Well allegedly the cigarette companies have been resisting pressure in the US to take the sugar out of the water used to soak the leaves in. Why?

According to researchers the sugar makes the cigarette smoother to smoke and the sugar also increases the addictive affect of the nicotine.

Actually that does remind me, there is an argument that the sugar reacts with the nicotine - creates some other chemical, and that's really bad.

It may have been more detailed than that, but that was the gist.

I did read your post above. I maintain that smokers do not crave cigarettes for the sugar content.

That article just says that the sugar in cigarettes makes them more palatable for the young, who can then get past the harsh initial 'taste', take up smoking and then become addicted.  No where does it suggest that the users are addicted to the sugar.

trace. you've made 2 posts on the subject with links yet there is no evidence in either link that weight gain on quitting is due to the sugar. in fact your 2nd link points out that most uk fags don't even have the sugar added so it's pretty impressive that something that isn't in the cigarette has an effect on people

Absoluelty -  the sugar increases the addictive affect.

Gatso - I never mentioned the UK - I stated from the outset it was about US cigarette manufacturers. It was just as a point of interest, not a starting point for abolition talks within the european union.  Roll Eyes

you sure did. I know that as the first time you mentioned it you linked to the bupa.co.uk website

seriously trace, weightgain from giving up smoking is from replacing the habit with snacking, losing the increased metabolic rate that you get from smoking and losing the effect nicotine has as an appetite suppressant, not from craving the sugar that you used to smoke

I genuinely believe that sugars in cigarettes affect levels of addiction to smoking. I'm not asking you to believe it, I'm more than happy for you to believe whatever you want to believe too.  Smiley

there's so much crap in cigarettes I don't even know really what i'm poisoning my body with. Whatever I'm addicted too, I think it's more than nicotine. I usually smoke silk cut silver, which have minimal nicotine, but like other ready-rolled fags lots of other nasty stuff.  I've had to resort to roll ups a few times lately, but despite being 'stronger' than the ready rolled ones, I don't get the same level of satisfaction out of them and still crave my silk cut.
