I'm attempting to do my final year economics project on what makes a good music single.  In order to do so i'm going to analyse say the top 500-1000 best selling singles of the 21st century and then formulate some sort of conclusion.  I've been looking around and firing emails off to all sorts of places (BPI, RIAA, the official charts, iTunes) but have been largely unsuccessful so i'm attacking the forums - does anyone know where I can get a list of the top 500+ selling singles of this century, and how many units they've sold?

If by any chance you know of any literature/papers around the subject that would be much appreciated too!

Any help greatly appreciated!!

There are loads of books with top selling records of all time in big bookshops. My dad has a couple I used to thumb through.

I know what the 4th most watched TV show in Uk history is if that helps? Tongue

Are you looking at just the UK, the UK and US, or across the world?

although looking through that list it doesn't look like listing the best sellers is going to tell you anything about what makes a good single. they're pretty much all crap apart from the s club 7 ones

God that list is depressing.

1. Appear on a tv reality show.
2. Remember your target audience is 10yo girls.
3.Huh?Huh?Huh?Huh?Huh???
4. Profit.

A combination of iTunes and Bittorrent have killed the single, may it rest in its overpriced grave.

The 21st century ?
I don't think there have been 500 "good" chart hits in the 21st century, seriously.
