That's pretty good on the Geek Scale, Carl.

I'm awarding it a 7.

Moving on to less trivial matters, presumably you have met Neil Strike a few times? Ugh, what a sad, bad, do all that is. A whole bunch of friends & acquaintances have been taken for goodly sums, almost all of them between £2,500 & £5,000. A whole bunch of my friends Next Door got caught.

We can sit here & be all smug - "you have only yourselves to blame for lending him money" - but that misses the point completely. Most of us are decent human beings, & it's in our nature to want to help our friends who claim to have a few problems. It's not a weakness or something to be ashamed of, far from it.

And I'm not being holier than thou, either, I've made the same mistake many a time & loaned money in good heart only to be shafted. And we can be wise after the event, & say "well he always looked a wrong 'un", but that kite don't fly, I've been done over by what appear to be the most liked & trusted folks you could imagine, including blondes with a great rep. If a friend needs a helping hand, we generally give it. And sometimes we pay in money, & lost friendships. That's just how it is.

This latest one is well bad though - genuinely criminal in the true sense of the word. I guess he'll end up doing time, but that won't help those who loaned him, that money has gone for ever.

I don't really think it's a question of being smug or otherwise. It's not even a question of helping hands and friends. It's more a question about how we identify what people we should call friends.

If we lend money to casual poker acquaintances who claim to be successful businessmen, poker players, punters on golf - then it says far more about our need to be liked and thought of us as being decent rather than actually being decent. If we want to be 'decent' - there are too many more deserving recipients of our decency to mention.

It's human nature to want to be liked - the shrewd thing is to know this and actually be shrewd rather than like being told we are shrewd

So no chance of a loan then Glenn?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'd like to play that Aria comp at least once. For the group, the MGM one sounds about right.  We've all booked to see the Frampton fight at the MGM too, they're all looking hireard to that.

Going on a work trip on Thursday 26th for 4 nights.    It'll be me (50 something , keen on poker), plus 4 male colleagues in their 20's and 30's, keen on eating , drinking , clubbing , partying.  I will be with them some of the time , but will make my excuses to go and  play poker whilst they are clubbing etc.

We're staying at The Cosmopolitan and have c £900 ph left  to allocate / use whilst we're there.  (We've alaredy booked Michael Jackson One Cirque De Soleil for the Friday night).

Any specific recommendations / ideas for them?

They will want to visit one or more good restaurants
At least one "cool" nightclub
Peppermints or similar (at least once, possibly more). I'll have to accompany them there too!
Some day time activities - but probably not early /all day as there will be morning hangovers
They seem to want to try one modestly priced  poker tournament , but not one that lasts too long or gets in the way of their other entertainment. They've all played socially. One plays a little bit online.  (I wouldn't want it to be too poor value or crap shooty though , so we need to find a balance).

We used to have to wait in line to use the public telephone.

Our first telephone number was 351. That was it 3 numbers. You had to answer it by saying " Hello Hodnet 351".

We had a "party line" shared with the next door neighbours. If you picked up the phone when they were on theirs, you could hear their call, and you couldn't make a call at the same time.My dad was constantly annoyed at how often they were on the phone.

Zsa Zsa Gabor

She must have had an amazing will to live, finally checking out at 99 years of age. She collected ex-husbands much the same way as rich middle aged men collect fast cars, not putting many miles on the clock.

She called herself a good housekeeper. Every time she divorced, she kept the house.

Same here. A family member recently suggested meeting somewhere at "about 10."

I quickly said " about 10 doesn't work for me, let's meet at 10."

I knew that he'd be able to arrive about 10 past and still feel ok about it, whilst I'd be obliged to be there from 5 to, in order not feel I was late.

Read a great little article today (and its a clever, subtle advert too). His dislike of exclamation marks reminded me of you.

Oh God, Jim, don't start me off, I was nice  & calm, relaxed & chilled until I read that.

This tickled me though.....

"More broadly, it’s been argued by smarter people than me, that an adult’s sanity is inversely proportional to the number of exclamation marks they use when writing on the Internet"

More seriously, this hits the spot exactly;

That kind of gushy enthusiasm is off-putting at best and patronising at worse.

And that is probably what upsets me most when I see bangs & shrieks galore in corporate comms, because it assumes we, the reader or Customer is a dumbschmuck, or reads magazines aimed at adolescent females such as "Jackie, or "16!".

It is grossly patronising, condescending & insulting to any balanced grown up.

I got these 2 Texts last week;

(Upper case is as received).

"ANTHONY, HERE IS THE TEXT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!"

"LOOK OUT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER CODE TOMORROW!!"

Who the hell wrote that - a salesman's 3 year old daughter?

And guess who sent me it. The producers of Pokeman Go? An ice cream lolly maker? A publisher of comics?  Essex Cultural Society?

No, no, no, & no.

Sytner BMW.

Now a BMW is no longer a prestige car, it's a mass produced middle of the range motor car, albeit they are very nice & well made.

I'd say, however, we can reasonably assume that BMW drivers are aged 18 or over. So they don't need to be patronised with that shite.

I'm not actually sure if this GIF represents those who write that garbage, or me.

Apologies for interrupting your calm, chilled state.  It almost tempted me not to mention that  I'm Alan, not Jim.  Blame Jim if you want.

Sigh, now I'm even more tetchy & angsty, sorry Alan.

Jim was the fella that won the Lottery, right? And you always wore those rather classy checked shirts, Ben Sherman I fancy.

No problem.   Yes, Jim and I share the same surname, but he was the lottery winner and probably better suited to being called Lucky, so the confusion is entirely understandable.

They often say that when the USA sneezes, Europe catches a cold.  We saw that in action yesterday, with our our markets tumbling due to Hilary's pneumonia.

Got a laugh with this today. Our company has a 31/7 year end and today was our internal staff presentation where we summarised results and activities for the last year and presented plans, goals and objectives for the year ahead.

I did the intro and first bit then handed over to a co director for the second bit. He's a massive Leicester City fan so he started with a picture slide of the Leicester team with the trophy and joked that the next 10 minutes were all about Leicester. Unbeknown to him I had slipped this picture in as his 2nd slide. When he clicked onto it, it totally threw him and got a good laugh from everyone else.

Flying out for Kassoufs rail in November. This is happening... Come on Will.

I'd like to do this too. Have already started "negotiations" at home.
