what barry says is true, and on a wider basis, this is simply allowing customers to price discriminate against themselves --> just like the large cup of coffee in starbucks costing about 3p more than the small cup -- all that money is pure margin (more or less..)

Just occured to me in almost 28yrs on this planet I have never stepped foot in a Starbucks. Don't think I ever will either. I have also never been in a Natwest bank.

If i was a Hotelier I would 100% charge for wifi. it's a no brainer. I usually end up paying for it, doesn't mean I am happy about it but I accept it.

A lot of hotels use third parties to provide the WiFi in order to dodge the set up costs, which can run in to a few thousand pounds if done properly.
In my experience I'd rather pay knowing I'm going to get a service which doesn't drop out every 5 minutes.

Yep this is pretty much the reason I have a dongle at £15 a month from Vodafone.  I only actually use it when I am travelling most of the time but it tilts me too much to pay a tenner in a hotel when i can get access 24/7 for a month for £15.  I use it as backup for my home internet.

Me too

My dongle also lets me pay £2 per day if I have run out of credit for that month, perfect for when/how I use it!

The reason they charge so much is cos of all the people freeloading on their wifi by using Backtrack with linux to crack the encryption. Thankfully lots is being done to stamp out such illegal and immoral practices and everyone will pay for what they use.

I can't see this being a problem really, there's only 4 people in the world who use Linux.

Also if they just gave it away then the freeloaders wouldn't be a problem.

I see your point, yes. I just think it's disgusting that people should use these tools in this way while the rest of us have to pay for the facility. Even if I was to download the tools from the web and was able to bust their encryption anonymously in 5 minutes, I think my moral scruples would stop me from doing so. It's only a tenner after all.

Some hotels/groups have a loyalty scheme, some of which which you can join before your first visit. These tend to include free wifi.
