1  Poker Forums / The Rail / ALL STAR POKER ITV 1 on: July 26, 2005, 12:45:59 AM
Anyone else see this poker show on ITV 1 tonight? Not having Sky, i had high hopes to see some poker on terrestrial tv, but to be honest to the non-poker player i think it would have been pretty boring. The celebs weren't exactly top notch, although snooker players must have a penchant for poker as i believe a couple of them feature in the series, and i know that one of the Bookiebusters players from the WSOP sat beside Stephen Hendry in the main event.

.....And i figured at the start that Helen Chamberlain was going to go through when the opening credits to the show had her wearing a different outfit to the one she played in. Sad

Disappointing to say the least, especially with the commentators claiming that any hand with a picture card in was 'amazing'.

The ITV website has the other 'celebrities' taking part, as follows. McRirick should be entertaining and i think Raj Persaud is a poker player, but otherwise an uninspiring bunch. Unless any of them look at this message board in which case i think you're great! Grin

2  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: Decision time at Walsall on: July 25, 2005, 08:10:21 PM
RED-DOG - don't apologise for any lack of literary eloquence, it reads extremely well and for anyone who hasn't been to Las Vegas, a night in Walsall (sorry Walsall !) probably seemed more real than the glitz of Sin City. Nevertheless it's all the same once the cards are dealt, Walsall or Las Vegas, and you described the whole scene and the emotions superbly. (God, i sound like an English teacher).

Regarding the hand, i agree that the key is patience, not whether you play loose or tight. You could wait a long time for the right time to play a weak hand, as much as a strong one. Some hands are obviously bad and some hands are obviously 'must plays'. Then there are the ones in the middle for which the decision of whether or not to play them will probably depend upon the scenario at the time....number of players, how much you know about them, size of pot etc.

I've mostly been playing online to date with very little experience of live action, and when you play online the 'patience' part is pretty easy as you can do any number of things until a loud beep brings you back to the screen. I generally do emails, my expenses for work, write presentations, whatever, in order to avoid getting sucked into the kind of hands that quickly drag your stack down like quicksand. When i start playing live games, the key for me will be how to keep myself occupied at the table whilst waiting for the right hand (i assume bringing laptops to do work is frowned upon!). I see lots of people use ipods or the like, but i guess you miss a lot of the atmosphere of the live game going down that route.

In terms of your hand, the general consensus seems to be that most would have passed, but hey, if you'd won it would have been a different story and you might be on a totally new road of loose play.

What will really send the money even further up through the roof is when companies from outside the poker industry realise the exposure that some of the best poker players get and the massive audience it can achieve, in the USA now and probably in the UK in the future. It'll become what snooker was in the 80's!!

Cheers Tikay - badly probably but i live in hope. Will let you know how it goes. It was good to see someone in the casino with enthusiasm for it so i hope it gets up and running. Only 6 people registered for it so far (inlcuding me) so i might have a fair chance!!!!

Thanks Londonpokergirl and Riverdave for your comments and invitation! I'll hope to get along to Slough and also to the Rugby club at Reading as well.

Despite it being a very limited interest thread this one, i.e. me!, i'll just let everyone know that i was down at the Rivermead Casino at Reading last night and they are having qualifying games for the Poker Grand Prix to be played at Star City on 7th and 8th September. Tuesday nights are a 10 qualifier for the Thursday night 100 qualifier. Spoke to 'Mike' who seems to be in charge of the poker there and is trying to get it going although response has been slow so far. He also has a Wednesday night cash game running as well.

They seem to be committed to poker as they have taken out a bank of slot machines since i was last there to accommodate the 3 poker tables they now have, so will be interesting to se what develops. I'll be along there on Tuesday to try my hand at the 10 qualifier.

Wasn't the last day starting at midnight UK time? Are there technical problems at the LV end?
15  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: Poker in/near Reading on: July 14, 2005, 09:10:10 PM
Thanks very much, Mel.

Looking at the blonde website, there isn't any mention of Reading in the cardroom listings, which i suppose suggests either it isn't very good or doesn't operate very frequently. I phoned them and they seemed a bit clueless, so if they don't know what they have on, i sure as hell won't!!

I guess Southampton could be a good place to start as that's not too bad from Reading, and then venture into London when i've a bit of confidence. Sounds like you rate the Vic as your preferred London venue - any particular reason for that?

Sorry for all the questions- but it's all new to me so far after mostly playing online!

Cheers,
Mark
