Hey Tom

Watched this programme on BBC NI last night and I thought it would be something you might like - documentary about road bowls in Ireland.

How did Vinny go from 49k to 68k? What did he have? How did the hand play out?

Who gives a shit - we’re busy people, we don’t have time for that. Leave that kind of stuff to BITB.

I’ve been a Civ addict since the first one - I have about 800 hours on Civ 5.

Not got Civ 6 yet as was waiting for expansions and updates after I got badly burned with the botched release of 5.

First one must be John Moores - the Littlewoods owner who was chairman of Everton.

Just seen it may be due to the running order - Lithuania are 4th wheras Ireland are 3rd from last, just before Cyprus.

Big plunge on Ireland for Eurovision today - 40/1 in places this morning and now around 7/1. Is this the result of people having had a little peek at the semi-final results or just a huge overreaction to the news story about Chinese television blocking out the gays in the Irish act?

Lithuania going the other way - 8/1 when I went to bed last night - was 20/1 this morning. Assume this is inside info from the results as the only other thing that could make them so unpopular in a short space of time would be if the singer turned up to rehearsals in full Nazi uniform.

Pretty sure many, if not all of my Diary readers, will fondly remember this young lady, who was at SPT Notts this weekend.

I remembered Tom to her & she said "Tom who?"

Must have been a real thrill for Michelle to have her photo taken with Phil Laak

There was a tremendous interview with a UKIP spokesman on R4 Today earlier where he favourably compared UKIP to the Black Death.

The Black Death had many positive benefits - helped reduce servitude, opened the way for the Renaissance - you could almost hear Nick Robinson falling off his chair in surprise.

Why is everyone doing that weird stance? Is it supposed to look powerful?

It’s called a power pose - it’s supposed to make you feel stronger and more positive and gained popularity after a TED talk a few years ago

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_posing

It has since been disowned by one of the originators and is generally regarded as bullshit.

The Brexit dept have consulted a grand total of zero external companies about sourcing a tech solution to the Irish border issue

I don’t follow politics all that much but I find this whole Labour anti-Semitism (jew (my phone autocorrected that to new so it’s guilty too)) thing odd. Is it that big a deal or another media thing being constantly brought up? I can’t imagine the tories are any better?

Totally agree. The whole thing seems blown up into a much bigger issue than it warrants. Does Anti-Semitism exist to any real extent in the UK? I'm not aware of ever coming across it or anyone who was really anti-Jew to the extent of discriminating against them. There are other groups who have a much rougher deal in that they definitely do attract discrimination amongst certain groups. Seems to me that some Jews are very vocal and are on the lookout for anything they can call Anti-Semitism, irrespective of whether it really is or not. They currently have an opportunity due to support from media who it suits to get stuck in for political reasons.

I don't think Labour (as such) has a problem with anti-semitism, I think The Left does (with it's obvious representation in Labour).

Many on the left have a problem with 'The Man' and all it's representations such as big business and big banks (etc.).

Many anti-semites associate Jews with 'The Man' (and big businesses and big banks etc).

This is why the emphasis is on Labour and anti-semitism.

Similarly there might be many more garden variety racists who seen the Conservatives talk tough on immigration and benefit clampdowns and in their minds they associate immigrants with taking all the benefits; so they veer towards the Conservatives.

Labour seems to have a particular problem though. When the racist Tories want to stand as councillors or MPs (and the like), the selection people see the racism (most of the time) and rejects them. When Labour selection people see anti-semitism they don't see it as much of a problem.

Part of the problem is the labelling itself - racism against Jews is called anti-semitism but racism against every other minority is just called racism; which fits in perfectly with the idea that 'there's not much of it, so is it really a problem'. If there's racism in Labour, or the Conservatives, or any other organisation - it's a problem. If there was an outcry against racism in the Conservatives I don't think many people would be measuring the amount of racism to decide whether it's an issue or not.

Yes, the Left has always had a large anti-Israel faction (which comes from support for Palestinians and the general 'pro downtrodden oppressed people' thinking). Most of these will, of course, not be anti-Jewish but if you were anti-Jewish, it's a good movement to be a part of to make you feel as though you're on the forces of good.

Labour under Corbyn has also been attractive to groups not traditionally super-involved in mainstream politics - fringe-Left people (who will have fringe views) and Muslims (who are also less likely to have love for Israel). More of these people being involved will result in more incidents of anti-Semitism.

As for why this is getting almost no cut-through the the general population, I think that's because people just don't consider Jewish people in this country to be an oppressed minority. When black, Muslim and Polish people are getting spat at/attacked in the street because of who they are, a few nasty tweets just aren't going to cut it.

Arsène Wenger says timing of Arsenal departure ‘not really my decision’

So it looks like Wenger got, at the very least, the tap on the shoulder, if not the toe up the arse.

Had a system too.

George, one syllable, Charlotte, two syllables.

Think this one will be 3+.

George, Charlotte and Alexander for example. £1 on Alexander at 14-1 with Paddy Power please. They might refer it but I'd be hopeful.

Never mind all that - in other 'a nation eagerly awaits news of a new arrival' news large parts of Twitter are on tenterhooks awaiting the debut proclamation of the latest sage to join.

Didn’t they already try that last time?

Not very effectively. I remember the idea that parties were trying to campaign on issues not personalities.

They should be very aggressive about Corbyn's views and history IMO.

It was surely more that the Tories though Corbyn was going to crash and burn without their help so held off on the negative stuff as they did';t think they'd need it.

It seems that roughly half of all football photos from the 70s are Billy Bremner having a ruck with someone.
