361  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: One that's bothering me from last night on: December 28, 2009, 04:23:19 PM
Nice reply Skol. I did work out the pot odds. I also assigned the villian a range of hands, and had a rough, but reasonable idea about the chances against that range.
I suspected that the villian would be unlikely to shove with a raggy ace, in the event that he was bluffing, so i came to the conclusion, rightly or wrongly, that the hero would either be a small favourite, or, much more likely, a big underdog.
What program do you use to work out the percentages for the hand ranges? if you dont mind me asking.
I'm pretty much at the bottom of the poker ladder at the moment, but i'm trying to learn from posts such as these.
One of the reasons that i found this hand analysis question interesting was because it's a situation that i've been finding myself in quite often and been a bit unclear on. ie-when you have a decision on whether to call, but, if you get it wrong you're out of the tournament.
How do you factor tournament survival into your calculations, or, do the pot odds still decide regardless of where you are in the comp?

Ta for the reply. So should i be able to view all images now, or is this dependent on other factors? cheers

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but not sure where to put it. When i logged on, earlier this morning, i saw a picture of a greyhound. This is the only time i've seen a picture. Is there a setting change that i need to make in order to view images, or, to you only get to see the pics after you have made a certain number of posts?

Good question. With no background info on my opponent, I would fold this one. I know it seems weak, but, from what you said about this and the previous hand, i don't think he will be bluffing, and, even if he is, you are not a massive favourite.

I would call there-and hope that your opponents don't hit a 1 outer when you make your flush.

Thanks for the replies. Outragous-i assume you were refering to the GUKPT example. I asked a few friends for their opinions on that particular situation, as i was interested to hear their thinking behind their decisions. One person went for the pre-flop raise option, and put forward a pretty good argument for doing so. The others chose the limp option. I think your reply (outragous) hit the nail on the head. Cheers.

I've just realised why none of you have replied to my post. No one knows how to play JJ UTG!
eg-First hand of GUKPT at Blackpool. Blinds 25/50. You have  UTG. You have four well known pros at your table.
 What do you do? Smiley

online MTT
$5000 freeroll 3000 starting stacks
280 runners-200 remaining
blinds 50/100 15 min clock
I have about 2600 chips, average is about 4400.
It is a ten handed table.
I have not played many hands. my oponent has about 4200. i have no reads on him.
i am UTG with   . I raise to 350.
It folds to the button, who calls. THe blinds fold.
the flop comes    .
i bet 500. The button calls. turn-
I check. THe button bets 1200.
What should i do now? how should i have played this hand?
Any advice would be appreciated. cheers.

I know it was a pretty boring hand, but, i did think someone might take pity on me and offer me some advice. Ah well, not to worry, i suppose i'll have to try and work things out for myself.
I wasn't really too concerned about how to play precisely this hand. I was just looking for advice to help me to deal with these frequent situations where you raise pre-flop with a pair such as JJ, get called, then the board comes down with an overcard and/or other cards that may have hit and you are out of position against a competent  opponent.

Anyway, looking at my hand again. blinds 50/100. i raise to 350 with  and get one caller (the button). The flop comes  . I'm happy with the way i've played the hand so far lol.

Now the tricky bit. My options. 1. Bet.  2.check-with the intention of calling any 'reasonable' bet.  3. check-with the intention of raising any 'reasonable' bet.  4.check-with the intention of folding to any bet.  5.check-hoping that my opponent will check, then bet any turn that has most likely not improved my opponents hand.

Looking at my options again. 1-bet. Is this a complete no no? if not, do i have to follow through with another bet on the turn, as checking (which i did) seems to be giving up the hand to my opponent. At the same time, betting seems to commit me to the pot, so it would have to be all-in?
2. checking-with the intention of calling any reasonable bet. This sounds quite good to me. If he bets, and a relatively safe card comes on the turn i will probably be ahead, i'm not really sure though and we may well both feel comitted to the pot at this point.
3. check-with the intention of raising any reasonable bet. This definitely sounds promising. He will probably be betting with ATC. I will, more often than not be ahead.
4. Check-wih the intention of folding to any bet. Dont like this . He will prob bet, especially if he does not have a good draw, such as OESD.
5. check-hoping that my opponent will check. not keen. As above, he will prob bet, unless he has a big draw. Then again that might give him all the more inclination to bet it it. Either way, checking and hoping for a cheap showdon is just too weak.

Summary. I'm thinking, in hindsight, that the flop of ktt is pretty good for my pair of jacks. My opponent would more than likely have  raised pre-flop with hands like AA, KK, QQ and probably AK too.
I think that betting the flop, with the intention of going all-in on the turn is ok, but, my final answer is CHECK-RAISE ALL-IN!

Can ANYONE tell me if i finally got it right?

Great interview. He come's across to me as a genuine, likeable bloke. He seems to have a self confidence that people at the top of their profession usually have.

I would fold here. You still have plenty of chips. I think the button prob has you dominated. I dont think he will risk his tournament here with less thanAK.
 LOL-I know i know nowt, but it's only a game isn't it?
