? on: January 26, 2007, 06:26:11 PM
ok, so you are playing heads up and you bluff all in on the flop, your opponent calls and so the cards are turned over and you can see your opponent is holding  .

now my answer is correct Wink

Yes knowing your opponent has 2 cards that aren't hearts means hitting a flush. But there are full house draws to consider now, so no point in hitting a flush if it's 10h or .

flush draw beating a set:
47/7 x 46/6 = 50/1 = 1.9%

And running straight cards would be just as good as a backdoor flush (unless your agasint 67... not too likely). Chances of hitting a 3 and a 5 are:

47/8 * 46/4 = 67/1 = 1.5%

Dan, what was the bet exactly, just the odds of a backdoor flush or of A2 beating a set? How much was it for, and who won?

1340  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: who is the worst main event winner ever???? on: January 15, 2007, 03:01:22 AM
Worst main event player:

I think Gold is by far the worst. I don't mind Varkonyi being a geek or getting lucky, at least he is a nice guy (not that I know him or anything!).

Gold on TV just seemed like a total ****. Obviously I don't know him personally at all either, but I didn't like the way he smarmed his way through (and IMO borderline cheated a few times!).

I also don't think Gold was that good a player, he had a very amazing run of cards, which is where his luck lay. Rather than other players who sucked out a few times, Varkonyi, Moneymaker, Raymer and probably every winner really, it's a long tournament! Who needs to suck out when you get dealt the best hand almost all the time. It was probably exaggerated as I only saw the highlights, but he certainly got more than his share.

Allen Cunningham really had Gold's number and I was hoping he won. I didn't really believe Gold could call his reraise with KJ! If only Cunningham had been raising with a worse hand than 10 10, say KQ and he'd have doubled up and more on that hand and almost definately have beaten him. Gold's talking wasn't working on Cunningham and was giving away lots of information.

I'd much prefer a lucky, not very good poker player who is a nice guy (or girl) to win.

Yeah 11M might not be fast enough for your broadband  ;-)

Speed advantage will be mainly for the network, but you can get 16Mbit broadband now, which is faster than 11b, which is capable of 11MBits but usually scales back to 5.5, and broadband speeds aren't goin to get slower...

So yeah, 11b might not be fast enough to use your broadband at full capaity.

So a data card mite be best, (of course you have to have a laptop not PC for that).

Not true, you can get a USB data modem.

Not technically called a PC card (old name PCMCIA card) anymore if it's USB. So what I said is TRUE, but point taken Wink

As with any router, you will have to log in and enter your broadband username nad password then save it.

Wireless routers are about £40 on ebuyer, so it's not a terrible price for a router, is it wireless g or just b? Might be time to upgrade to a g if it isn't, just a bit faster and slightly longer range usually.

I've installed this modem/router for a few people recently without any proplems, it comes with a wireless USB adapter too which might be useful. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/64780

1345  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: Laptop or PC??? on: January 10, 2007, 09:23:13 PM
£1000 is a ridiculus budget for a desktop PC these days, especially if you are not gaming on it.  £1000 is a good budget for a good laptop. For a desktop, £400 is plenty.

Personally, I'd go on ebuyer and get whatever PC is cheap there and has alright reviews. Then I'd stick 2 17" monitors that work in portrait mode. Reason: they have a 1280x1024 resolution, if you rotate it then you can fit 2 poker tables on top of each other fully. In landscape, you can't quite fit 2 tables on, they overlap a bit. So if you have 2 in portrait side by side you have enough room for 4 tables if you want that. Other option, is like what has been said, 1600x1200 screen, they are usually 20.1" or above. That fits 4 tables nicely. If you only play 1 table most of the time then a plasma tv in the lounge with a desktop PC next to it and one of these wireless keyboards will do the trick http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106486 If you TV does PIP then you can have TV on one side and poker on the other.

I think a PC is the best choice, laptops are for on the move... but if its for poker, and you like playing all over the house, and your mainly a 1 table guy then something like the Samsung Q1 wud be a neat toy : http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/122632

Just looked up a couple of PCs, http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/120283 and http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116050/rb/24377030122 you'll find these will out perform almost all laptops and yes, they are only £200. There are some more expensive PCs on there if you look, but personally, I'd sink the extra money into 1 massive screen or 2 17" in portrait, depending on your preference. I have a 1600x1200 and a 17" in portrait here, so that's 6 tables if I ever played that many. 4 is the usual, but I can sitck a movie or email on the 2nd screen at the same time.

Hope there's some useful stuff in here for you.

You could get a data card as suggested, that will work if you have a laptop, you will still need a SIM card to put in it, and if you got a 3G card you'd prob be getting in on a contract...

You can get online with your mobile. That would be the easiest way. If you have a nokia then they have nice software on their website which does all the settings for you. I think vodafone have their own software but I haven't used it. The cheapest way if you just want email etc will be to do pay as you go on vodafone or orange. T-mobile used to have free internet access, but that might be on contract so you might want to check that out. If you go for 3G it will be faster, but you'll probably end up using more data then and it will cost more. If you are using O2 then you have to be a contract customer not PAYG to user their GPRS via PC (annoying as guess who I am with).

If you phone has bluetooth then that is the easiest way to connect. If not then you can try infra-red or a datacable, but to be honest, if your phone doesn't have bluetooth then their won't be too much support for it, drivers etc. So a data card mite be best, (of course you have to have a laptop not PC for that).
