I'm trying to fire up my lappy but I can't get past the start up screen. I can start in "safe" mode, but that just fills the screen with gobbledegook.

Edit: It's just changed to "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" but nothing is happening.

Waited a while then pressed power  key, back to startup screen...

When someone puts a post up asking for computer help, yours is the last name they want to see in the reply box.

Got an XP cd? Startup with the cd and go to the recovery console, then run a chkdsk /r command. See if it boots up correctly if successful.

Did you drop it/turn it off by removing the battery?
