my laptop has started to run very slow the last few weeks,i got a crash and blue screen this week so have to sort it out,it also takes about 15 min to get online in the morning,i have tried  disk clean up, adware and virus scans, start up applications to a min.dosent need a defrag,i have plenty of free space on my hard drive, i keep getting a message virtual memory to low ,i have deleted everything i dont need on laptop so dont know what else to do to help increase the memory, i have read online advice saying i should increase my virtual memory settings,at present the setting is 336-672, advice given is change to 4096,that seems a massive change, just wondering if it is safe to do this and will this help.

Safe, probably help. What has changed that you now need more virtual memory?

Probably best to use a system managed Pagefile.  If you are using XP you can set the Pagefile to a System Managed size which should automatically adjust the Pagefile to ensure your PC always has sufficient Virtual memory.

Goto Control Panel -> System -> Advanced and then hit the Settings button in the Performance frame.  You will get a Performance Options popup.  Select the Advanced tab and at the bottom you will see a Virtual Memory frame at the bottom.  Click on the Change button and select System Managed Size, then click Set.  You will then need to re-boot.  XP should then set your Pagefile according to the amount of RAM you have installed and your memory usage.
