I am not a superstitious person, in fact I am quite the opposite. I purposefully walk under ladders, I cross the paths of black cats, I break mirrors for fun, The number of Magpies I see does not bother me. I know a man who will not allow shoes to be put on a table; if new shoes are brought in a room he has a panic attack and if someone (me) puts them on a table he has to visit his psychiatrist. I will say MacBeth if I am ever in a play.
But when it comes to poker I am quite different. I have to wear my lucky shirt, I am happy when I get seat 7 or 8 and if I get 1 or 5 it doesn't feel right. I do not like to win the 1st hand of a tournament but I prefer to be in the hand.  If a Virago appears on my table I develop a cold sweat. Most of these things derive from incidents I have experienced in previous games.

My dilemma is the "Golden Chip" I had one in a previous tournament and didn't display it; I played like Jamie Gold and was eliminated quickly.

So do I display it today?

I played last night. Arrived early and was greeted by two friendly girls, who gave me my "Golden" chip. We had a bit of banter about me possibly being the 1st player to cash  in a golden chip!
Went accross to Frankie and Bennies and had the New York Calzone which is very nice- the waiter asked me what I was up to...it must look funny somebody eating alone. I told him I was Playing cards accross the road - he said "oh are the Scandinavians here again"??
With 3 minutes to go "Aces" tells us the game will start on time as usual. I have been coming to DTD since it opened and I can only remember once when a Tournament started late; due to a computer malfunction. Some things in the place have changed since it opened, there are slot machines, Roulette and now Black Jack.  If these games keep it viable they can only be a good thing - If possible a craps table would be a great addition.
I am on seat 8 on my table which is my favourite seat but it turns out to be seat 7.5 as there are 10 players to each table which confuses everybody who sit in wrong seats. Once this is sorted the game starts - there are a mixture of standard of players, obviously some dont usually play for so much prizemoney and are quite tentative but there are a couple of young men who obviously play at a high level and are talking about "Stars,Tilt, 3 betting, pot odds and stuff like that. You can tell they are good players because of the angle of their caps. These "modern " players have some infuriating habits, other than talking incessantly about what they have won online, or which hotel you will be staying in in Vegas next month, things like ....can you spread the pot please? I have been playing this game for 20 years now and if i am in a pot I know to within a chip or two how much is in the pot - I can only assume they do this to demonstrate that they are aware of pot odds or implied odds and it helps them to foster their table image!
However, despite knowing how much is in the pots I proceed to lose most of my chips. For the 1st hour I can not win anything and am soon down to 3,000 from the starting stack of 10k. So I do what all good players do I shove on any two, which changes my fortune and I soon start building a stack. I am now getting good cards and get back up to average stack by the 1st break. The dealers are generally good and the rotation of dealers can be a bit offputting particularly if you get your "lucky" dealer and he/she leaves in the middle of a hot streak.
After a couple of hours of not getting any cards and just folding and watching the young people having fun three betting and stuff , my cards suddenly change. I get AA and KK and hit a Q on the flop for trips and before you know it I have 25k and the average is 14k. The blinds increase insidiously and before I know it my 22k is just average but I then get the hand that changes things ;"I look down at or wake up to " and after a lot of three four and five betting me and a young person are all in. He has  The board come  for a split second both of us were frantically looking for a heart and mine was bigger than his- so I doubled up. The blinds were now 800 /1600/ 200 ante and the nature of the game changes - more folding ,stealing with big raises or all ins .Eventually there are about 70 players left at close of play I have 61,o00 which is above the average of 46k so will be back on Saturday.

"I wake up with pocket rockets so the villain calls my raise ,the flop comes  so i Ipush all in and he tanks , he says if I fold will you show me one - eventually he calls and flips snowmen. Can you believe it it comes  he scoops the lot and says sorry mate" - heard in any break in any cardroom.

DAY 2 - I started with 23k chips and had a nice surprise to be on table O'Connell.

Mr O'Connell is an outgoing character and I was hoping to learn something from his play. He said he was a little under the weather and had not got to bed till 6am. He proceeded to play most hands and as the play developed he was mainly going all in.

I questioned his strategy and he said the power of the all in bet was immense, but had to be used in the right place at the right time. I quickly discovered when the right time was - it was when it was his turn to act. This strategy meant that his stack varied in proportion to his starting range until eventually his luck ran out.

After that the table calmed down a bit and I gradually increased my stack to 125k. A player called Graham commented that I seemed to be getting good hands all the time and he had been existing on scraps. I did get good cards for about two hours but then the last two sessions I went card dead. Graham, however, Started hitting and and  with amazing regularity and his stack of about 25k ended up 200k+ . In one hand he had  againt  and with all 3 all in and he eliminated both players for a 120k pot.
In another hand he took a massive pot with AA again with the cards on board  all in and called - I think the other player had AK.
You have to expect to go card dead at some stage but hope that it dosnt last forever.

The bubble lasted nearly an hour and there was much discussion regarding what hands would be played and it was felt that only AA or KK was playable - someone even suggested that AA may be folded preflop.

I ended up with 83k so need to act quickly today to avoid beeing blinded out

I played yesterday in 1(b) - The atmosphere in DTD was electric as it always is when its full. Different from a Thursday night when its half empty. The table I was on was quite tight and my stack gradually increased for the 1st two levels to 29k until My pocket  were cracked by  hitting two pair. which crippled me down to 8k . I then had to grind it  back up again.

I was lucky that I was at the same table until 30 minutes to go when the table was broken. I had just about sussed all the players on the table the only danger was one bloke who had amassed a big stack ( about 60k) and started bossing the table. I got pocket AA twice more and they held up both times which got me back to 23k at the end of the day.

The organisation of the event is second to none particularly the punctuality of start times and the dealers who are all excellent. The catering staff  do a great job as well; considering the demand as a result of the complimentary meals.

The structure of the competition is just right and most players can make Day 2 reasonaby easily without taking too many risks.  Today will be a different matter as people with below average chips will be looking to double up quickly to avoid their chips dwindling away.

1. Visit the toilet early as they will be full 10 minutes before start.

2. Dont tell anybody that it is your 1st time

3. Dont look at the amounts on the chips - remember how much they are yellow 25 - black 100 red 500 green 1000

4. if your hands shake sit on them.

5. 1st level ; raise in late position occasionally if no previous raisers - with any hand.

6. If you get AA or KK raise 4x pot

7 You more than likely will not win but just enjoy it - when you get eliminated remember there is always another game.

This is a hypothetical question which can not really be answered. however, it is also an interesting thought. Most people who play poker do not play primarily for the money - money is always a consideration and has to be there to add the excitement factor. I think the real reason for playing is more fundamental than that.

Why would Phil Ivey Doyle Brunson Phil Helmuth et al.play in  the WSOP when they are multi millionaires? Its not for the money its for the competition! I often wonder why fishermen fish when they often don't catch anything - its because they enjoy the competition {with the fish I assume).

We play for the buzz - the money is the petrol that drives it - we wouldn't play if there was no money but we would continue to play even if we had more money than we could spend.
