In my latest Bluff Europe waffle, I attempt to name the Elder Stateman of UK & Irish poker now that Liam has moved on. Go on then, try & name your candidate. I crossed a few names off the list for you.

Then I ask you to name the 2 biggest money winners in the history of the GUKPT. Betcha cant do that correctly without googling. Clues - Thewy is 3rd., Kimber 4th, Pab 5th. But 1 & 2?

I have barely played a hand of poker in two years and even I know this is clearly the Dazzling Cornelius of Smethwick!!!!  The elder statesman that is not the biggest money winner......the only man I have ever met that can render ArgueBoy speechless....

Ultimately you can get advice here but almost everyone will be at a different point in their life and have a different experience than you and really only you can know whether you can commute daily, how important security is to you and how important money is.  If your number one priority is money then I would guess, on balance, remaining as a poker player will probably be your best bet for the next 8-10 years.  Beyond that it is close assuming you are successful and able to drink the cool aid.  I would echo what Stu said about buying a house but if you are going to play poker for a living don't make the mistake I did and put too much of your roll into it.  It has caused me untold sleepless nights over the past 18 months but I wouldn't change it because I have a child to look after and my daughter along with the need to pay the mortgage is a huge motivating factor for me and gets me out of bed every single day when five years ago I would have taken a lot of days off and partied a lot more.  Incidentally, I don't think it really matters where you buy in the long run.  The important thing is to just get yourself something.  I would imagine for you anywhere from the outskirts of London up to Nottingham would be fine.  Just make it somewhere you like.  I bought my place in Florida and I have literally no idea whether I will live there long term but I will keep the house irrespective.

I did lots of work on the Breeders and have ended up having one bet tonight.  Hoping a big track bias is going to show up in the early races to give me something to get stuck into or the local horses maybe get overbet which normally happens but feel a bit like I have wasted my time so far.....

2001 QEII Day.  Was working for a firm called Betabet at the time as Trading Director and we tried very hard to give sharp punters a bet and then backed them back.  As such every day we sent someone to every race meeting we could.  I had planned to go to Ascot that day anyway so volunteered to move a bit and had my own punting operation going at the time with a long time partner.  First few races passed relatively without excitement.  Had spoken to my friend and we had decided that Summoner which was a decent horse but probably strictly speaking the pacemaker might just get a totally uncontested lead and had half a chance at 66/1 and planned on having a small bet on it.  I walked around the ring nicking 1000/15 here and there when I saw it when I got a call.  We were moving for a guy called Russell Clarke at the time and the call was to try and get a bit on for him too and at that I decided to have a proper bet.  We took all of the 66/1 and then a fair bit of 50/1 before it went 33/1.  All told we ended up with about a monkey to win about 28k between the three of us.  The horse led as expected and with about a furlong and a half to go I realised they might actually not catch it and by the furlong pole the whole of the ring and stand had gone quiet except for me stood in the middle of Tatts shouting "aiaiaiaiaiaiai" and throwing my paper in the air.  Went to collect and realised I didn't have enough room in my pockets for the money so had to go and buy another racing post (the other one was all over the ring by then) and put some in there and fold it over so was actually quite relieved when the firm rang going into the last and asked me to have a bit on a 12-1 shot.  Had a grand ew for them and 300 quid ew for myself and was semi hoping the horse lost but when it was backed into 9/2 I knew it was very live and of course it won going away.  By this point I had to walk out of the racecourse actually holding some of it in my hands.  Lived in New Cross at the time so decided that it might not be the smartest thig in the world to get the train back to New Cross holding a couple of grand in readies in my hand so ended up getting a cab home from Ascot!!!!  Great day.

Had a week full of Breeders Cup so may as well post the best performance ever on dirt

"Arazi runs right by em!"

First year I was properly interested in racing and still not sure I have seen anything like it since.  Definition of a steering job.

On another note anyone seen any firms going 1/4 odds all races and/or paying 4 in the 16 runner races?  Looks a great card if we can get decent terms.

IPSOS Mori Poll today suggests that Labour could be wiped out in Scotland returning only 4 MP's in 2015 GE.  SNP - 54, LIB DEMS - 1

Thoughts?
Should we get the Betting boots on?

No - it assumes a standard swing across constituencies which won't happen.  They may well be well beaten but I would lay long odds on it won't be this bad.

Lmao at you getting picked as the degen in that field......Wasn't Thomas Bihl Buzzer on BF?  Used to play with him 60-70 times a day at one point and I think Arbboy probably played him more.  Wonder what happened to him.

When bf had their Singapore tournament a few people were chosen for a documentary for free buyin, hotel flights etc. Was mix of people, one worked played recreationally, 1 pro who had amazing work ethic, a female vegan who was as far away from the typical poker player as u could find and I was obv "their degen". Before had cameras go to Romford dogs with me, watch me gamble online and stuff- cribs style tour of house where I lived with parents so as unballa as you can get. When we got to Singapore they filmed me and friends at the racetrack and sorted it so I presented the Singapore Derby winner- think was Derby. We bet the winner as well, and gave it a decent cheer home that the prime minister was in the box next to us and was wondering what was going on. The documentary never made it onto tv thank god as looking back would have been portrayed awfully no don't and cringe thinking about it. Think was in 2006/7??

