I do miss the old pounds, shillings & pence. Saw this today on Danny Baker's Twitter;

Last echoes of a vanishing way of speech. Talking of a record he should have bought, friend of mine just said,

"Bloke on the stall wanted 4 and 6 for it but I only had 3 and 8 and he wouldn't budge."

Folks under 30 would have no idea what that meant.

Don't flatter yourself. My 40yos don't know what it means.

They can't work out why he needs an extra 10 pence to make 3 and 8 into 4 and 6.

Red, I'm 51 & don't know how to work out old money. I know what it is & recognise the notation, but couldn't do sums with them.

My Mum taught my niece to do old currency calculations during lockdown as the wee one was bored with the online maths her teacher was giving her. So there is a 13-year-old in Ireland can do them Cheesy

I love the one of the leopard seal ppppicking up a penguin.

I didn't realise they were so big. (Leopard seals, not ppppenguins)

I think it's more a case of penguins being much much smaller than we imagine them to be.

Up to about 11.5 ft - so big buggers. Only one recorded case of them killing someone, a snorkeller was dragged about 70m deep.

Wow Red, were you there as a player? I know you said you played.

It's weird seeing people you know in a different life as it were. I'm friends with a guy through football, and I found out after a few weeks that he was a drummer in a punk/pop band in the 80's. Even looking at pics of him in the band I wouldn't have said it was him. His story of Jimmy Saville and a penguin was hilarious, although maybe helped by all having been on the beer for a while. He's a barman in Glasgow now & I wonder how many of the punters don't know his previous life.

No, not as a player, I wasn't nearly good enough but I was friendly with a lot of the players of that era and I was immensely jealous that they were going on such a great adventure without me.

Then one of the players managers had to drop out at the last minute so he rang me and said that if I could get on the flight I could use his hotel room and hospitality.

Wow, what a result. Trip of a lifetime back then too.

I remember a discussion here(?) about dissapearing cuckoos last year, and I couldn't remember hearing one in that year at the time.

I am pleased to report that I heard my first cuckoo of spring this morning.  The bird song is immense in my local county park right now, but the cuckoo rose above it all.  It is a hard bird to love, but I am still glad it was still around.

Pleased to see the swallows back hoovering up the flies too.

Excellent news.

I saw my first swallow of the year yesterday.

Just heard my first cuckoo of the year today while walking the dog, one or 2 swallows about as well.

The lost tooth during an OP is actually not uncommon.  My brother was an anesthetist and said he warned patients that it was a possibility, particularly if the teeth were slightly loose.

So I was told afterwards. It's the effort of intubation I was told. I didn't kick up a big fuss, just made a joke about it to a nurse after I'd noticed,  but I think it was the lack of warning & the not noticing that caused a bit of a flap.

That's what a bloke said when he saw my mongrel dog. He obviously wanted to be positive but could find nothing to be complimentary about. Eventually he ventured, "Nice teef".

Haha in this case I'm just totally jel, always notice teeth because mine are so bad

Mine were ok, but once I got MS and started on the steroids and other meds they started to go downhill. I never thought much of it, until a bunch of people in one of the Tysabri groups started posting the same stuff about theirs chipping.

I had a couple crowns from some chipped teeth in my younger days, so when one of my crowns at the front broke I went out and got them all done in one hit Cheesy

My front ones went West donkey's years ago. I was attempting to pole vault out of a stable and I didn't realise that the pole was higher than the stable door. When the pole hit the top of the door jamb it stopped dead, as did my teeth when they made contact with the pole, all except the bottom half of the front two that is, they snapped neatly off and completed the journey out on to the cobbled yard without me.

I love the way you describe things Red, Did that all start with the phrase "Watch this"?Cheesy

I lost a front tooth during an operation (don't make women driver jokes as they wheel you to an operating theatre, they have you unconscious in there), woke up to a tooth missing, caused a bit of a flap as they hadn't found the tooth or even noticed it breaking. Had to have an x-ray as it was presumed to have gone down my throat, and could have ended up somewhere bad, like my lungs. They didn't find it so it was presumed I'd passed it.

Their worry about the potential for being sued made them very quick to promise to pay for a bridge, probably could have got a crown but not a fan of taking more than I needed from the NHS.

Twitter can be so toxic, & I suppose that reflects the world we live in, with so many isms. Racism, sexism, croneyism & God knows what else. Within it though, if you look hard enough, there are little pockets of wonderful stuff.

The kids must think I've gone doolally, & they may be right, but I spent a whole hour perusing a Twitter thread about an umbrella shop yesterday. And it was the most enjoyable hour I had all day. It started off with an umbrella shop & wandered off naturally into all sorts of odd byways.

My favourite leisure activity is reading books, & books are my most treasured possessions. A good Twitter thread is not far behind though.

WARNING - don't bother reading this Twitter thread unless you are a bit cranky - there's nothing exciting to see.

love this shop, its the place to go if you want a good quality umbrella, walking stick, shooting stick or walking stick. All are tailored in house to your height so it fits perfectly for you.

Here for your walking stick or herd's crook or thumb stick for the fishermen you go to Auld Geordie's hut where he makes them & he fits them to you there. I know the techniques but haven't the skill or patience to justify the expenditure on equipment.

Big Ger was great fun at the old Blonde Bashes, so sad to hear he's gone.

I'll always remember his NFL drinks orders.

Lol. Me and Stu were both saying exactly the same.

RIP Ger

When I finally get back into a pub I'll have one in his name.

I remember Forest playing Celtic & Clough took their bus a detour to the Celtic manager, Davie Hay's, pub, took the whole team in for a pint and left Hay with the bill.  Grin Even the Celtic fans loved that move.

Cool, not sure if pun on my name, or because we've spoken about trees growing around objects before. Either way still a cool picture Cheesy

It isn't quite such an interesting bird but I had this giant pigeon* come visit when I was working a few days ago

*may not actually be a pigeon

I'd faint if I ever got that close to such a beautiful thing.

Like the way you attracted it by sprinkling Quality Street all over the floor.

They have got a beautiful plumage, but they can be right stroppy buggers especially around breeding time. Make a real mess if they start attacking their reflection in the window.
