Question for our resident experts

My understanding is;
USA is a little behind us in the vaccine drive now
USA is opening up a lot faster than we are
USA has plenty of Delta variant cases

So, why are they not seeing a similar increase in cases to us?

I would agree they are a little behind on vaccinations.  I think the opening up is very variable, because they have states, counties and cities all with different rules.  I guess they aren't much different overall, but might be quicker.

The USA has much lower rates of Delta variant, it is in most of our cases now, but might only be 6% over there.  Note they aren't as good at sequencing as us, so that figure might be higher, but it is still unlikely to be dominany yet like it is here. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/08/fauci-says-us-must-vaccinate-more-people-before-delta-becomes-dominant-covid-variant-in-america.html.  I couldn't find official figures for now, but they were only 2.5% on 22 May  https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#variant-proportions

I don't know if you can really compare cases, as we test a lot more than they do, including focusing on areas where the Delta variant is highest.  This could mean that they are going to be slower to pick up on increases than we are, but I think the reason their cases haven't taken off yet is down to the lower proportions of new variant. Up until very recently we have had a lot of cold weather, so maybe we were meeting more time indoors too.

It looks like they have a bit of a lag against us, so think their cases will flatten off and start increasing in a couple of weeks or so.  They might get a better experience if their vaccination program keeps going well and the weather is going to keep improving.

Thanks Doobs

That all makes sense, I didn't realise the Delta cases were that low over there, so assume as it starts to spread we will see similar.

Their vaccination program seems to have slowed a bit, so fingers crossed it stays under control.

Virgin won't be, as they've cancelled most of their June flights Cheesy

Think the source on that is Paul Charles, who said the same last month.

He's obviously well connected, but think it's a case of say the same thing until he's right.

Yeah I was mildly annoyed when I read it, but then remembered it was in the Sun, and it probably utter rubbish.

Just ordered my Algarve test pack from Randox! A poor substitute but better than nothing!

MOTHER FUCKERS!

Good old Cummings.

Boris didn’t sack him after Barnard Castle when it was clear he should have. Resisted enormous political pressure then sees Cummings go for the jugular.

No loyalty in politics.

It was interesting to watch an interview with William Hague recently when he said that the Government has actually returned to running a lot more smoothly since Cummings left.

Basically said Cummings doesn’t have a clue on how Government works day to day.

Surely this can't be a bad thing!

I hate the way our opposition parties spend all their time pointing out that the government is doing wrong instead of telling us what they would do right.

I thought I was going to like Keir Starmer but I alas I have no idea what he wants to do, only what he thinks Boris has done wrong.

Completely agree, it is surely so simple to understand that people want to hear their ideas or alternatives but they all seem to be obsessed with pointing out each others wrong doings.

Like all of the Dominic Cummings stuff today, does anyone outside of the witch hunt actually care? He was responsible for half the stuff he is now distancing himself from and he is out for revenge.

Nothing is going to stick to Boris this year as he rightly or wrongly received the credit for the vaccine roll out.

This is annoying me a bit.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-57232728

We are going to see my mum next week for the first time in ages, and luckily as we aren't in these areas and neither is my mum.  I am all for being a bit cautious with these new variants, but none of these areas has had a massive surge in Covid cases and cases are still pretty low everywhere in the UK.  Surely just let people meet up for a while and wait for something more significant before issuing travel bans within the UK?

If people have done the right thing and taken the vaccine when eligible, and only booked UK holidays this year, then they should be rewarded for that?  To then lose another holiday/some more money because of today's situation within the UK then they should be pretty grumpy.

Seems like a reaction to earlier criticism?

Battered for not locking down incoming flights from India fast enough, so now over react to this and enforce some bizarre local restrictions without telling the local MPs?

Everything is returning very quickly, will be interesting to see, really hope it works out for them.

Masks are now optional in casinos and many are removing the plexiglass dividers.

1st June the full covid mandate is removed, no need to social distance, reduce capacity etc

All this talk of concern about the Indian variant surging isn't really showing in the daily case numbers?