Wonder how much it would cost to get the tapes out of storage....someone start a staking thread maybe?

Hi guys, I've been lurking this forum for a little while having been introduced to it by a couple posters on this site (Adam Picken and Dan Morgan), haven't posted before mainly because I haven't felt like I've had anything worthy to contribute (at least betting wise)! However I was having a look at premier league relegation odds after reading Redarmis post on the emporium and Leicester at 4/1 to be relegated struck me as nice. Although Leicester have scored 11 goals this season (not a high amount tho more at the moment than most of the other relegation "candidates"), they have only managed 87 attempts at goal this season putting them 4th bottom for this statistic. The teams below them are AVL (last 77) and HUL and SWA (both 85). BRN have had 108 attempts - tho of these attempts LEI have had 13 "big chances" compared to BRN 7 (HUL6 AVL 5 SWA 16 QPR 14 SUN 8 CPL 13 WBA 11 STO 10). Defensively, Leicester have conceded the 3rd most shorts inside the box out of anyone ( HUL 91 QPR 82 LEI 80 BRN 78 SWA 73 TOT 73), and the most shots outside the box (LEI 79 HUL 74 SUN 69 SWA 61 CPL 59 STO 59), putting them second bottom (ahead of HUL) for total shots conceded. They are also joint 3rd worst for "big chances" conceded (NEW 20 TOT 19 LEI 18 QPR 18 EVE 17 MCI 17 LIV 17 SUN 14), level with QPR and a fair way behind the other relegation contenders. I know this doesn't tell the whole story, but compared with the available odds I think there has to be value in this as WBA to be relegated can be found at the highest price of 3/1 (How they are favoured to be relegated over LEI I don't know), and QPR (LEI are only 1 point ahead of them) are 10/11. I can only think that the 5-3 win away against Man United has still clouded the bookies judgement.

I hope you guys find this useful whether you decided to punt on it or not - some thoughts/arguments would of course also be welcome! Also hope this is in the right thread:) GL!

Interesting post.  I started out the season really liking Leicester and I tipped them up a few times including, I think, when they beat MU but the more I look at them now the more I think you are right.  Even that game against MU wasn't all it was cracked up to be and it really felt like United's defence threw it away.   They certainly are going to need to improve if they are going to survive.

That is just brutal.  Looks like the circuit was a lot more fun in those days though.......imagine rocking up for a tournament nowadays and those table from the boat being the poker tables...they look like something from a greasy spoon café!!!

Think doing something else is probably the best way to go but it will be very hard.  If you got a job you are realistically going to be earning less than you could earn at the poker table initially and for that you will have to get up at 7am, commute etc etc.  It will take a lot of discipline etc.  I have dipped in and out of working and it is vital to take roles that you find interesting because having a manager etc feels very restricting after being your own boss for years and setting your own schedule.  All that said it is important to be fulfilled in life and that isn't just about money.  In many ways it is about contributing to society too and gambling for a living on any level you just doesn't do that.

Drogba starting for Chelsea.  I don't hate Schurrle at 11/2 even now but its obviously not as good as I expected.  Pretty tilting.

To compensate for my pretty bad joke above.....

Think there is a potentially very good bet in the Carling Cup tonight.  Chelsea have a lot of injury problems and it seems unlikely that they will risk rushing someone like Costa back for this game.  We already know Remy is out and surely they cant risk potentially having to play Drogba three times in a week at his age.  That pretty much leaves Schurrle and Mourinho has suggested he will have to play and potentially on his own yet we can back him at 6/1 with BMU and 365, 11/2 with Boyles and 5/1 generally.  If my hypothesis is correct then I think he is probably a realistic 3/1 shot so would be looking to have a fairly lumpy bet.  Maybe rec £60 for Fred at 6/1 or £50 at the 5/1 (lets pretend Boyles don't exist because, well, they don't)

Second half redskins +6 is a couple of points too high imo and certainly value.

Genuinely looking forward to waking up to my page of congrats for this one ;-)

We owe it fair and square, pretty poor manoeuvring from team Cameron I reckon. Given that we signed on the dotted line we have to pay up however little the government likes it.

His plan to 'renegotiate our relationship with the EU' (has anyone actually said what this means yet btw?) surely relies heavily on UK generally being able to bargain in good faith if Cameron has any shot at getting what he wants....whatever that is? We play by the rules, we're a net contributor, we're trying to fight the rise of anti-EU parties at home etc.

If he goes into these negotiations as a welcher, what hope does he have?

He has no hope but he wins the next election because he stands up for Britains rights in the eyes of all of those that want to vote for UKIP so he neutralises them.  Of course even Cameron isn't stupid enough not to realise that he also fucks up the country for a generation but given the choice I think most Tories would put the parties electoral prospects above the good of society (which, famously, most of them don't believe in anyway) and some of them are truly bonkers enough to think welching would be a good thing!!
