Hi everybody. didn't occur to me how little I've been posting recently. For those that don't know fruit machine stakes and jackpots are changing which means I'm very busy at work test playing. also we have the industry show straight after christmas so that adds to the work load.

I have been meaning to put a quick post up about backgammon though.

It was my dads birthday in september and I bought him a backgammon board. we used to play it when I was a kid but neither ihm nor me have thrown any dice in 20 years. It propted me to have a go at learning the game. It seems to have coincided with a lot of people doing the same. Notts Gala is full of novice backgammon players, as well as a few sharks.

I have to say I'm hooked. I'd go as far as to say, I feel the same about backgammon as I did about poker 6 years ago. play it every spare minute.

Online I'm using play65. the reason I chose them is that there's a link through poker4charity so they will presumably be getting a cut of my rake. If any one is thinking about playing backgammon online, P4C getting the rake back seems like a good enough reasson to choose a site.

If anyone does give it a try Im AdamM667. look out for me.

Interesting Post as I was learning 10 years ago but got bored with getting beaten by everyman and his dog. My mum bought me a book but just didn't read it!

Seen a couple of episodes of GammonightLive recently and I thought got to give it another go!

Read the book and it actually made a bit of sense. So started playing the wife (at backgammon), finally started to beat her.

Next step download partygammon client (played some free and low limit games - got  )

Next downloaded Snowie and GNU training tools, where you can analyse your play and mistakes. Gradually getting the hang of the doubling cube, when to take it etc..

Allin all I can see how the addiction can take over!

Totally cool gig you got, good to hear all is well and busy.

You mention rake so I assume you play backgammon for real money online. How do you get on?

I love backgammon too, great action game.  I play online at gammon empire, small stakes only for fun really, there are some great bonus available.  I have read a couple of books and watch Gammon Night Live and hopefully will get better.  I find it makes a nice change when I am bored with folding all the time in poker comps.  It is growing very quickly and I imagine there is plenty of money to be made if you are an experienced palyer.

started without really knowing what I was doing so got off to a dodgy start.
I'm playing 50p a game with a £4 limit. reloaded £20 at a time and each £20 lasted me a couple of weeks. my fifth £20 though I've been swinging between £15 and £30 for a fortnight now. so basically I'm at the point where I'm roughly breaking even. my rating plumetted to 1200ish when I started but as I said, no idea what I was doing. I was learning as I went. I'm gradually climbing back up and Im around 1400 now. think I've got a handle on the basics now. I plan to do some reading after christmas to see if I can get an edge over my fellow fish.

Totally cool gig you got, good to hear all is well and busy.

yep, still a great job. after the trade show in January I'll be dipping my toes into the designing of new fruit machines.

happy to answer any questions on mazooma / QPS fruit machines via PM. bribes accepted  Wink

I enjoy the odd game of backgammon, I seem to go through phases of playing it a lot and not so much. I tried the ladbrokes site when it launched and turned won a little bit of cash. I think they have a free roll there every night now - sometimes with an entry to the "daddy" poker tournie as a prize.

I'd highly recommend getting GNU Backgammon - it's free - as it can provide both a (very) tough opponent and some excellent analysis, on many occasions it has shown me that my thinking was entirely wrong in certain situations.

I got myself a copy of backgammon by magriel if you want to borrow it...

I play occasionally (serious money) on Play65 mostly to wind down from a poker session.
(Still weeping about the loss of Yank Fishys on PatyGammon where I turned $25 into $1K+ in <3weeks)

Send me a PM and we can arrange a friendly (either funmoney or $.50c games) session on PLay65 with ingame tutorials if you like.

I play a bit, mostly vs my old man, he thinks he's hot stuff at backgammon, sadly it took me about two weeks of playing gnu backgammon and reading a theory article a day online to be at the point where I knew I was a better player.

He now solidly refuses to play me, citing the fact that I am a "lucky bastard" Sad
