Are we able to work out which is the better indicator of how austerity has devastated the poorest in society?
Bit worried where this question will lead, but I honestly don't know the answer..... Can you explain how austerity has devastated the poorest in society? All of my posts yesterday/this morning in this thread are about it. Don’t worry about where the questions will lead. It will lead to the Office for National Stats, the BBC website, maybe the FT/The Times/Guardian and worst case The New Statesman. I have read the posts, but are you just saying they are devastated because they have more debt, without knowing why they have more debt? A big part of austerity is the government not spending money on essential public services. The problems that the funding previously helped to deal with don’t go anywhere though. So what happens? The articles I linked and the studies they cite seem to suggest the very poorest have been borrowing money to survive. The ONS said the poorest 10% of UK households spent 250% of what they earnt in financial year ending in 2017. I'm still not there. I'm worried I am too far removed. Can we have an example family? What public service do they no longer have access to? Where do they get it now?

Community Forums / The Lounge / Re: If primary source of income, are gambling winnings taxable in UK?

What If You're A Professional Gambler? When we say ‘professional gambler’, we mean someone who essentially uses gambling as their main source of income. But even if this is the case and you are a professional gambler, the answer is still no—your winnings are not taxable. Image of a gambler throwing cardsThis is backed up by the HMRC’s Business Income Manual at BIM22015. Their position is that betting and gambling don’t constitute trading: “The fact that a taxpayer has a system by which they place their bets, or that they are sufficiently successful to earn a living by gambling does not make their activities a trade”. Gambling winnings, therefore, remain tax-free, regardless of whether it’s your main source of income or a simple hobby. An example of this goes back as far as 1925, in which a man named Alexander Graham was taxed by Inland Revenue. Graham made a living out of betting on horses, so Inland Revenue claimed £300 from him under the 1918 Income Tax Act. This case went to court, where Graham’s lawyers argued that betting on horses couldn’t be considered a trade. The judge eventually ruled that you can’t tax “habit”. That’s not to say that professional gamblers can’t ever be subject to tax. It can get a little bit complicated. For example, if a professional gambler is being paid an appearance fee for playing at a particular tournament, then this would be a type of income that would be liable for tax. Here is the manual they refer to.... https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/business-income-manual/bim22017

Hey Tighty I'm a little concerned you're just parroting what's in the press.
Just be careful mate because if cuckoo turns up after a couple of cans of stella you might get it in the neck.
i have been linking articles since may 14th 2015. 930 pages later, it hasn't done too badly for a mostly sensible conversation i can stop easily enough if its only for benefit. Probably be better for my mental health Please don't stop Tighty! So many great articles I wouldn't see otherwise. P.s. I don't have any tinned peaches

I think the point you are missing is that even if you self exclude as a form of self control, it is an alarm bell for the casino, multiple self exclusions and you are telling them the only way you can control yourself is to self exclude.
If that is true you shouldn't be in a casino.
I would suggest that if you get an answer to your question from Grosvenor it will be that they are doing their job correctly and the others are not.
That is certainly how it looks from here.

Speaking as someone who has virtually no political knowledge but has spent a lifetime doing deals, I can guarantee there is zero chance of a no deal brexit. All the 'no deal' preparations and discussions are nothing more than a very transparent negotiating tool.
Never mind "No deal is better than a bad deal". No deal would be the worst deal of all and there is no way we can allow it to happen.
But, the simple truth is, we have no bargaining chips. We will be forced to accept the softest of brexits where we obey EU laws, continue with free trade - free movement, pay our dues but have no seat at the decision making table.
Are you willing to vouch for the government that there will be a deal?
