The Innocence Project - Netflix

Another series focusing on the injustices of the American Justice system. At least, in this case, every story has a fairly happy ending. I hadn’t expected to see forensic odontology as a target for improving justice, but once you’ve seen & heard Dr West you’ll know it’s the right call. The sheer volume of requests for help (over 1,000 every year) to the Project is frightening, particularly when you contemplate the amount of work that they must do to overturn a guilty verdict, and the amount of effort made by the prosecutor and the police to stymie their efforts - if only to save face and the cost of being sued.

I love this kind of documentary. The righting of wrongs, the humility shown by the victims and indeed their legal saviours, and finally the joy they share upon freedom always gets me welling up. So, I’m biased, but it’s “A Big Fat 10” from me.

You'll probably enjoy the Kalief Browder story on Netflix if you haven't already seen it

Thanks Adam, I'll take a look

Given that there isn't much else to do, I am going to try and kick the kids out of bed for this.

https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/dawn-chorus-day

We are lucky in that we live very close to a country park, so should be able to get most of the sounds from the garden.  I am not sure how compatible it is with the Sunday Million, but will give it a go one time.

You'll be fine. The dawn chorus is over by the time the sun is up. You're more likely to hear it while playing the night before's session.

They are both up for getting up beford dawn.   Don't know how they will handle the reality; am pretty sure the elder one will follow it up though.  I hate mornings, but am trying to do new things with them.

I am out at 5:30 each morning walking the dog. I use a phone app called Bird Up which records the birdsong and identifies the birds for you (very quickly) It has a 30 day free trial. I am now able to identify quite a few bird calls/songs without the app.

Apologies if you already know about this

Geo

Incredible.

Technology never ceases to amaze me.

I seem to remember that you did some great bird photography a wile back. Do you still do any?

Hi Tom,

wouldn't call it great photography but yes I have started taking my camera with me most mornings. Since moving out of the city and getting the dog I walk each morning and evening with the dog for about 2 hours at the moment. Due to lockdown we stick to local pathways of which there are many really good walks. We prefer the hills however I'd need to drive to the Pentlands and all car parks are closed and access limited and monitored by the Polis.

I'm just back from this mornings jaunt but have a few chores to do so will stick some pics up later. Hope you and yours are well.

I think you are safe to assume that I haven't heard of most apps.  I give up pretty easily when it comes to mobile, but will give it a go.  Cheers

There are a lot of birds singing around are garden most of the day and it is pretty noisy if I run deep in the poker, but the kids miss it, and I can't identify many birds by song.  My youngest is pretty good at identifying birds by sight.

I am quite enjoying a few bits of thw lockdown.  My youngest has become proficient on her bike and have had some proper adventures with my eldest cycling round the countryside.  They are now seeing the World as we used to as kids.  Normally she is hard to drag away from the screens, but right now she is just happy to get outside.  She normally does a lot of exercise, it is just I don't usually have much part in it other than as driver.

It's very simple to use and if you have lots of birds around the garden it is ideal, your lass will soon be able to put songs/calls to the birds

The Last Dance, the story of the great Bulls team on Netflix is excellent.

+1 to this, a wee bit annoying that they are releasing a couple of episodes at a time.

RIP Stirling Moss aged 90.

One of the greatest motor racing drivers of all time and a motorsport icon.

Considered by many (although Gilles Villeneuve fans may disagree) to be the greatest driving to never win the F1 Championship. He was up against Fangio, though!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/52261216

Probably the first motor racing driver that police used when stopping speeding motorists with the phrase "Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?" That phrase has changed through the generations to use James Hunt, Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton etc.

I like Jakemans cough sweets.

I don't carry them with me but I do keep a few in strategic places. Behind the settee/in my man-bag/car door pocket etc.

I'm a sweet cruncher by nature but I've trained myself not to crunch the Jakemans. (spoils the effect and the experience)

The trouble is, now that the temperature is dropping the ones in the car door pocket get really cold overnight and when I pop one into my mouth the sudden warmth causes it to shatter or at least split in two, which leads to involuntarily crunching.

Solutions please.

Do you have any spare/odd gloves (thick ones preferably)

Have a feeling you may be like me and pick up any discarded/dropped gloves you find when wandering.

I have a few and have made quite a few pairs from what I have picked up over the years.

If so, use an odd one you may have to hold the sweets in the door pocket.

Geo

I do collect dropped gloves Geo, and anything else useful. (I have a great collection of ratchet straps)

But I don't think a glove, even a thick one, would keep a sweet from getting cold would it?

Without a heat source, the temperature of the glove would be the same as everything else. (cue our scientific types to confirm)

I have a single fur lined thermal mitt somewhere that I picked up on a wander. Will look it out and test. That's if I can find it mind you as we've  just moved house and still sifting through boxes.

I didn't understand your link either Geo, I thought it would lead to an explanation of the starter dog origin but all I could see was an invitation to create wiki page.

I think we've whooshed each other mate.

Aaaah, I see. don't know whether I copied and pasted the link incorrectly but should lead to a page explaining where the engineering phrase of Dog came from:

in engineering, a dog is a tool or part of a tool that prevents movement or imparts movement by offering physical obstruction or engagement of some kind. It may hold another object in place by blocking it, clamping it, or otherwise obstructing its movement. Or it may couple various parts together so that they move in unison – the primary example of this being a flexible drive to mate two shafts in order to transmit torque. Some devices use dog clutches to lock together two spinning components. In a manual transmission, the dog clutches, or "dogs" lock the selected gear to the shaft it rotates on. Unless the dog is engaged, the gear will simply freewheel on the shaft.

This word usage is a metaphor derived from the idea of a dog (animal) biting and holding on, the "dog" name derived from the basic idea of how a dog jaw locks on, by the movement of the jaw, or by the presence of many teeth. In engineering the "dog" device has some special engineering work when making it – it is not a simple part to make as it is not a simple bar or pipe, and the metal used in its construction is likely to be special rather than regular steel.

There is potential for confusion as "dog tensioners" are levers that are named due to the shape of the lever appearing as a dog leg, as the lever is in a pantograph arrangement, or "dog trailers", which are named due to the use of multiple trailers for transporting animal cages.
